@@louiscyfer6944 I have a DT with spruce outside and cedar inside. DT is a guitar with a very different personality. It is loud and outgoing. It is a kind of guitar that you cannot stop playing until your finger joints start to ache. But the normal Spanish guitar has its own beauty. I have Spruce Kohno and Bernabe, and Cedar Asturias guitars which I equally love. I play them in rotation. Don't keep a guitar in the case for too long without playing it, because it might become blotchy underneath the varnish.

Thank you for your CLEAR and well-punctuated and probably proof-read message. I haven't been able to afford to have my luthier make one yet, but the experiment will go through as soon as I can afford it. The two different woods may not join well or some other unforeseen problem will manifest, but it could be something good. The fact that it isn't popular yet doesn't dampen my enthusiasm for the possibility.

@@ww3032 The consensus is that aging is essentially the loss of fluid from the wood’s cells. Heat and vibration accelerate the process, though it still occurs naturally. Interestingly, keeping a guitar in a sealed environment (its case), would limit this greatly. We now have artificial methods of achieving that as well as the time-honored method of playing (see Torrification, et al).

I cannot decide. Both are amazing guitars, the examples are lovely and the player is a brilliant, sensitive guitarist. The cedar guitar is mellower, more serius, a bit woody and rustic sometimes, the spruce is cleaner, a bit more fresh and playful, but this particular spruce guitar has shorter sustain than the cedar guitar. The actual tone also depends of the player's touch. I must note that I've never heard a cedar top guitar with so bright ringing trebles.

In all but one of these demos I preferred cedar (I preferred spruce in the Villa Lobos example, possibly because that's what I expect to hear when I hear that piece). As others have noted, the spruce here sounded dry, a bit thin, and to my ear notably shorter sustain in the trebles. I know this is something that many argue comes with time (I have experience of a spruce guitar opening up nicely), but it's one of these 'gambles' guitarists take on the promise that a guitar will 'some day' get magically better, and I feel is often abused by people selling them. Whether it's spruce or cedar I'd still strongly promote ensuring you connect with the guitar you're trying for what it is now rather than waiting, hoping it will drastically change.

Well, the logical conclusion is that you'd need one of each! Some songs lend themselves very nicely to a more mellow sounding guitar, others to a brighter sounding guitar. I like spruce for its "honky" midrange. It's got attitude. The cedar in these examples, except for the last one for some reason, seemed to have a muted midrange. It almost felt claustrophobic. After that, the spruce felt like I was coming up for air. On the last piece, though, definitely the cedar. Thanks for the comparison and the beautiful playing!

Well, I've always preferred spruce, so that is just one man's view. Also, although the idea of this comparison via video is useful as education for us all, it really is just one more sonic experience that is "translated" by audio engineering (not a criticism). So, one must play & listen, to form one's preference, in real time, live & in person. Again, very nice thought; & quite beautifully played by Cim Frode. Worth more than one listen.

Your performance here is perfect! Great talent. Thank you for this study! I enjoy comparisons, even tho (as with my selection of sterio systems) each will sound "perfect" when not heard side by side. Perhaps the style of music would be the basis for choice? Romantic, historic, sad, mysterious tend to be for cedar while fast, energetic (flaminco) might be for spruce. AS a personal choice, I really like the looks of wood and the wood grains. Cedar usually always gives that while spruce often not so much. Additionally, some modern spruce tops have a "too whitish look" of laminate which is not appealing to me. The sound however is the determining factor always. Please do more comparisons like this. Perhaps same guitars with different strings? Also, perhaps you might establish some "specific criteria" for the industry whereby all comparisons would use the same strings and the same music selection. So that forever we could have more identical comparisons. Playing different music and different strings always changes the basis for comparison. Thanks, again, Cim for this brilliant study and performance!

Nice playing! Good selection of excerpts for comparison too. They both sound good, and I'd be happy to own either guitar. I think the excerpts that tended toward a naturally brighter sound because of how they were written sounded better on the cedar. Likewise, those excerpts that tended toward a naturally more mellow sound because of how they were written sounded better on the spruce. It's like the brighter spruce guitar made the mellower tunes sound better and the more mellow cedar guitar made the brighter tunes sound better. It's like opposites attract to produce a better result. The interesting case is what happens when you play a bright sounding excerpt on the brighter spruce guitar. Is it too bright? No, I think it still sounds good, and it seems it's possible to take off some of the brightness with technique so the sound isn't too ping-y. But what about a mellow excerpt on the mellow cedar guitar. Is it too muddy? In this case, yes, I think it does lose some definition and clarity. I think one could compensate by playing with a brighter, clearer articulation, but this might be more difficult to accomplish than taking brightness out of the sound of the spruce guitar. For that reason, I would prefer the spruce as an all-around guitar, although I think they both sound great.

I have both a cedar and a spruce guitar. I use mainly the spruce guitar for baroque and music till F. Sor but my cedar for romantic and new music. I prefer though the bells on the spruce guitar - clearer sound. The looks of my cedar guitar is better, I prefer the darker time.

I have a Kohno # 10 with spruce top, built in the 70’s. It is a wonderful sounding guitar. I bought a production La Patrie Collection with Canadian Cedar. I played them both, but, not a lot. I had put them both away for over a year. I didn’t play them at all. I decided to get back to those guitars and I was very pleasantly surprised by La Patrie. I bought it new 4 years ago and now it has opened up. It took 4 years for the Cedar top to open up. It has more volume, clarity, harmonics and richer tone. Now I prefer the tone of that Cedar top. I guess Cedar can take a lot longer to open up. But, when it does, you will very much notice it. It will make you think that you have a totally different guitar. As far as the volume, I think the spruce top sounds like it has more. But, it is just that the brilliance cuts through a lot more. That very same brighter tone in the spruce might not let you hear a deeper, darker, richer tone that the cedar might offer you. I mean that is what I have experienced in the last 4!years of owning both tops.

I need two guitars on stage. One Spruce, one Cedar. Depending on piece .... Cedar for Barrios Spruce for Bach when I'm good enough to play both those composer's. Ha.

I looove the look of cedar but I love how bright the spruce sounds. I love how bright acoustic sounds but it’s more fun to play on a classical in my opinion.

Cedar - no doubt Spruce sounds kind of dry, less depth in the tone.

I love spruce! It's more lively, because it changes with the player :) For me, spruce is also better, because it isn't as direct as cedar 'cause I play very direct too. My guitar is a Hanika CF 58 and I'm just addicted to her^^

I am playing on a 2012 spruce guitar which opens since 2 years. I find, hearing this comparison, that spruce sounds deeper too, I nevertheless like the cedar sound too, even if there are overlaps. But the guitarist is very impressive.

As you mentioned, it all depends on the builder. I have an older spruce and a cedar. I’ve tried various strings and with the cedar, and the inner voices seem to get lost. Of course it’s warmer, but for me I can achieve warmth on the spruce as satisfactory with technique.

One thing for sure - I need both 😂 they are so gorgeous 😍! Cedar is deeper and grounded and spruce sounded more subtle and emotional to me. Wonder if the way you play also affects it? Btw are these 8K+ euro guitars?! 🤨 then I can just relax and keep learning (by watching youtube videos 🤓)

I have always have spruce top guitars, but both tops sound great! The high notes in the spruce have something like a "slap"

When listening to this comparison I scrolled down so as not to be able to see which guitar was being played so as not be be influenced by the appearance of the guitar. During the performance on each instrument I would consider my impressions then scroll up to see which guitar was being demonstrated. I always chose the cedar-topped instrument as my favorite. Both are beautiful, however I prefer the cedar for the "sweetness" of the first three strings(E, B, G) and the depth of the bottom three strings (D, A, E). Also, the timbre seems more even across all strings as compared with the spruce-topped instrument. To my ear the cedar lends a fullness and depth to the timbre that is missing with the spruce. I think that if one wants to "brighten up" a cedar topped instrument, they can do so with different strings/tension. As always, it all comes down to the individual musician's perception and favored voice of the instrument. Adi.

Cedar is more evenly toned to lower end, spruce is more open mid tone and highs. I like both but find one or the other is better with certain music and mood. thanks for sharing you are a great guitarist.

I want to make a dual-wood guitar with cedar on the bottom for bass response and spruce on the top for treble. Cedar is the bass wood and spruce is the treble wood.

Do you mean cedar inside and spruce outside? Jeff Sigurdson does that with his double-top guitars.
@rineric3214
@rineric3214 3 года назад
@@ClassicalPan No, but what a cool idea! I never thought of that. Traditionally, guitar tops are two separate pieces glued together. Two well-matched cuts of spruce OR two well-matched cuts of cedar. I am proposing one cut of cedar that would rest on your leg and one cut of spruce that would be close to your face. Cedar is good for bass. Spruce is good for treble. Best of both worlds. Jeff's idea is way cool, too. Double-top like Elvis? Manuel Ramos?

@@rineric3214 That's an interesting idea. I'd never thought of that. I'm guessing it doesn't work since we haven't seen it. 🤔 Many luthiers do double-top guitars now. I'm personally not a fan of them, toneally, but they're great for touring guitarists because they remain toneally consistent in any climate.

They both sound beautiful, but I like Ceder, it sounds warmer and melodic. I think that Adagio or Romantic would sound better on the Ceder. I feel that the Spruce sounds brighter, more outgoing... Thank you so much for this comparison. I'm going out and looking for a nice Ceder made Classical guitar now ;-)
