Sprinter vs. Marathoner

In running, you've all seen the sprinter and the marathoner. One looks like an 80's movie character and the other like he has had too many crash course diets. They are both runners so how come they don't look alike?

+theheadsn Funny how whenever sprints get mentioned blacks inevitably are factored into the equation. And yet so many comments regarding the subject on youtube shows whites completely in denial about race making a difference. So then....which one is it? If you say it doesn't make a difference then you can only conclude blacks work harder at it than whites based on all the black Olympic gold medalists in the 100 - 400 metres since 1936 (not to mention blacks hold the world records at those distances). But then again if you say it does make a difference then you are forced to concede inferiority in something based on the same criteria. And that's akin to treason as far as they're concerned.

And that is why sprinters and jumpers have big butts. Someone was talking to me about "needing muscle" when I remarked that I might like to run another marathon, but I wouldn't even think of training for one until I lose weight, and I pointed out that over 40,000 steps, you don't want extra weight holding you back.
@invisiblesun6595
@invisiblesun6595 9 лет назад
I do believe some cardio is important for a sprinter, particularly if you run the 400m. But a marathon is only going to benefit a marathoner. Maybe a 2-3 mile run for cardio endurance once a week. Just as wind sprints can help a distance runner for that final "kick" to the finish where they can just turn on the jets.

Yes, we've mixed up the metric and imperial system! It was an honest mistake on our part :-) We are a company from Belgium (where the metric system is used) and we create explainer animations for our clients. During the summer of 2012, we had some spare time and came up with an idea to promote ourselves. We were gonna make an animation that would explain something that’s relevant for everyone, hoping that it would go viral and create a lot of buzz (it didn’t at the time). The Olympic Games in London inspired us to create an animation involving a common question regarding sports. And because we're avid runners ourselves, we soon came up with an animation explaining the physical differences between a sprinter and a marathoner. Because of the Olympic Games being held in London, we created the animation with the imperial system in mind. But during production, somehow the 42 km slipped in... We didn’t pay any attention to it at the time, until now :-)

Real world isn't that black and white. I choose both. And I still go further, bodyweight training, weight lifting, loaded carries, climbing, swimming, as well. Why to specialize? I want to be a complete balanced human being. Decent in all kinds of physical prowess like a warrior.
@wvu05
@wvu05 3 года назад
@@Joao-ur7ey If you want to be the best, you have to pick one. The days of someone with a build like Peter Snell or John Walker winning middle and distance races are long gone. And the human body also has limits to what it can take. Like it or not, someone with over 90% slow twitch fibers can lift all the weights in the world, but it won't do a bit of good as far as making that person bigger goes. You can also see this with things like wind sprints in more explosive sports. The people with more slow twitch muscles will lag at the beginning, but lead at the end, which some uninformed coaches will attribute to laziness.

Something else to mention is the fact that arm movement, to an extent, dictates leg movement. A sprinter is going to need stronger arms simple to accommodate for the explosive leg movement needed. Distance runners generally don't need that level of explosiveness for their entire race so their arms don't need to be as strong.

From the age of 7 until the age of about 18, I used to skateboard pretty much all day, everyday, and it was also my main source of transportation throughout most of my years skating in my teens. If I needed to go somewhere - *skateboard*. Didn't matter if it was down the street to the park, or two whole cities length to get to a cool skatepark. My point is; as I look back, I was basically doing nothing but cardio every single day all day (not exaggerating). Come to think of it, at 7 years old, my body, like most 7 year olds, was pretty much the average thin frame. Put THAT on top of 11 years of skateboarding, and the end result is I have a crazy fast metabolism, and my body is pretty slim. Now I'm trying to gain weight and put on size, but as someone who once was a "marathon" skateboarder, basically; getting bigger seems nearly impossible. It sucks, I mean it's _really_ annoying as one can imagine. After seeing this video though, I've come to understand that it's likely that I have the 20/80 fast to slow ratio @1:49. Hoping I can at least reach Bruce Lee or Spiderman proportions over time (lol just keepin it simple) But is it possible that over time, as one exercises for increased muscle size that this roughly 20/80 body ratio that I have going for me could possibly reach a 50/50? again, over time? Basically, if I once had a 50/50 ratio before "marathon skateboarding" and my body adapted to a 20/80, then that assumes that slow twitch can become fast twitch over time, or that more fast twitch will become present as the body adapts itself to the strenuity of ones exercising. But I'm wondering what the process would be to influence more fast twitch fibers to increase size/ definition. Lighter and more reps for more fast twitch? Definitely going to do some research on this.

Sprints are more about mastering a certain technique down to the T, but long distance running is pure mental and physical endurance. Most people can sprint 100m in 15 seconds or so, but even running a 7 minute mile is brutal for a lot of people.

Hi Sam! To answer your question, we've gathered our good friends Olivier and Hannes from www.sterk.gent - a gym in Ghent, Belgium - around the table. Olivier: "Yes it is. By combining good cardio exercises or sports as rowing, running, swimming, cycling, etc with (sub maximal) strength training." Hannes: "It's possible, but very hard to train them in a near-perfect balance. The best example I can give you are decathletes - imho, by far one of the most underappreciated athletes ;). They need to train and reach excellence in various disciplines without going too far or overboard in one of their disciplines. Which requires a very hands-on and thoughtful training method. Makes sense?" Hope we could help! Yours in sport & animation, Well Played, smart animation studio

Yes, it's possible to develop both muscles, but not as a marathon runner. In the Army, we have some of the biggest, meanest guys who are able to run for miles yet have amazing physiques. So it's possible, but not for most people. The mental toughness you need to hit legs hard before running 5 miles is tremendous. I know this because I do it.

You can totally see this in cyclists where sprinters train their fast twitch fibers, and climbers, their slow twitch fibers. You can see this even more so if you look at track cyclists compared to road cyclists.

How? Sprinting and long distance are to very different things. Sure they both have running but like the video states there a slow twitch and fast twitch. Long distance is about endurance and stamina while sprinting is about reaching the highest possible speed. They are both hard as shit to be good at

@Bweyg 10 месяцев назад
He probably does some kind of training behind the scenes, there's not really much way he can be faster than you even he does have better genetics than you if he only trains for a month or so and you train for years except if your genetics aren't great. I don't have too great of genetics but my mile time is at 5:26 and that was with about 6 months of training. Also your diet could be another factor.

You for sure can. Some insane runners have a bit of "bird" like muscle that is as powerful as fast twitch but has the endurance of slow twitch;however, this is insanely difficult to achieve. Most distance runners also have surprising strength it's just that all their muscles develop so differently. I'm a distance runner and I often surprise people because I have very skinny arms but I am pretty strong, I just don't have the muscle definition.

MrMikemcmike Exactly... I've seen some documentary that described why most of the gold medals went to an ethinicity that was like 0.8% of the world population. They live in high elevation, so their blood cell count is higher. Which allows them to perform better on lower altitudes, etc... But generally blacks thrive on sports that require running (that includes Basketball, soccer, football,etc). But are not so common on some other sports (like swimming, water polo, etc). What I find strange is that you don't see that many black cyclists (i'm a cyclist myself).

I've heard a different theory. Black Africans are on average the most physically fit compared to other races if we assume that nutrition and exercise to be equal for all races. West African Blacks lean toward fast twitch, East African Blacks lean toward slow twitch, and Southern African Blacks are in the middle. One (minor) reason Usain Bolt is so good at 100m and 200m sprint is because he's from Jamaica, and most Blacks from North America are of West African descent.

Although lean people with lass mass muscle have more energy during marathons it's not always true that big muscles mean fast twitch muscles. There are two types of muscle hyper trophy. There isone where the muscles increase in strength size and speed.

And the other hypertrophy results in bigger muscles with no increase in or strength or speed but more resistance to your muscles so that you will not fatigue quickly.

you missunderstood the point. if you're training your upper body while running long distance or short distance, whether you'll run long or short distance wouldn't affect your upper body. it only means running for long distances would be harder for you if you have a lot of muscle on your upper body, because the more you weight the more weight you have to carry with you.
