Had one. Traded it for a reliable SP2022. It's 2022. 9mm's should run 110% right out of the box. They shouldn't be picky about which magazine is in it...

You have a lot of heart testing in those horrible conditions. It provides valuable information (especially if you retest later in better weather) on how adverse circumstances affect shooting. From an old former army officer, a big thank you for your service. I was in officers training in 1980 and learned my 1911 from then and carried one every so often when I pulled installation reserve security force. I have a full-size Ronin and love it. I got a superb trigger job with the original 23-pound hammer spring. The 3.5-pound trigger is now so nice. I re-installed regular grip bushing screws instead of their thin bushing grip screws so I could install Pachmayr low profile wrap around Diamond Pro grips. I like the two-tone look, but I Cerakoted the slide with a light metallic look that perfectly matches the bead blasted stainless bottom of the frame. The cerakoted slide is better for outdoor use, such as camping or hiking. Overall, it's my favorite, do it all .45. Love your channel. So understated and knowledgable instead of some young kid screaming and cussing. Keep it uo. Just subscribed.

God Bless John Moses Browning! I really enjoyed this review (as always, it was detailed, impartial, lucid and articulate) and (for whatever my opinion is worth) I am certain the Ronin will be an entirely fine, defensive carry weapon. But, Howard, here’s a question . . . and perhaps even a suggestion for a separate “comparison” video. My EDC of late has been a police model, M&P 1.0, with a 4.25 inch barrel, night sights and the improved barrel twist rate. It isn’t an example of the gunsmith’s art by any means, but for me it is completely fulfills every PRACTICAL requirement: light and slim, 17+1 capacity, really good ergonomics, good night sights, utterly realizable and durable, simply designed, plenty accurate, a very uncomplicated operating system, and very easy to carry and maintain. Now, I really am NOT a polymer frame / striker fired fan, by any means . . . however, pragmatic functionality seems to me to be important when one is strapping a sidearm on at ~0600 every morning. Both the Ronin and the M&P - and I know you have a world of experience with both M&P’s and 1911A1’s - are chambered for 9x19mm cartridges, both have 4.25 inch barrels (Springfield’s doubtless is a somewhat better “match grade” one), and both are (and I won’t say this well) reasonably concealable and carry-able (for a “small full-sized” autoloader, which I define as having at least a 4.25 inch barrel). So, for practical EDC - not for pride of ownership, or exacting target work, or the joys of Browning’s 1911 design - which would you prefer and why? And, at least for me, capacity is nearly irrelevant (the Ronin’s 9+1 is more than adequate for my defensive needs).
@hrfunk
@hrfunk Год назад
I think my preference would depend upon how I was intending to use the handgun. I Really liked the M&P pistols for duty sidearms. All of the attributes you noted, as well as a business like finish that wouldn't bring tears to your eyes if the pistol were dropped, dinged, scuffed, etc. made it utterly practical. Of course, those same qualities would apply to the M&P for CCW duty. Personally, however, I rarely carry one of my M&P's for that purpose. I guess after carrying such a utilitrian pistol at work for so many years, I prefer nowadays to carry something a little more stylish. I guess too, being such a devotee to the creations of Mr. Browning, I just enjoy carrying my 1911's and P35's (not to mention the occasional wheelgun). Still, if I'm going out on an inclement day or engaging in dirty/sweaty work, I opt for something like my M&P pistols.
@roykiefer7713
@roykiefer7713 Год назад
@@hrfunk Thank you very much, sir, for this excellent and very logical answer. I wholly agree with every point you made (and I appreciate your addition of the “ware and tear” argument). Moreover, I completely understand your feelings re a firearm that is “something special,” not just entirely function but ordinary. In fact, just yesterday I spent 15+ minutes in my shop, admiring my really superb Smith “special edition” 627 (1989 model, pre-Hillary, five inch barrel, gold dot sight, non-fluted cylinder, full under-lug, gorgeous hard wood stocks, great machining and fitting, etc.). It’s big, heavy and only has a six round capacity, BUT it’s also superbly accurate, reliable, durable . . . and a it is a real “work of art.” I suppose - at least for now - I’ll stick with my M&P for EDC. However, the funny thing is, several times a month I’ll opt for a full-size GP-100 or N Frame. Their capacity isn’t ideal and they are large and heavy, but I really cherish them. THANKS, again.

TEASING…..TEASING…..TEASING….. 1911, SCHMINETEEN ELEVEN. External safety, 9 bullets, in a pistol that weighs more than a Glock 19, 43X/48, Hellcat, P365, G3C, M&P Shield and a host of other pistols. Of all the 1911’s available though, the “Commander” size is my favorite. I do like them in 45ACP though. If I ever do buy another one (I have a Kimber Super Carry Pro HD that I gifted to our youngest son) I THINK I’d opt for an SA Prodigy with the double stack mag. All teasing aside, I can’t wait to see the review. I really like how detailed you get in them. Someone that is in the market for something like this will have no doubts about its good, bad and the uglies, when you are through. I mean, I own a Rival Darkside because of you! Lol

The reason your noticing the heavy trigger is because Springfield puts a 28lb hammer spring in there 1911s for reasons I will never understand. I have been replacing mine with standard 23lb springs for over a decade with zero issues, and it brings the trigger pull down to around 4lbs. Polish that sear and trigger bar and you’ll be around 3lbs.

I have a 3" version, and I like it a lot. During the first 200rds breaking-in, both sides of the wood grip screws came lose. The left side was so loose I could turn the screws out by hand without using tool. At home, as I was removing the spring rod to take out the slide to clean it. The spring pod walks out on me. The spring rod was hanging onto the rod end plate(?) just by a thread. And I mean that literally by a thread. If I had brought more than 200rds of ammo with me on the first day of breaking-in, I think 3 or 4 more rounds later, the spring rod would have flown out. That would be epic. I have never experienced anything like it. It was an isolated incident, I hope. Just my dumb luck that I happened to purchase a firearm put together by a Springfield gunsmith that is not all in focus on the job. After that, for everything I buy, I will check the spring rod over and over and over and over again ~ I got paranoid. Anyway, I shot the other 300rds( in one go) the next day, and it was all good. But my lower palm took a lot of beating from the main spring housing tho. I would like to get a 4" or a 4.25" too, if I see one.

Good morning HR. Another good review. I like how you actually test the accuracy. I see other people hit an IPSC size steel plate at 7 yards and brag about how accurate the gun is. The movie Ronin is good, you can find it free on RU-vid. DeNiro is a jerk, but he has been in some great movies. I'm feeling humorous this morning. Shouldn't a lightweight plastic trigger give you a lighter pull? It looks like the original magazine is more accurate than the Vickers mag on the multiple target drill. The EMP was brought up in the chat. Does it disable electronic devices when shot? Thanks for the video, hopefully you'll have better weather next time.

HR, I too, wanted a LW Commander back in the 80's, but at the time, couldn't find one anywhere. So I built one. The thing had an aluminum frame, a Colt Series 80 slide (with all the Series 80 parts removed), a custom barrel I got at a gun show, and since I was working for Pachmayr at the time, a lot of Pachmayr parts. About five years ago, I found out the Caspian is now making Titanium frames for Colts, so I decided to rebuild the Commander. My LW Commander now is a very unique gun. It had the Caspian Titanium frame, Millet Combat sights, lowered ejection port, polished feed ramp, aluminum long trigger, Cylinder & Slide hammer and sear (3.75 lb trigger pull), Bar-Sto .45 ACP 4 1/4 inch barrel, standard safety (in gray color), Pachmayr stainless slide stop, beavertail grip safety, Pachmayr mainspring housing, stainless magazine release, frame is ported for easier magazine insertion, Pachmayr grips, stainless grip screws, and Metalform stainless magazine with bumper pad. The frame is a light gray color, so it is a two tone, just not quite as obvious as yours. This is probably a one of a kind pistol. I don't think there is another one like it anywhere. Cheers, Zeke

As a owner of a 4" ronin EMP I thought your review was spot on. Mine was new with a 7#+ trigger and I sent it back to Springfield and got back a 5#+ with creep. So I replaced the sear, the hammer, and disconnector, hammer spring and sear spring with Wilson bullit Proof parts and got a 3 3/4# crisp trigger. My only complaint with the fit and finish of the pistol is the extractor butt on the rear of the slide is about .060 to long and they didn't finish it flush like it should be. Like you I really like the two tone finish, and the gun has been a 100% reliable.
@hrfunk
@hrfunk Год назад
Thanks, John! I saw one of the EMP pistols at a gun show a few weeks ago. Now that you mention it, the trigger pull on that one was pretty stout too. I would guess it was a good pound or more heavier than the pistol I reviewed in this video. I wonder if there was/is some reason Springfield Armory is putting heavier triggers in the smaller EMP. Maybe they're using the hammer spring to reduce the velocity of the lighter slide. If they did that, rather than incresing the tension of the recoil spring, it would allow easier hand-cycling of the slide and still help reduce wear & tear on the pistol (not to mention the shooting hand). Just a thought. In any case, I'm glad yours is now more to your liking. I might end up replacing the trigger and sear in my pistol, but I'm going to shoot it for a while first. Thanks for watching!

Christmas 1974 money was tight sold my Combat Commander sorta bronze color or copper. The Ronin is beautiful just right . The plastic trigger well you cant have everything. Bought a Range officer few years back so I got it out as you were going over the Ronin it's in 9mm also and I feel in love all over again since we've been kinda snowed in here outside of Seattle 30 miles outside . They are almost identical except for sights ,finish, trigger on mine looks like aluminum 3holes and a set screw ( havent touched it) sights are Springfield. Winchester used to make a nice target load 800fps jacketed semi wadcutter real nice but the gun loved em. Really enjoyed this video and you going over the 1911 . There is just something special about them and the way they shoot . Enjoy watch you shoot a 1911 . Early Merry Christmas. Also to gun guys on this channel very best. Nice looking handgun. I always get a little confused when a pistol is marked "Operator". I keep waiting for it to answer my phone and take messages, but they never do. I'm with you 100% on preferring the GI recoil spring and guide rod system. as well as the single-sided safety. I can remember when the "thumbs forward" method of shooting a pistol first came on the scene from the world of competition. Prior to that, everyone used the "thumb over thumb" method you were taught in the Marines. While there is no question that the thumbs forward method allows for slightly better recoil control and faster times, the old thumb over thumb method has its own advantages, not the least of which is that it is universal from semi-auto to revolver. It also has advantages in weapon retention. Finally, many pistol designs pre-date the later technique, and one's own thumbs can get in the way during firing while using it. Better in my view to keep them locked down with the fighting pistol. Not to mention the issue you encountered operating your grip safety. I think it is good that you got out to the range under adverse conditions. This gives a good idea of what to expect under realistic conditions. I really like that you are using the targets with anatomical markings. With those, there is no way to kid yourself about how good or poor your hits are. I was however disappointed that we did not get a visit from the Water Bottle Banditos. I suppose it is just as well, they would have probably turned to icy evil and those puny 9mm rounds might have only bounced off. I did note with interest that the Ronin had a steel mainspring housing. I have a Colt that cost me double the price of the Ronin, and I got a plastic one.
@onpsxmember
@onpsxmember Год назад
The thumbs forward grip was used since 1960 by Elden Carl. It just got widely spread later on. What one chooses depends a lot on ergonomics and what brings the wanted results is the right individual choice.
@hrfunk
@hrfunk Год назад
Thanks Brother Tom! You're showing your age with that "operator" joke. Next you'll be telling people your "platform" is something you stand on to elevate yourself above the crowd. I don't know if you caught the video I made a while back where I was comparing stances and grips. However, I am to the point where I think the "thumbs forward" grip works great for competition, but as you noted it has some issues when it comes to gunfighting. The "thumb over thumb" grip was developed for combative use where functional relaibility trumps both speed and accuracy. Recently, I've given this topic a good deal of thought. It occurs to me that most of us spend far more time shooting on a range (in either training or competition) than we ever spend shooting in a gunfight. For that reason, we gravitate toward practices and techniques that make us feel good about ourselves when we are shooting targets of one sort or another that are not shooting back at us. As an instructor I know I am swimming against a stream here, but it occurs to me that we should perhaps, rethink techniques such as the "thumbs forward grip". I think this is particularly true, when we are instructing armed citizens who might end up carrying myriad different handguns. It seems more important to ensure we are teaching techniques that will lessen the potential for "shooter induced malfunctions", than to bolster their/our ego by helping them (potentially) fire faster follow-up shots. I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts on this topic. I like those targets too. I made another recent video discussing targets. I would like to see the concept of this type of target more fully developed. Photographic targets persenting images of persons in different postures/angles as well as the precise location of internal organs would be tremendous. It would be even better if the company producing such targets could get some input from the medical community (IWBA?) as to the reletive effectiveness of shots striking those organs. This all may be wishful thinking, but it would be nice. By the way, don't worry too much about the Desperados. I'm sure they will come sneaking back around! Take care.

@@hrfunk Having owned a school that taught over 28,000 private citizens over 20 years, and knowing they could be using any type of firearm after they left my class, I taught thumb over thumb exclusively. I taught the technique that way to all my police recruits. It works with all types of handguns and closely mirrors what people will do naturally. I was never convinced that rapidity of fire was as big a deal as it became after the advent of affordable shot timers. I think they can be an excellent tool for tracking your progress in learning a new technique, but I am not convinced they belong in beginner's education. Nor do I feel that we should be telling new people that how fast they can fire X number of shots is important. Like learning a martial arts move, they should be shown the skill demonstrated, and should be allowed to practice it as slowly as they like, with speed coming as a natural result of practice. Over the years I was given a lot of crap from other trainers for all of these positions, but I knew that some of the most experienced and renowned trainers who taught defensive pistol use agreed with me. Sadly many of them are retired doing from live classes, as am I. Many other trainers are quite talented, but may not b the best resource for beginners. I'll just say this. in the real world when I have held suspects at gunpoint, and there have been lots of times, both of my thumbs have been securely locked down over each other on the gun. Those times that I have had to use my support hand to sweep a protectee behind me, I still had my strong hand thumb locked down on my pistol. I'm 100% with you on the use of more realistic targets. The B27 we both grew up with is too large, and the "Eight and In" scoring system is far too generous. Many police qualification courses have been moved in to 15 yards, which is also a mistake. When I started in law enforcement, we had to shoot out to 50 yards, which may have been excessive, but I think 25 yards is reasonable. At my age and eyesight I can still qualify on a 25 yard course with a small 9mm such as my Kahr P9, so I see no reason a young, strong police recruit with young eyes shouldn't be able to do the same with a duty pistol. Well that's all for now. I need to tell some teenagers to get off my lawn, lol.

@@PPISAFETY Although I would not consider myself in yours or HR's leagues, I do share some of your experiences. Thumb over thumb is intuitive, whereas thumbs forward feels unnatural. Riding the safety likewise feels unnatural. Plus thumb riding the safety is inviting a malfunction if the thumb contacts the slide. During the last application of deadly force(the 3rd attempt on my life in this neighborhood)I drew a SR-1911 carrying 9 rds of Critical Duty 220gr .45 ACP +p and presented, then aimed at the driver of a blacked out car that highbeamed us.Simultaneously sweeping my lefthand to the rear in order to get my stepson and a neighbor to get behind me as the driver punched it. Strangely enough, I don't remember how the pistol got into my hand. Just recall aiming. At this point, where I was starting to put pressure on the trigger, the vehicle swerved and crashed into a yard. The driver was milliseconds from me ending his life. I walked towards the driver door, still aiming and keeping my finger on the trigger. All the while warning the driver about the dangers of speeding down a residential street. Why I did this, I've not the foggiest notion. The driver backed out and took off the way he came. Shortly after, a joint task force rolled up nearly all the tweaker in Twilight Trails. Due to me calling it The Twilight Zone. People who live in and nearby refer to it as simply "The Zone ". The Block Watch has since disbanded due to me becoming elderly and stoved up. Six years later nobody screws with me nor with my lawn.😉

Thanks, hrfunk. 15-20deg F with a bare firing hand is tough conditions. The longer that bare hand is in the air, especially if it's breezy, the sooner your hand will find your fingers losing dexterity relative to being warm/gloved adequately. I've spent more time than I can count in such temperatures, doing things gloved and ungloved depending on dexterity needs. I'd say those first 3 rested shots reflected normal, but the 4th & 5th look like the cold working on your hand. A sniper like you knows trigger pull control. Mother Nature may have been a bit contrary, despite your skill. Thanks for braving tough conditions for this video. My local Ace Hardware has some gloves that are some poly knit, fairly thin, but coated in a thin rubber on the palm. "Ice Gloves" I think they're called. Maybe $20. I've used those in sub-20deg F shooting, they make it more tolerable. The rubberized palm is sort of like cheating with its grip, but the cold temps make me not mind!

From an accuracy standpoint, I'm sure a better trigger would have helped a lot. The 9mm Commander is a great pairing and runs well for most guns. Overall on a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate it as a 6 due to the lack of texturing on the front strap and under cut trigger guard. All the other features are easy enough to upgrade, i.e. sights, trigger, and MIM parts. I also like the clean dust cover. The Wilson 10 round 9mm mags run well in my 9mm 1911s. For 9mm 1911 magazines, I recommend the Wilson Combat 500-9 Elite Tactical 10 round, about $40. Also discovered the Nighthawk Custom for about 10-12 dollars less that has been equally reliable. Lots of sale prices right now.

Nice review. That Ronin looks like good value at that price point. IF you could find the ammo, I like 38 Super over 9mm Luger in a 1911. A shorter cartridge introduces some potential for problems in a 1911. However, I have an older STI Guardian chambered in 9mm Luger that has always run like a top. I do not have small hands but I prefer the CCO format for 1911s when you have smaller diameter cartridges. An Officers grip still holds 7 or 8 rounds, depending on the magazine. The key is that a shorter grip frame is easier to conceal IWB carry for me.

I too am a life-long 1911 aficionado, junkie, obsessed, ummm well... There is no handgun ever designed that is more "naturally pointing" in a human hand than the 1911. I love 'em!!! My very first handgun purchase at age 21 was a Colt Gold Cup, National Match series 70 in .45ACP some 43+ years ago. Still own it. I carry 1911's often, and I do prefer the "Commander size" 1911 - in my opinion it's about as perfect as an EDC gun can be. That said, I also developed this insatiable desire to procure a 1911 in 9mm. "BLASPHEMY THEY SAY!!!" Crazy Man!!!!! Ha ha ha ha ha get over it... So I too wanted a Ronin or possibly an EMP but as HR has so eloquently said - good luck finding one. What a dumbass i was because the perfect gun was right under my nose; the Colt Defender in 9mm. Purchased a brand new Defender and wow, what a wonderful firearm. Beautiful workmanship, flawless function, almost no recoil, and WOW what great accuracy from a small pistol. I have fired everything from Hornady Critical Duty, Speer Gold Dot, Golden Sabre, Federal, expensive ball, cheap ball - not a single malfunction. I did however upgrade to Wilson Combat mags for EDC. This little 9mm has become one of my favorite carry guns - when the day and time and clothing is correct - this Defender is my "go-to". And hey - HR - don't lose sight of reality; you are no longer an LEO. You will most likely NEVER need to take that 40 yard shot. Or even a 20 yard... Personal self defense engagements are less than 10 feet. You won't even align the sights. Keep this real... Love your Ronin video. Keep the great educational videos coming!!!
