I always loved the smell of freshly turned earth by plow, disk, cultivator etc. I really like watching all types of corn planters new and old as they are planting. My favorite tractor in this video is the Case 2670. Thanks for showing.

It's something else how big things have gotten. When I was little, I would ride with my Dad on our David Brown 1200 pulling a 2 row IH planter. I forget the model, it had one large fertilizer tank on the front for granular starter fertilizer. Before I was around, he pulled it with a JD A. The DB 1200 was overkill, but the A had moved on and the IH H we had was a little small for the mountainous hills we farmed. When I was a little older, we upgraded to a used JD 1200 4 row. Still wide spacing. Dairy farmers in WI didn't embrace narrow row spacing until the 1990's, most guys were still using cultivators instead of sprays because it was mostly for silage and if a few weeds got in it didn't matter too much. We would mix up a bag of seed (two for the JD) at a time with some anti-pest powder and load the hoppers before going out to the field. Fertilizer came from the coop in these 50lb plastic bags, so we loaded the fertilizer hoppers by hand, usually had to refill once or twice to do a field. Fertilizer I mean, back then if you had a field bigger than 15 acres for dairy you were " a big farmer". 2 bags of seed would do the typical 10 acre plot of corn silage easily with the wide spacing. It's just amazing to me a job that used to be for the chore tractor of like 50HP or less is now done by 500+ HP tractors with planters so big you need more machines just to load the seed into them. It's like the forage at the end of the video, in WI the tall silos still stand all over the place. Mostly empty, replaced with bunkers. Is it because bunkers are better? No, it's because you can't fill, or unload, a traditional tall silo fast enough for the size of these farms now. I am not convinced we are better off for it either, we sure have created a lot of problems with these mega farms that we didn't have back then.

We never had that big equipment. The biggest planter was about 6 row. Wow how farming has changed in last 30 years.

When you've got 400hp up to 620hp in my opinion that power has to be on tracks, very little power is lost due to lack of traction and it also distributes the weight of the tractor and reduces compaction ,the only down side as I see it is the maintenance cost, a lot more working parts with a track laying vehicle, as always great video, stay safe Kind regards Kevin Fox,England Essex.

I hope the 9rx has auto guidance or auto path. Modern technology but also needs to use the markers on the planter.
@mikeznel6048
@mikeznel6048 3 года назад
Thats the thing, all that new fancy stuff doesn't always work. Physical markers are part of the machine and always work. Plus if your in a new field or doing a quick job for someone else, it doesn't work if you do t have the field plotted already and by the time you have all the auto set up, you would be done just doing it manually. Most big, big big farms don't even waste their time and money on guidance. Its a luxury. Its mostly for efficiency so individual rows or sprayer nozzles can be cut kn and off when needed so you don't waste seed or fert by double or triple planting everytime you go over it. The guidance is a luxury and not needed, the automation part is to ensure ground gets seeded and sprayed once and not done over and over when passing through the same area while turning or doing end rows or going around water spots. Another reason auto guidance is useless, you still need to manually drive aroumd obstacles.

What are these bare dirt guys going to do when they have to pay a carbon credit per acre that exceeds the cost of what they pay for seed? I hope to God they are taking a bit of acreage every year and learning the process. It takes a solid decade to really work land and get it just right without tillage.
