RT Twin Procedure! | Let’s Get Face to Face! | Winter Car Vlog!
I’ve been asked several times about doing an oil & filter change video on a v-twin powered Spyder RT. This is my first attempt at doing a daily vlog mixed with a little how-to at work. I know she’s on the rough and raw side, but let me know what you think...
Hope you enjoy the info, ride and video!

Thanks Shawn from me as well. This helped me step though an oil change on a 2013 RTS SE5, which did have differences of filters and shifting mechanisms BUT I used this vlog and the owners manual to step through the process with great success. I did discover in reassemble that the 2013 has the “quick access” panel you noted so next time it will be faster. I used a BRP oil change kit and it was smooth, but long process of 3hrs 20min from parking the Spyder to riding it post oil change. It was a lot more involved than and of the 2 wheel motorcycles I’ve owned since 1975. Thanks again, bb

This video is perfect. Made my first oil change so easy. I had watched and read about doing this and was a bit nervous, however Shawn describes it perfectly. Also he doe sit on a SM5 manual version which is what I have. I will now be able to do my oil changes easily and save a lot of money.

Another awesome video. Here in NS my dealer charges $75 CND for the kit but another $150 in labor + 15% TAX! You just saved me a ton of money my friend. I'm going to pick myself up a kit and some ramps and do it myself. One of the reasons I've been thinking of switching to a Ryker is they seem so much easier to work on but my 2010RTS is still running great at 99,000kms.

Good voice sound on the video. I am impressed with how clean and meticulous you do your work. It shows you take pride in it. Very interesting to see this process, keep 'em coming.

I really like this format Shawn. Really cool to see that oil change. Lots of work to change fluids on a Can-Am. Wow. You're getting really comfortable with the camera pointed on you and it shows. Really smooth. Easy to watch and interesting. Thanks for taking is along!!

Nice thorough explanation/guide. I too am a Can Am technician and it's nice to see other techs doing good work! I see units come in a lot where either the customer screwed something up or another dealer did. Have to take your time with spyders their are a lot of steps.

Yet another great video. This particular one is great because the format in which you habitually use has gone away. and that is a good thing. Change is good. New camera angles. New content. I like the maintenance videos. I learn new things and not just new verbal content like many of your previous videos. Keep on changing up your channel. It would appear what there is always something new on your channel. I wish someone had bought that Sportster Hugger and then gave it to you. You really seemed to enjoy that bike. Keep the videos coming Shawn. And good job.

Thank you for the detailed video especially the torque settings as I could only find ##nm for the sump bungs and not the housings. Keep up the good work 👍👍👍

I Really like How you are very attentive to what you are doing when you are working on the Bikes, I appreciate The fact you clean the bike as you are working on it. When I had my 1200 iron, I never did any work on it outside of cleaning and the Mechanic at the Shop I went to was a lazy slob and his Work reflected it. I always had to clean the bike because there was always oil smudges on the bike one spot or another. Hope You get where you can do more at work Tech video's. I enjoy watching them. Would Have loved seeing you change the rear shock on that Spyder, along with the tire. Anyhow Awesome Stuff Shawn.

I liked your vids even before watching, the sound was good could hear you perfectly, it's great how you put the torque figure up and you don't use a torque wrench but you've most probably been doing it for so long that you know the feel of it. Great vid as always love watching these as I get to learn more (not as good as you lol)

first off yes it's reminding me to like the video.because most of the time I'm excited to watch and listen to your blog and forget to do it. now I have to agree about the loud music in the shop. I would have already talked to him and asked nicely for him to either turn it down or head phone phone it. I always wore head phones at work.and everyone else did as well.they wouldn't let us play open music radios because it caused arguments.so the guy is going to ruin it for all if he doesn't turn it down. now on to your vlog. love watching you servicing the spyders.having my F3s it means more and is very interesting to see what all is involved. as I've said just had my 3000 Mile service done.and I think my belt and chain were loose because it was so much more smooth and snappy when I took off after the service.seem to run smoother all the way around.its semi-auto and it seem to shift smoother. at about 62 mph it had a bad vibration and it seems to be gone.i forgot to tell them when I took it for service.but i guess it was something they did during service that corrected it. I really enjoy the way your talking to us with camera on you now to.seems great to see you while your chatting to us. was hoping to see you lift the trunk off and replace the shock and maybe tire . so if you get the chance sometime.throw that in a vlog if you don't mind.heck anything you do to one is cool to watch. thanks Shaun

You save me a lot of time by waching your video before trying to change the oil on my 2011 Spyder RT (Standard) Transmission. I was looking at someone's else video and the filter is in the other side on the new modeland mine does not have the second smaller filter and plug. Ran nto a problem that the oil plug under the Oil reservoir appears to be permanenetly locked in place. Overall the oil change is long and tedious but I learned a lot by doing it myself.

Thanks for the video, I now understand the labor rates for an oil change. There is a lot of labor just to get to the oil change area, I wonder if that was an intentional design to help insure you bring it to the dealer for service, LOL.

You make that look so easy. You sure have to remove a lot of panels to get in there. Looks like you'd need a special tool to get those clip things out? Went to fast to get a good look at it I'll have to watch it again and pause it. Who knows some day I may need to know how to do this How dare someone thumbs down one of your videos.

Great video. Gonna do my own oil changes on my 2012 RT Limited. Do you have a video on intermitent transmission shift delays? Sometimes my bike will hesitate for 2 or 3 seconds before shifting. Wierd, but it's paddle shift.

Music? I hear Death Magnetic in the background.. at 17:23 it sounds like Cyanide... yeah.. I'm a Metallica fan... just a little bit :D It's really simple to make a mount that hangs your camera under the rear view mirror from it's stalk/pedestal. I like the angle it gives you and most people (then again my Sony is a lot harder to see being so slim) never even see it. I've pulled up at the store and people haven't noticed it till they look in my side window. All you need is a little piece of sheet metal and a clam shell pipe clamp and maybe a bit of foam strip to act as a damper/ allow the clamp to grab it instead of marring your rear view. The pics of the mount I made are on my facebook page, minus the clam shell clamp, I still need to get that, I was using a wire loom thing but it doesn't clamp the best. Did they make a twin F3 style one? That'd be cool, the sound of the twin in an exposed frame/engine lighter weight chassis with a manual trans... I guess it's just the hot rodder in me and the fact that I'm a twin kind of guy. I'd say it's because I grew up around Triumphs but my dad's 74 Trident is a 3 cylinder and I don't like how it sounds either.

Thanks for showing us this and yes that music if that is what it is is really terrible. It looks like it is easier then on the 14 triple which i guess is similar to the 15 you did in your garage before.

Very surprised BRP doesn't offer bulk oil and filter(s) I would think that would be far more cost effective than using a proper kit every time you do a service.

@ShawnSmoak
@ShawnSmoak 6 лет назад
The engine and HCM filters use 5mm allen head screws. The tank and engine drains are 6mm. Note: The HCM filter bolts are longer than the engine filter bolts! Mixing these up will end in total engine failure and possible vehicle crash!!! Thanks Chris!
