In the 1990s Pittsburgh, Montel (Rusty Cundieff) and Clyde (Joe Torry) are friends who could not be less alike. An introverted photographer, Montel wants to meet the one right girl for him and settle down to build a family, while Clyde is a flamboyant womanizer just out for a good time.
At a party, they meet Adina (Paula Jai Parker), a sexy golddigger seeking a wealthy husband with robotic determination, and her shy law clerk friend Brandy (Tisha Campbell). The couples pair off in predictable combinations, but while the brief encounter between Clyde and Adina quickly implodes when she discovers that Clyde's success is an act and his Porsche is borrowed, the relationship between Montel and Brandy blooms into a true romance. Eventually, they decide to move in together, motivating Clyde and Adina to reunite in a selfish scheme to break their best friends up, using whatever treacherous means they can employ.
The excellent cast that must be announced and honored is the late greats John Witherspoon who we lost in 2019 played as the Detective in the hilarious scene at the suspect line up and Clarence Williams III who we lost in 2021 as Grand Daddy, the shotgun totting protector of the home who stole Clyde’s shirt off his back! We have cameos with the late greats of Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sandford of iconic The Jeffersons.
This movie is a hidden gem. So hidden inside of the Black Culture film closet yet it should have mainstream recognition because it is one of the funniest Romcom’s on film to date!! The raucous comedy is throughout the entire movie yet also brings a serious message about best friends losing their BFFs when they start a new relationship. This is what this movie is all about. What do we do when our best friend leaves us for another, for a love? I have always said that our best friend is really our romantic partner without the romance. They are just that close to us, so when some thief comes along parading as the love of their life what can we do? How do we get our friend back? Well Clyde and Adina come together to hatch a scheme to break them up so things can go back to normal. Diabolical and hilarious!
As Montell and Brandy get so close that they decide to move in together their friends kick their plan in overdrive. First talking down their decision, calling them stupid and silly for falling in love so quickly. Questioning if they really know each other.
