Hi Kevin , we just got out of the yard last week . The yard said they put in a new Cutlass and didn't have to pull the shaft . They said , I didn't see it . But I believe them . We also got new through hulls and seacocks . Almost no blisters this time . For the last 20 years I have done all the work at a DIY yard (Long Beach , Ca.) , that yard doesn't really allow DIY any more . That's OK with me I'm too old for those fun and games any more . Love your videos .

Hi Mark, Thanks for watching! I left an exposed 1/2" of the new cutless bearing. I'm hopeful that if my cutless ever needs replacement again it will be removable by simply removing the set screws, clamping on to the exposed end and twisting/pulling it out. Perhaps that is what the yard was able to do with yours.

Just got hauled out, Yay. I've got a Beta 20 with 2.5 ratio. Bud recommended a 16R11 3b or 16R12 2b. My current is a 3 blade with 14R11 stamped on it. I could barely get 5 kt at 2000 rpm. Any thoughts? Also what's that tool to pull that shaft coupling? Tony Russo WS28 S/V Elise Marie

Bud, always knows best. I'm running a 15" 3 blade MaxProp which has manually adjustable pitch. I don't recall what we have it pitched at currently. The tool to pull the coupler is an automotive pulley puller, you should be able to buy or borrow one from an autoparts store of maybe Harbor Freight. I've had this one for decades. The BETA engines run at higher RPM's than the old Volvo and Yanmar engines. I don't think we get 5kt until around 26/2800rpm in most conditions with our 25 BETA.

How often does one replace the cutless bearing and how can you tell it needs to be done?

Hopefully only once every 3 or 4 thousand running hours IF things are well aligned. If the shaft can be wiggled around within the cutless it is likely worn.
