This video is about a DIY Sprinter Oil Change. Performing a dodge sprinter oil change or mercedes benz sprinter oil change yourself will greatly decrease the sprinter oil change cost.
There are a few different factors between the models of sprinter maintenance, but they are mostly similar in nature. Our Sprinter is a 2007 Dodge Branded sprinter but still has the same sprinter oil capacity, sprinter oil filter, and dodge sprinter oil type as the mercedes counterparts. To help you find the parts you need, we've put together this sprinter oil change kit to help you out.

Nate and Steph are a couple of crazy adventurers who decided that life was too short to spend their time and money accumulating "stuff." So, they set out in an RV in January 2016 to travel North America and replace their stuff with experiences. In March 2017, they sold their RV and bought a Sprinter Van, which they built out into a campervan to continue their travels and adventures in #vanlife style.
Both originally from the small town of Blanchard, Oklahoma, Nate and Steph enjoy learning about new cultures and experiencing different ways of life across the world. They like to meet new people from all walks of life and just sit and have a beer with whoever shows up. It's all about spontaneity in this life!
They travel with their two pups, Pyros and Sparta, who have become great travelers and adventure pups as well.

Steph, you just empowered a lot of women! Oil is a vehicle's lifeblood, so maintaining the proper level and regular changes are two of the most important things one can do for their vehicle. This is a quick, easy, affordable maintenance procedure that anyone can perform. Five tips: 1) Crack or remove the oil fill cap before removing the oil drip pan plug. This allows the oil to drain faster and more completely. 2) Keep constant inward pressure on the oil drip pan plug until you feel that it's completely unthreaded from the pan. Then remove it in one smooth motion up and away from the stream of draining oil. This greatly minimizes drips and messes. 3) Apply a thin film of clean oil to all rings and gaskets after inspection/replacement. This ensures the best possible seal, minimizing leaks and extending the life of rings, gaskets, etc. Simply dip a gloved finger into a fresh bottle of oil and coat the rings, gaskets, etc. 4) Be sure to use the right and best oil for your vehicle. Full synthetics or synthetic blends are best. And, while they're more expensive up-front, they save you money in the long run through less frequent oil changes and better lubrication performance. Also, be sure to choose high-mileage blends for vehicles with over 75,000 miles on the odometer. 5) If possible, check the oil level after the vehicle's engine has reached normal operating temperature. Turn off the engine and wait a couple of minutes to allow oil in the top of the engine to drain down into the drip pan. Remove the dip stick. Wipe it clean and reinsert it. Remove the dip stick again and note the oil level to ensure that the proper amount of oil is in the engine. I hope that someone finds these tips helpful in performing their own oil changes. Lastly, pre

The debate about oil changes and Sprinter Vans is huge on line. On our December 2016 model, the manufacturer says 20,000 miles but lots of folks say less. Our mechanic recommended 10,000. Another says 5K. Irrespective, I assume it should be done at 2 years. Any thoughts?

What a timely and well done video. I might consider tackling this if I can get my brother to help.
@EXPLORISTlife
@EXPLORISTlife 6 лет назад
Basically, no. I don't have any thoughts about that. We change ours every 15ish thousand miles. No more frequent than 10,000. No longer than 20,000. ...But those numbers aren't based on anything other than our own speculation and 'best guess' as there is a severe lack of ACTUAL data out there. We drive more than 20,000 per year, so we would never hit the 2 year mark, but I'd personally get nervous to wait two full years between changes. Changing the oil gives us a good reason to get a closer look at the 'inside' of the engine (look for metal shavings, coolant or fuel in the oil, condensation, abnormalities, etc..). For that reason, we would give it an annual oil change in the event of not putting many miles on it. Short story: We would recommend anywhere from 10k to 20k miles with a maximum time interval of 1 year BUT that's not based on anything other than speculation and a 'best educated guess'

So impressed with your explanation. There is no reason women should not feel comfortable doing this and you have empowered many inexperienced human of all types! I think John's tips are spot on. I just bought a sprinter 4 months used, about to pick it up. Personally I don't trust STP oil filters and I'd get a better brand, possibly from Benz I have no experience in this yet, but I don't trust cheaper brands (apologies to Richard Petty and my childhood where we coveted getting an STP oval sticker to put on anything!). The other thing this video showed me is that this may be the easiest most accessible motor I've ever owned! The drain plug is accessible and easy to reach, and the oil filter is vertical with the opening on the BOTTOM not the top (so it should mostly be already drained out) plus it has walls like a cup to hold any little bit of oil residue as you remove it. Amazing if it is as it appears!

Great video. I changed the filter on my 2016 Sprinter. My experience - Before you remove the large O ring be sure to note its exact location as you will need to place the new one at the (exact) same place which is not where you might think if you are used to changing O rings on car filters.

Good video, but the way the o-ring is shown going on at about the 3:15 mark is wrong and will cause you BIG problems (learned this the hard way.) It needs to go in the groove about 1/4” below the cap, not right up against the cap as shown. This will pinch the o-ring under the cap, and the leak won’t start until you get down the road. And it pumps out ALOT of oil when it does, enough to drain all of the oil in a few miles if you don’t catch it (luckily I did, but it was a huge nasty mess.)

WARNING: DO NOT FOLLOW HER DIRECTIONS! Both of your o-rings are in the wrong place, you need to correct this before you have problems. The small o-ring goes in a groove that you can't see because there's an old compressed o-ring still in it. Where you put it it will do nothing. The big ring goes in a grove below the cap flange, not against the flange like you put it. Being against the flange makes it more likely to pop out and if it does you'll have a HUGE sudden leak that might go unnoticed 'till the engine dies. Please take this video down or edit it to show that you did it wrong so others don't do the same.

This was a great video, for anyone watching sure to use the proper oil. Mobile 1 is one of the best brands, be sure the oil is diesel rated, most aren't, and meets the proper spec. It looks like this is the proper oil, 229.52, most cars are less sensitive however newer Mercedes diesels can have maintenance problems down the road with the wrong oil more so than most other cars.
@EXPLORISTlife
@EXPLORISTlife 6 лет назад
Thanks! Yeah, the proper oil is very important for anything with a DPF. Mobil 1 is good, but like you said, its got to be the right one. Pennzoil has a good formula that is rated to proper spec as well. That's the specific one we put in the oil change kit.

An interesting presentation. When draining sump oil, try to get the drain hole at the lowest point. This helps get the last dregs of the old oil out. With your vehicle get the vehicle lower on the side of the sump plug. With vehicles with the sump plug at the rear of the pan, its lower anyway when the front of the car is lifted up. Cartridge type oil filler caps need to be around 15lb ft when tightened, with VWs its marked on the cap. On VWs it usually NM since their German. Sump plugs a bit tighter so they don't allow any oil leak. You checked the sump plug washer condition which is a plus. Coat the filter o rings with oil to allow them to slip in to place easily. May I ask why you buy small oil bottles rather then gallon tubs? ..... small bottles are 60% the cost of a gallon tub. Easy to get the right oil. Simply use an online website oil selector. Engine oil grade and specification are separate issues.

We change it when we have a good garage to work out of anywhere in the 10k to 20k mile range. That's just us though. It's a pretty highly debated subject with not much data to back up the claims. Some mercedes literature says 10k. Other literature says 20k... so it's not very clear. We figure we'll just split the difference.

@@EXPLORISTlife Usually oil & filter changed every 10k for higher milage Sprinters. My 2010 Sprinter has 200k on the clock. Oil and filter changed at 10K now , previously 15k. Fuel / Air / Pollen changed at 20K. Cant beat CLEAN engine oil - for smoother running too ! Great channel by the way .... Much Love from U.K. 💖
