Hey, different strokes for different folks. Personally, I love my Dragonfly. Easy to carry, easy to deploy, and it doesn't get people clutching their pearls the way some of my other knives do.

VG-10 is probably more than anyone needs for normal use. If your day consists of opening a few taped boxes, and some packing straps, and maybe cutting up some lunch items, it’s fine. A big plus is the less than 2.5” blade, making it legal almost everywhere. It’s my go to EDC for work everyday. It doesn’t freak people out like a mini griptilian, or mini bugout (even though they are arguably better knives).

I've used this at work everyday for the last 5 years, doesn't spook the sensitive coworkers. I open a lot of boxes and I use the spine closed to break through the tape at the seam without cutting too deep. It's a handy tool for It's intended uses.

Claro: you use the swedge while it’s closed? Sounds a lot like stuff I do with mine as well. My power move with taped boxes is a ball point pen.

I have 50+ spyderco/benchmades, the dragonfly (I have 4 of them, g10,hap40,zdp,k390) gets more pocket time than the rest combined. It’s the modern equivalent of your great granddads penknife, small, discrete, you forget it’s in your pocket. It’s also the perfect knife fig you wear gym shorts/sweats/etc, no flopping around. The only small knife that gives most people a comfortable 4 finger grip. I given at least a dozen of these as gifts over the years, great size for any size hands, a perfect knife for people that carry knives to actually cut things.

This is the funniest review you have ever posted. I wear an XL glove and one hand opening or carrying the Dragonfly has always been comfortable for me, but I have owned one since 1994 or 95. It is a great small pocket knife.

Two things: 1) it’s not designed to feel like any other knife, it’s a unique design that balances ergonomics with cutting ability. Does pretty well with both. 2) this is one knife where a lanyard is actually appropriate. I carry mine without a clip and a lanyard becomes a must for getting out of pocket. Thanks for the review!

Amazing knife that served me well as a teenager through highschool. Any young boy would love this thing. For me it was my first knife that I didn't buy off a shelf at home depot. My first purchase with money I worked hard to earn. I would've bought something bigger if it wasn't illegal. Overall I have to say carrying this knife through highschool and into young adulthood, and still using it to this day, it is a great little knife. However if I could've gotten something bigger I would've gotten the para military 2. In defense of the dragonfly you can usually get it for 100$ cheaper than the para military. Overall a great knife for the young girl or boy in your life that likes knives. Not that an adult who collects knives wouldn't love it, but I think if you had over alternatives it would just end up in a survival kit or lost in a backpack pouch. If you're in an area like me where you need to conceal everything under tight pants and a dress shirt, then you need an elegant knife, for a more civilized age. Pocket and forget. I use the lanyard hole for a wrist strap to work free handed with the knife close by. And I use a zip tie in the Spyder hole to create a thumb stud for one handed operation. Typical hacks for most Spydies so it is not like this knife requires special modifications. Are there better knives out there? Yes. Are you going to find one the same size with good ergonomics and decent steel for 70$? Maybe second hand. Overall I think the reason this knife has such a cult following is because it is the only knife of It's class at the price range. I would love to see alternatives. At the time I got mine for 60$ and it was the best knife I could afford.

The Dragonfly is my favorite discrete EDC. I find it easy to deploy and it fits my hand very well for such a small knife. The build quality excellent. The HAP40 w/pakkawood version is one of the best offerings in the Spydie lineup, and I own most of them. Fantastic cutter than can be carried everywhere, and won't freak out the easily frightened. Small enough for a keychain, and easy to thumb-flick and close one-handed. These smaller offerings will continue to soar in demand, as government continues to redefine everything as a weapon. Grab the wood-scale version while you still can.

I feel like the dragonfly is a knife you have to live with for a while. When I first got mine, I couldn’t find a comfortable way to hold it, it just felt so small and I couldn’t wrap my mind around it. Then I realized the “pinch point” is really nice between your index and middle finger when you grip it, the blade stock is just beautiful and its carry profile is basically nonexistent...which is all reallllyyyyyy sweet. Do I like it more than my shamans or endela? No, I wouldn’t put it in that league...but for light duty and utility cuts, the dragonfly is actually a really sweet little knife. The Japanese lockbacks are my favorite lockbacks...very comfortable to use...

I can definitely see how people with larger hands aren't going to like this one. It looked comical when my friend with very large hands was checking it out. I have smaller hands and the Dragonfly melts into my grip perfectly and I can flick it open easily. Larger knives often feel way too big for me, to the point that they're sometimes even uncomfortable to use. I did splurge and get the Knifecenter pakkawood version of the Dragonfly, which I like better than the injection-mold plastic.

There's only so much you can do with a knife design to make it stand out and be unique. I get that you don't like the curve, but it does make the little knife look cool and its basically only going to be used once in a while to cut cardboard, open packages or letters mostly. So, I just don't think the shape is a deal breaker. I ordered the camo version :)

The place where the Dragonfly shines for me is with the fully serrated SpyderEdge. Like most of us I'm not a huge fan of serrations and don't like them on my primary knife, but I do realize that they have their utility. Having a SE Dragonfly allows me to add that utility to my carry and have it go virtually unnoticed clipped in my back pocket until needed. That thing'll pop a zip-tie just by looking at it. I've even taken to getting the H1 SE version and swapping into other color frames that I like more (zome green, pakkawood, etc.). Maybe it's just an excuse to carry more knives though ; )

The dragonfly is a good option if you have a 2.5" blade length restriction. I'd bet the lightweight versions are a bit better than my older VG-10/G10 version (which doesn't have the best backlock implementation, and is way too expensive as you mentioned). I'll probably pick up a K390 wharncliffe at some point. I think I prefer the little native handle shape a little bit better (I kinda want to buy a backlock lil native to compare with a dragonfly). They both work in the 5th pocket with the pocket clip, but I've take off my dragonfly wire clip off. Never had any issues with deploying my dragonfly, but it might be a bit thicker with the G10 compared to the lightweight. Ultra thin knives are a pain to grab onto.

I have the dragonfly with Emerson opener. It's quick opening with that. But overall size is too small for clipping on the pocket I think, removing the clip and 5th pocket carrying would be safer. Smaller objects seem to be less secure with a pocket clip to me. if they're too short, they'll come out of my pocket easily it seems.

it’s a great fifth pocket carry and it’s good for left handers. i have the zdp -189 version and the k390 wharncliffe version. it’s incredibly easy to mess up the d shaped pivot hole because it’s plastic…. which is my only gripe about it. I have gifted this knife a lot and it’s a good introductory knife because it’s not imposing and the closing and the lock are both very safe. they sell a wood toy replica of this knife and i got it and the manbug which is a smaller version of this for my nephews eight birthday and next year i’ll get him the dragonfly 2 which is a small knife but not for a nine year old. It has its place in my collection and i have gifted this knife at least ten times by now but really i need to get one with a better handle and then i’ll just blade swap and then I would carry it a lot more.

But really sharp knives and young children, surely not an ideal combination. The leading cause of child mortality in America is guns, there are probably some knife wound statistics that would discourage parents from leaving knives around the house. I do remember my dad giving me a knife and a talk and it felt like quite a momentus day. 8 does seem a bit young though for a knife like this.. a little penknife would surely be a safer option and still allow for learning to cut things. It’s a strange grip for sure and I will never understand why the lanyard hole get priority over the clip so often at Spyderco, but the Dragonfly is still a pretty unique little package when it comes to cutting performance vs size and weight. For the way I use it, the clip position and weird grip doesn’t matter, it’s still a very small package with a four finger grip and that’s the important part, and why it is one of my favorite Spyderco’s. I remember Nutnfancy always loving the Dragonfly waaay back in his early days on RU-vid. Back then I only liked 3.5" and up knives, so I always scoffed at it. Now I think it would be fun to have.

I was gonna say just now the dragonfly, yeah I'll start to edc it but always talk myself out of carrying it. Telling my self its to small for my needs. Knowing it isnt.

I treat the dragonfly like a slip joint. It's just too small to use it like a normal spyderco. Not a big fan of it but it's a spydie so I have to own it

Still my favorite knife but I'm not a fan of vg 10. I found it very brittle like stone/glass. The only reason i don't carry it anymore though is because roommates friend stole it off my coffee table.

Remove the pocket clip and it fits perfectly in a 5th pocket. It doesn’t scare sensitive people. Despite its tiny size, it works like a much larger knife. With its short blade, it’s legal everywhere. Almost. In the UK it would get you thrown in the slammer, but I don’t live there. Downside? It’s not fidgety. At all. But if I want fidgety, I’ll carry a CJRB Pyrite, or even a Camillus LK6. Maybe a Kunwu Pulsar. But the Dragonfly 2 is still in my 5th pocket, completely unnoticeable.

I don’t normally post negative comments, but why not compare it to the Manix XL and the Endura? I mean, JEEZ. Comparing it to the PM 2?? Gimme a break. Where was the Delica? Or some other smaller knife and the ergos? Do better.

Really like mine. Carry it often in 5th pocket. I got the S30V version. It was only $7 more than the VG10 version when I bought it. I have seen the pink S30V version recently for $115. That is terrible. Luck to have got mine years ago when the price was $68. Just $7 more than the VG10 version at that time.

It is tiny. And it is perfect for my 4'11.5" wife. Yes that .5 is important to her. Her favorite is the Bastinelli Silence. The Dragon Fly K390 is on her list. For me I love Tiny, but not in knives.

Most recent knife in my collection, I picked up the Pink Heals s30v version and I completely dig it! But then again I have small hands, and put a s a short lanyard on it for just a little bit more control and I have worked the heck out of it and find it up to most tasks in my everyday life.

The Dragonfly is a great knife for people who want an everyday knife and not a phallic symbol. Protip: For 99.9999999999999999999999999999999% of all knife work, it doesn't matter how quickly you can open it one handed. That only matters in the imaginary knife fights all the "tactical" knife guys spend their days fantasizing about. Also VG-10 is scientifically proven to be as good as much more expensive steels. It's performance is virtually identical to Elmax, for example.
