Try this at your own risk right..dont hurt yourself you know eh?. I was reading that the industry standard for Working Load Limit on ratchet straps is 1/3 of the Assembly Break Strength. Check out this video of a ratchet strap failing • Ratchet Strap Testing . Spring removal on motorcycle rear shock using ratchet straps for a spring compressor.This is a Yamaha R6 sport bike rear damper with what I think is a spring rated at 500lbs / 9.85 kg/mm spring rate. I am really too weak to be pulling on those ratchets lol and I think it would be harder with a 900Lbs spring. Maybe 3 ratchet straps would be better for that or even extensions on the handles of the ratchets. Oh and I am sure it would be a lot easier in a vice.
The rear shock is from a Yamaha R6 but I am sure will work on R1, Honda, CBR, Kawasaki,KTM,dirt bike,ATV shocks.
These ratchet straps are rated at 1200 lbs and are 1" wide. You need to tape up the spring if you do this or cover them with some cloth as the ratchet or the ratchet strap rubbed bits of paint from the spring.
The bolt was a honda civic cylinder head bolt

If the spring is stiff wrap the strap twice it will give twice the leverage for every pull (look up what a "snatch block" is ) Please check out my amazon store to help support the channel www.amazon.com/shop/singlecams/

I've been doing this for years and years...something you should add here (and something you should be doing as well) is that you should NEVER touch anything in the path of that coil with your hands. Use pliers to pick the retainer out if it would fall out with gravity. I have seen what happens when a strap lets loose and catches a person's hand.

This is exactly how I was planning on doing mine, after many searches I finally found your video and it will still help even though I had the same idea, so thanks for that. I just need to find or purchase a decent bolt and washers, and buy some decent straps (much cheaper than buying spring compressors for a bike). Luckily I picked up a cheap used shock, so I'm in no rush to get the job done as I still have the original on my ZX9r, but will be doing this twice to try and make some money back on one of my shocks once they are refurbished. The original needs some extra work hence buying the other, I'll use best of the parts once dismantled and make the best shock for me and sell the other which will still be decent.

It works! I was going to bring my mono shock off a TW 200 to the dealer till I saw this video. Took me 1/2 an hour!

I’ve watched quite a few videos doing this in slightly different ways and this one seems just safe enough to try. Thanks!

This is a simple and cheap way to do this, took me all of 30 minutes including digging up parts and tools.

you can simply save yourself from all the trouble by using the proper tools to compress the spring.

I just used this to change the Ohlins shock spring on my Ducati 1198S. Piece of cake. Not dangerous in the least. Saved me a lot of trouble finding a shop to do it. Took me ten minutes to get the old one off and the new one on.

For an extra $5 you couldve just bought a pair of spring compressors and done it properly.

This video gave me anxiety. You do know that there is such a thing as a spring compressor which would’ve took you may be and I’m pushing it here maybe one minute to compress that spring and then when you were fumbling around with that outer ring just had me stressing out you had a chisel and wire Strippers and all kinds of tools that had nothing to do with this job.
@manyamaman63
@manyamaman63 5 лет назад
Stress AND anxiety?? Maybe you're a little too mentally fragile to be using tools anyway.
