A two day fishing and wild camping adventure on the Sound of Sleat between Skye and Ratagan. Loads of good sized spurdog and some skate action between myself and Trev. Campfire steak and a beer to ward off the worst of the midges!

Divers got a good show 👌

They timed it well, although we'd actually seen them the day before as well. They'd a fair collection of rods with them too, although they were primarily diving. They were certainly covering a lot of ground in their RIBs and up for something like 3 weeks.

Thanks 🤗 It was pretty much new territory for us, apart from a shore fishing trip a few years ago. I think we'll be back!

Well done the boys! some feisty doggies there all right, not to mention that sheet of plywood you dragged up. Thanks for posting, we're all jealous.

Well, I was quite pleased with the result as it's pretty new territory for me and we deliberately tried a few different spots too. Trev did most of flatpack hauling, but he's had plenty of practice recently so no need to feel any sympathy!

Some lovely fish on that trip doug, I love finding new places to go when you post videos like this and I really do appreciate it 👍🙂

Glad you liked it. I reckon you could launch a kayak quite easily around Glenelg and we were catching fairly close to shore. It's pretty tidal in places but you don't need to get into a strong tide run to catch fish.

Have just been upto skye for a,week off fishing in my yak. got 2 cracking days out for pollock over 50 fish each trip and on 1 trip pollock to double figures .plenty off 5 to 8lb And one day on the skate but I got pestered with spurs so gave up and fished for spurs till I got bored. Which was about 3 hours haha back up next year cracking place and scenery

Sounds like great fishing for the pollack, although I've never done brilliantly for them on Skye - quantity rather than quality in my case. I know what you mean about the spurs and I wouldn't want to fish for them too often, but they are generally a good size and worth a shot - especially when you're in with a decent shout of skate or the odd tope too.

Fantastic video & some spot on fishing Doug, we fish around Luce bay but would really like to get my boat up to that area
@Corkwing-DougK
@Corkwing-DougK Год назад
Quite a long haul for us so I'm glad it worked out OK for both fishing and camping overnight. I'm not sure if Sleat is more or less exposed than Luce Bay but there are strong tide runs in places and a lack of obvious slipways. We launched at Dornie/Loch Duich and came through Kylerhea. I'd guess you may be able to get a boat in at Glenelg but it would be a long drive to get there and find you can't!

Be a long haul for us from the Lake District Doug, but it looks a stunning area, looking into a trip next year ( boat & shore ) any info would be appreciated

I've fished Skye a few times from the shore but only twice before from a boat, so I'm not expert on the area. I reckon September is probably a good time to try - the tourists thin out a little and the mackerel are still around to keep the tope and spurdog happy. Massively weather dependant of course, especially towards the north of the island, so your plans need to be flexible. Personally I'd probably base myself at Sligachan if I was camping, or perhaps up towards Portree, and just drive as needed to find shelter (it is a big island though!). I'd certainly want to fish the Bracadale and Sleat areas again from a boat, and also Staffin which I've never launched at.

I've read that the skate love munching on Spurdogs, might give us a bit of hope further south 🧐 Great video lads!
@Corkwing-DougK
@Corkwing-DougK Год назад
I reckon they can munch on pretty much anything, although they are supposed to be partial to scallops (a fish with expensive tastes 😀) I know what you mean though - you can easily get to much of a good thing where spurdog are concerned.

cracking spurs, nice skate. Plenty of sport and fantastic scenery Doug. First time I've seen you wear a midge net on your west coast excursions. Was starting to wonder if your impervious to the scottish mosquito . 👍👍
@Corkwing-DougK
@Corkwing-DougK Год назад
🤣🤣 I'm a complete midge magnet! Take me along and everyone else is safe from the things... The net has featured before on one or two videos, but generally most of my west coast videos are either outside peak vampire season or on a boat (or else there's a decent breeze to put them off). I hate them, they love me 🙁🙁

Plenty of fish caught there Doug sleat is now on my to go to list I’ve been taking the sib, down the mull of galloway, a lot this summer, the fishing is great this year
@Corkwing-DougK
@Corkwing-DougK Год назад
It's a good area for a SIB if you keep an eye on the forecast, and can keep the spurdog spines away from the tubes! I've also had a good year too so far, and some nice dry, sunny weather is a definite bonus. Long may it continue!

@@Corkwing-DougK yeah went specifically on Sunday till Wednesday as conditions were perfect. Is sleat on the Isle of Skye Doug ?
@Corkwing-DougK
@Corkwing-DougK Год назад
Hi John - Sleat is the stretch of sea lying between SE Skye and the mainland, so the ferry from Mallaig to Armadale crosses it. We were fishing further up though, around the Kylerhea/Glenelg area. We launched at Dornie/Loch Duich and sailed down into Sleat, but I think you could probably beach launch a SIB somewhere around Glenelg (not tried though).
