A playthrough of Sunsoft's 1987 action game for the NES, Spy Hunter.
The game has no formal ending and just loops once you've reached a certain point, so I played until I got a game over on the third loop.
Spy Hunter is one of the first games I played on the NES. One of my neighborhood friends had it, and whenever we'd go over to his house, we'd always end up plugging in either this or Ms. Pac-Man on the 2600. (This was 1987, so the 2600 was still fair game!) I was into both games, but Spy Hunter was definitely the cooler of the two.
It's a conversion of Bally Midway's popular 1983 arcade game, and it's a pretty good one! The entire game consists of a single track that you race across as the seasons change. You're supposed to "protect" the innocent people (red vehicles) by wiping out the criminals (blue vehicles and helicopters), getting as high a score as possible before you run out of lives. You can shoot at the bad guys with your hood-mounted machine gun, and once you've hooked up with the supply truck, you'll also have missiles, oil slicks, and smoke bombs at your disposal.
If you can figure out a way to get to the ramp, you can also grab a speedboat and rocket down the river that runs parallel to the track, but this is really only a good option if you're feeling especially lucky. Or suicidal.
As a kid, I'd get so excited when I got to the boat part, but more often than not I'd end up dead almost instantly. That was usually pretty crushing because the game was so hard and it always felt like a feat to make it that far, even.
Of course, back then it never occurred to me to race at anything below the top speed, and that's probably the worst way to play the game. At your fastest, you won't able to reliably dodge the cars you're trying to overtake, and you'll end up exploding a lot. It becomes much more manageable when you ease off the gas. Your stock of extra lives may even manage to last for longer than thirty seconds!
The game looks pretty good on the NES, and the 8-bit rendition of the Peter Gunn theme from Blues Brothers gets down and funky with that triangle bass.
It's funny to think back now on how many hours I put into Spy Hunter as a kid considering how little there is to it, but even now I still enjoy playing it. In my mind, it's a classic NES game. What do you guys think?
Also be sure to check out its NES-exclusive sequel, Super Spy Hunter. It's amazing. • Super Spy Hunter (NES)...

I don't. Back in 87 I would've been 1 year old, messing around with Taito's _Front Line_ or _Mouse Trap_ on the 2600, and those were the only two games we had. But this game is a classic and part of the gaming history I've come to know and love as a gamer for over 30 years. A rendition of "Peter Gunn" playing while you attempt to clear the streets of enemy spies on a high-speed thrill chase? What's not to enjoy there?

What was the game like this but instead of driving into a truck for your upgrades a helicopter would drop them onto you and you had to catch them?

My goal as a kid was to get to the boat section. If I did that I felt like it was a good run. Lots of Saturday’s spent playing this back in ‘87.

I had a version of this game on an old PC that has like 3 colors. I think it transitioned from the car to the boat sections on its own. As a kid, I never once thought to slow down, as I was used to playing racing games where you're supposed to go as fast as possible, so I didn't usually do too well.

I love how it wasn't like your typical NES music and like the same song just repeated for like 60-90 seconds, if that... sure that bass line was constant, but it seems they kept changing or adding SOMETHING to that awesome song as long as u didn't die and had that playing, no??? Man, the arcade version of this was so much better, so much cooler, and took up A LOT of our money as kids when it came out... we all loved that friggin music and endless machine gun most of all lol

Spy Hunter is a classic no matter what system it was on. I had it for my Atari 800. I could get pretty far once I learned how to shoot down the helicopter. My problem was my score would always stop because I’d accidentally take out a motorcycle after shooting a switchblade or the limo.

Best Arcade-to-home conversion. I usually let the chopper pass most of the time instead of firing a missile at it. I HATE the water stage though.

The best one is either this one or the Colecovision port, though Coleco doesn’t kill you if you hit an exploding vehicle after destroying it.

I remember having this for my Apple II. We only had the Peter Gunn theme in the opening, and it was music-less the way through the main game. However, we only had two buttons, one for oil/smokescreen, and one for machine gun/missiles. We couldn’t toggle if we got both oil and smoke, but it worked out on water (always smokescreen). We also didn’t have the limitation where we could run out of a backup weapon (though that didn’t stop us losing it if we crashed the car/speedboat).

"It's funny to think back now on how many hours I put into Spy Hunter as a kid considering how little there is to it" I know the feeling... I think as a kid I just convinced myself that it just HAD to have a ending, that a game this cool doesn't just loop forever, and if I drove just a little bit further, played a little bit better, I'd finally see it. I never did see that mythical ending, but man could I loop the hell out of Spy Hunter.

This was a very fun game, despite the limitations of the NES controller. I think I always had trouble switching weapons for some reason. For some reason, what I remember most is that to pause the game, you had to have a second controller plugged in, and you had to press "A" on it. Did any other NES games require a second controller to pause?

I must know, I gotta look up and see if this game has an ending.... Killin me for like 35 years, whenever I hear Peter Gunn or randomly play this game...
