In this episode of our van conversion series we are installing our cladding on the walls and ceiling.
Throughout our build we have been aware to save weight where possible. We have the largest and highest Mercedes Sprinter van we could find and we have to keep the total weight below 3.500 kilograms. So weight is constantly on our mind while we are designing and building our van.
Making the walls and ceiling a light as possible, will have the potential to save lots of weight. So we’ve chosen the lightest way we know to build our walls and ceiling and still be strong enough.
We have chosen the thinnest cladding we could find. This came in lengths of 270 centimeters, about 13,5 centimeters high and about 8 mm thick. We will be securing these on vertically placed very thin flexible wooden battens, which we attached in regular intervals to the metal struts of the sides of the van.

"Sometimes you just have to live with the mistakes you make." Van build turns into philosophy lesson. 😎

A van conversion isn't complete without contemplating your life choices every few hours.

dont think it will be very warm in winter..need alot more insulation in roof and floor

The roof insulation has a Rd value of 2,3 and the floor has a Rd of 1,3. Comparable with a regular house. Insulation is not about being warm in winter. It's about preserving temperature. We have camped in -5 degrees celcius and with the minimal heating of our diesel heater we got the van nicely warm. After shutting of the heater, the temperature remains in the van for a long time. That's the purpose of insulation. Same the other way around. The van remains relatively cool in hot temperatures. So the insulation keeps the cool in and heat out. So for us in practice this amount of insulation works just fine, even in colder climates.

What engine (31x), year and euro 4/5 (emission) is your sprinter?

It's a 2007 sprinter 309 2148cc 65kw. Should be euro 5 if I'm right
