Sprint Sled Planning & Implementation Guidelines

This video provides a quick explanation of how to plan and implement resisted sprint training using a dragging sled or similar tool. I have always treated the sprint sled as a means of controlling acceleration posture and teaching an athlete how to maintain a proper body angle during the early portion of a sprint effort.
The weight of the sled should be heavy enough to allow an athlete to achieve a more pronounced acceleration angle without slowing them down too much. Typically, this is approximately 10-15% of body weight, although it can vary by type of sled or the coefficient of friction of your running surface. Make sure to time sprints and monitor running mechanics to ensure the proper weight is selected.
Heavy sleds are attractive to people, but make sure to limit them to shorter distances. If you're using a push sled, you can always break away from the sled and continue your sprint unresisted.

I;m 73 years old and do a similar running sled workout once a week. I want folks to realize that this method works with older athletes. Great tool for acceleration angle.!...I'm using 45 pounds on the running sled.

I do have a question… How many times per week should we do sleds and when to stop using sleds prior competition?

I'd say do them once or maybe twice in the offsesaon. In season I wouldn't do them more than once a week. They definite help acceleration but I would focus on training top speed. I wouldn't do them within 3-5 days of competition but everyone is different.

Thanks Coach. How many times a week do we work with the sled?

Early in a training program I might use the sled 2x per week and then gradually taper to one day a week. Closer to competitions, I'm not using the sled at all.

Hi, I really enjoyed this video. What sleds should I use? I'm having a hard time to find the right one.

I like the sleds with two runners (as opposed to a flat pan) as the smaller surface area create less difference on various surfaces. You can get a decent sled on Amazon for about $60.
