Nice rifle. In Italy the .22 Long Rifle caliber is used a lot, it's a pity that this rifle is not yet in armories, Springfield exports all over the world, as soon as it arrives in Italy I buy it, I'm passionate about the .22 Long Rifle. Thanks for the video and the review.
You talked about acclimation a bunch, but you didn't say why, so for anyone curious: Lead bullets have to be lubricated, this is why all 22 bullets are lubricated and most centerfire bullets, being copper jacketed, are not. Every company uses a different lube, some use wax, some use oil, etc, and every lube boils off/burns differently, so until the lube from the previous ammo is displaced by the new lube, you're going to get inconsistency, until the new lube reaches equilibrium.
@@preachers4135 No worries. It's one of those things that sounds like a wives tale until you understand what's going on internally. I know I'd be rolling my eyes if I didn't understand what was going on.
Gone are the days of the true, USA, hand made, tack driving 22. I'm thinking of the Winchester model 52B. Literally, one hole groups at 50 yards. Several guys at my range have them. Sold for less than 100.00 in the 1940's. Now, a good sample is in the thousands. This Springfield is a complete turkey. Reminds me of the Remington 504 of about 20 years ago. A beautiful classical American 22 sporter that shot 2 inch groups at 50 yards.
I remember when these things came out. Everyone was laughing at the "1 inch at 50 yards guarantee". I promise they lost at least 30% of potential sales off of that little tag rather than saying nothing.
Spend a little less to get a Savage that’s equal in performance, or spend a little more to get a Tikka/Bergara/CZ that will outperform it. The only “plus” is Rem700 pattern trigger compatibility, but that comes with the “minus” of using mags that aren’t optimal for keeping bullet noses and driving bands pristine during feeding.
@@brandonwhite6171 Exactly. The community is so picky. Why can’t this just be a good “cheap” alternative to the others. Not everyone wants to spend $5-700 on a .22 LR. My distributor is running a really good sale on this right now. I may just pick it up to try.
I have the one in sage and absolutely love it. Fired many different weights and brands with the exception of match. Augilla super extra and CCI mini mag 40gr rn gave me consistent 5/8 groups at 50. In my experience 40gr high velocity work best with 16:1 twist like this rifle and the Henry’s. Just my experience but nothing wrong with this rifle in terms of function and accuracy. Even tried the Ruger 10 round mags with no issue.
Yeah, those are the two best cheap loads in mine as well. Mini Mag HPs not so much and I wish Federal Automatch was a bit better in the Springfield but the Aguila is cheap enough. I've seen quite a few 3/8" groups @ 50 yards but .5 to 5/8s is closer to my average. I've not shot any match ammo through mine at all.
Seeing a lot of squirrels on a tree. One time, I was approaching an oak tree. From a distance it looked like the trunk of the tree was moving. As I got closer, I realized it was completely covered with a swarm of gray squirrels. Never seen that many squirrels at once.
For the first time I have finally seen a sub $1,000 .22LR that outshoots my odd old Marlin 880SQ at 100 yards. 😄 Outstanding! Great video dude. As always. 😎🤜🤛
Big Fan Here. Get yourself a Neil Jones headspace gauge… sort ammo by size then test, You are going to find that rifle likes a particular headspace group. That’s why you are having flyers.
This is in line with every review I have seen so far-you’re wringing as much as you can out of that rifle, and it can’t help itself but toss flyers with match ammo. Hovers close to the MOA mark but just can’t do it consistently for 5-rd groups.
My 2020 loves the yellow SK. That is after testing 8 different brands at 72 degrees. I also found the group will open up at temps in the 30 degree range. I love this rifle with the SK ammo.
I have a Springfield .22lr ( Mosin style ) with a 15 rnd tube mag. and a 4x pistol scope on a 1913 rail. Took out a wood chuck at 120 yards cold bore head shot. Used CCI Mini Mags for the shot. This was 20 years ago. The gun holds a 1/2 at 50 yards.
3 rounds in a 1" at 50yd. Lithgow 101 (brand new) did 50 in an 5/8" at 55. I think Ill pay the $1000 for my Lithgow over the 800 for the 2020 here in Australia.
I’ve found that Federal Auto Match in the 325 round box shoots very well. I’ve used in a CZ457, Ruger precision and a home made ar15. Especially for $0.065 per shot.
ive found that bolt action 22lr made in the 1930-1950s cant be beat! my mid 1930s marlin mod 80 surprised me and beat all my expectations. it shoots like a precision target rifle! the rem mod 37 is another goodie but will cost you alot more than the marlin will. with the availability of golden era guns is still pretty plentiful if you get out and look. brand new guns dont interest me a whole lot.
I think the best thing about this rimfire is the action.. I don’t own one but from what I have researched it seems to have fantastic reliability and very good smooth operations. I would sling the barrel in the trash if I couldn’t get it to group half decent
What I learned is acclimating the barrel to the ammunition. I began 22lr during the ammo crisis with a Ruger American Standard (with a $29 Amazon scope). I immediately began testing ammunition at 100 yds by the simple method of loading 4 mags with 10 rds of 4 different ammos. I did not know until just now that I was doing it wrong. But, my testing did give the most consistent groups with slower ammos such as CCI Standard Velocity.
What even IS acclimating the rifle? Did he clean the barrel or chamber between tests? I know that the barrel needs to be acclimated to the LUBE that is on the bullets by each manufacturer. The lube has to be spread all the way down the barrel after the barrel has been cleaned. When done correctly you get the maximum accuracy for that rifle.
When I bought my 22" Ruger American Rimfire 22, I called Ruger complaining that I couldn't get better than 3/4" at 25 yards. The lady told me that 3/4" at 25 is within their tolerance for accuracy. I said, well it's not within mine. I went ahead and re-crowned the barrel myself and now it is just as accurate as my Savage MKii
There have been a ton of negative reviews on this lately. Springfield is literally giving them away whenever you buy any 2020 Waypoint right now. However, the mag test was impressive. I can't even get my Ruger to cycle the Ruger 25-rd mags.
For all you saying "try Lapua/SK ammo". Well after 500 rounds of Eley, SK and Lapua I came up with the best of the three lots of CenterX I had and it only averaged .8 inch 5 shot groups at 50 yards. Of 10 groups three managed .5/.6 inches, three went 1/1.2 and the rest .75/.85 inches. Very mediocre in my estimation.
They put a lot of engineering into this rifle. Regardless of what you think of Springfield Armory as a company, their firearms are solid for the money. Yes, using 10/22 magazines immediately opens the door with anyone who owns a 10/22. Do you know many people with those? The conical breech is interesting, to say the least. Better feeding, maybe, better ignition of ammo, maybe? I really was impressed by the trigger/ magazine housing. It makes that part of the stock very rigid. The pinned action to that housing is nice also. Over all its a well-built rifle. I'm sure as their popularity grows, you should see some after-market barrels and accessories come out. A good match grade bull barrel would be a welcomed addition. I think this rifle will have a substantial following in the future. It's a really good platform that holds a promising future, for which I'm excited to see at this price point.
They shouldn’t have used the 2020 name as it indicates the same quality as the 2020 Way Point that is an excellent and accurate rifle, which obviously the .22 version is not.
An inch @ 50 yards is trerrible considering i got a Cooey 39 single with 22'' barrel from the 60ies that will stack them on top of each other at 100 yards but that is with a 6x24x50 hawke scope.with mini mags and calm day no wind
The Caps Lock key is located above the Shift key next to the "A" on the keyboard. The Caps Lock key on your keyboard activates an alternate input mode that allows you to type a second set of characters instead of the original one. This set of keys produces uppercase letters instead of lowercase letters and special characters instead of numbers.
Springfield doesn’t make billions of offerings, but what it does is quality. Maybe biased because of military , but am thrilled to get a good shooting 22 from them. To each their own. If I was the Company making a guarantee to the shooting public, I would problem move that back to 25 yards, and you all know why. Now what I didn’t know is a 22 needing to adapt to a barrel while changing ammo. I will be more patient when trying several brands now. Thanks
1 inch at 50 yard is noticeably easier than 2 inch at 100 yard (the distance that many people brag about). People who think MOA is everything is thinking in a spherical vacuum with zero gravity whatsoever.
The few we have on the racks have better triggers than the CZ 457, and the more modern stocks are very nice. However, it is super hard to justify replacing a CZ rimfire
I believe I have watched every RU-vid video on the 2020 rimfire and this is the first one with any sort of accuracy. Are all the others that bad, did 22plinkster just get a good one or are all the other folks just bad shots? I was all hyped up on this rifle until I got to RU-vid.
I would like to think not but,........ Can all of the lesser known RU-vidrs be wrong. And, I failed to mention they were all shooting at 50yds.@@dphil2703
Good vid. Most of the videos I have watched reviewing this rifle seem to have feeding and extraction problems. I didn't see that with the one you are shooting.
None of the other reviews I've seen were using any kind of good match ammo ,but were complaining about the accuracy. And anyone who shoots for serious accuracy with a 22lr knows try everything especially match ammo.
Ive seen others trying to make a tuterial on this 22lr rifle ,your makine sence on different ammo.your covering a better sales pitch. Ill still watch more but im still not going out to get this gun and bring it home
I have a cheap Walmart Savage bolt action .22 with a plastic stock which shoots under 1" at 50 yards with bulk ammo. It does not have a heavy barrel or an acc-trigger. I have not tried high dollar target ammo yet to see what it can do.
Great Video as usual ,,,,,,,but to keep it real the two videos i watched before yours this rifle performed very poorly ,, failure to eject and at 50yds large groups
One year later and the reputation of the 2020 isn't good. Two members of my club who I know of bought the 2020. One returned his the same day because accuracy was terrible. Last week the other used his in our benchrest match using cheap ammo and he didn't break 200 on either of two IBS targets. Springfield Armory missed the boat on these rifles. .
I've found a few older 22LR rifles that shot very good with cheap bulk 22LR ammo. My first 22LR was a cheap bolt action that performed well with Federal Lightning, the better thing was it was reliable in my semiautomatic 22LR rifle I bought new later. Sadly, I've bought a few later that don't hold half as good groups with anything. Part is the quality of some ammo. I've got some 22LR that was manufactured in 90s that is more accurate than some "target" grade from post 2010.
@@jarink1”In the hands of a skilled shooter” oh man! Does that mean if you don’t win the trophy it’s your fault? Does this model come with a freezer? Some snowflakes are going to be melting.
I saw another review of this rifle. That review had feeding problems, average accuracy, and problems with the ruger magazines. Could have just been a lemon rifle but he did not recommend buying the rifle. If I were to spend a 1000 dollars on a rifle I don't care what kind of wood it had I would expect more out of the gun.
Great video . I like.the fact it accepts ruger magazines . Your opinion though comparing this rifles action to the cz and ruger Target.do.you recommend this over them.? Not sure which one to pick.
As soon as I heard the Remington 700 trigger that made me worried, because I have witnessed 700's firing without having the trigger pulled. Plus I own a Norico EM 332 that shoots under 1moa at 50 yards, and it only cost me $170.
Most of the 700s self firing come from people screwing with the trigger adjustments not knowing what they're doing. My CZ457 in the manual says to be careful adjusting the trigger as it could start failing to fire or fire when closing the bolt.
