Great review, although I have to disagree with the bit on the handle. This knife is kinda meant to be small, light and compact. That being said, the finger choil is there to utilize the amount of space you have on such a compact design. In my opinion they kinda nailed it with this. The comment on how you would have liked to see the handle made 1/2 inch longer seems pointless to me, because then you may as well make the blade a half inch longer as well to take up the space in the handle when folded and balance the knife out again. If you were to do that, now you no longer have as compact a knife, and you pretty well have a paramilitary.

I totally agree. If you make the handle a little bit bigger, you are making it the Manix 2 lightweight. Thats like saying if you made the delica a tad bigger, that would be awesome (making it the endura). Still love the channel and was a very good review.

I normally agree with you on everything you review, except on this one. I think this is one of the best EDC knives in terms of steel, value, build quality and level of finishing that Spyderco has ever built. I wish you could use a standard deep pocket clip on it but that’s the only negative I see with it. I love this knife.

I believe the Native's choil is integral, and designed to be held "choked-up" as you say. It doesn't seem plausible that they would make the handle so short otherwise.

Picked up the Native 5 LW Salt with a blue MXG clip and as a do-it-all outdoor EDC it's dang near perfection. While out placing boating buoys for work I accidentally dropped it into Lake Ontario. After a few dives I found it covered in silt about 20 feet down (thank you yellow handle). Words can't describe how nice it is having a cutting tool that I don't need to fuss over. A quick spray with a garden hose and some compressed air was all it took to de-grit the action (along with some nano-oil to smooth things over). The LC200N also took a 17 degree-ish convex really well and makes touch ups a breeze while out hunting. Probably the best impulse purchase I've ever made. If Spyderco came out with a PM3 Salt or Native 5 LW Salt with a compression lock I'd be in heaven!

I just got this for my EDC knife and couldn't be happier with it. It is the perfect size for EDC without being huge in the pocket. I have another knife that is 4.25" and felt it was just too big to comfortably carry every day (I work in an office). The Native fits the bill perfectly. I get what you say about the handle length but a smaller handle is what I was looking for. Anything bigger and I would have been back where I started from. For me this works, and I don't find the ergo uncomfortable. To each their own.

***** Thanks a lot. I really wanted to like this blade, but with the delica4 and manix2 lightweight in my collection, it does not offer me anything that those two offer me then, add the issue I have with the ergos. I will just have to go for the new S110V Manix2 lightweight and a G-10 model with the FFG.

Didn't buy this for the longest time bc of this review. Finally gave it a shot and now its one of my favorites. Notably I've got sm/med size hands. To me the shape, ergos, grip all work well together. Much more comfortable and pocket friendly than the Manix LW.

Watch your channel all the time and value your opinions as I have same general mind set. I just picked up this knife today and have to say it is one of my favorite spydies (in LW handles) right now, but I do wear a medium size glove and fits me perfectly, it will be a great edc to add in my rotation, God Bless and keep up the great work.

I'M STOKED! . . . I was at the FOS in Golden yesterday and bought the Maroon 2015 Forum version after I handled it for a while & since I have medium sized hands it fits very well weather you choke up on it or not.

What, really? A bigger knife would give you more grip? To say that you would like half an inch more handle and then show it next to a Manix is a baffling criticism. Apart from the lock-type, a slightly larger Native IS effectively a Manix. A smaller knife offers less grip but you would buy a smaller knife because you want a smaller knife otherwise you would buy a bigger knife.

Thanks for a very accurate evaluation and assessment. Everything you mentioned was right on point. I personally don't mind choking up on the finger choil. This type of knife is more suited for less aggressive tasks due to the design. I'm glad you compared it to the Manix, that really helped with comparing the ergonomics and why. I still think that the Native is a good knife, not a great one but a good one. I don't care for the cheaper flat grind they have been using on so many of these knives, I think it would be a much better value of they had at least give it a saber grind.
@BrentonCarr

I have as good a grip on this knife without using the choil as I do on my Kershaw link. It's acceptable and I have XL hands. With the choil it's EDC perfection. I do wish the clip rode deeper as you said. great reviews. thank you.

Thanks for the great review! It actually helped me decide to buy one, *haha*. I have a Manix 2 Lightweight and a Para Military 2 and love them. They are easily two of the best folders of all time. Unfortunately, both knives are just big enough that they aren't socially acceptable in public where I come from. They are legal to carry, but even the Manix 2 gets funny looks when I use it for utility. I really like what Spyderco is doing with its 50/50 finger choils. My goldilocks handle length is 3.75" - 4" and the Native 5 is just right. The choil allows for a lot of grip in a shorter handle. It also provides a small break for your fingers should the lock fail or disengage during use. Thanks again for your great reviews! They've helped me build a very proud collection of wonderful tools up here in Canada :) God bless! PS - Have you carried a Cold Steel Tuff-Lite? I bought a mini TL and it is one of the most comfortable small folders I have ever carried. At 3 inches closed, it is an exemplary use of a 50/50 choil. My only complaint is the awful thumb hole. I wish it was round and a bit smoother on the inside edge. Cheers!

Don't grip it without choking up. No brainer on a knife this size. Nice review otherwise, but your hit on the ergonomics is totally unrealistic for a knife this size. Seems to be actually designed to be gripped with the choke up. You're certainly entitled not to like it, but I really like it over the other knives. FWIW

It's interesting how we all interpret a knife. The ergo-challenge that you mention is one that I have with all of the Native's and all of the Sage's. My hand is big enough that without choking up, all of them end up being 3-fingered knives. Because of that, the Native ends up being pretty comfortable for me. Go figure. Really good video though.

You make some excellent points. On paper it seems like a good knife - S35VN, Delica-like dimensions, amazing weight. But in hand it just didn't feel right. I almost bought it, but something about the choil turned me off immediately. I definitely don't like being forced to use a choil, it should be a secondary grip option, with primary being full hand on the handle. All the best,

Great review, first time seeing your channel. Good point about the handle. My hand just fits on it, but it is more comfortable to choke up on it. But for a smaller knife, that's about what I'd expect. Most Spyderco knives I have, tend to have handles that are a bit long for the blade, so I'm enjoying this for EDC, as it provides me a good small, light option. If I want something larger, the Manix 2 has a similar feel.

Great review. I’m completely in agreement with on the ergonomics. My Delica handle, approx the same length as the Native, doesn’t require me to choke up on the choil, why do it on this? Much of the time I don’t want or need to ape grip a knife and because of that I’m lookin elsewhere. Different strokes....

Excellent Review. I completely agree with you on the egos... I have this model and the older one that is a bit heavier. The egos were much better on the older one and not nearly as boxed as you said. You're right, ofcourse. You like (or need) a longer handle and the longer blade that goes with it, then by all means, get a Delica. Or better yet, a Manix, which has the added benefit of the forward finger choil to give you more control in detailed cutting. But for me personally, I love the finger choil on Spyderco and Byrd's smaller knives because they allow a full handed grip whereas most other small knives will not. And ofcourse, if you really want to get tactical you don't need a fingerchoil and you might want a longer blade, most likely a fixed one.

Good review but I must have diff hands because I like it. It is blockier than the delica handle, but since i normally hold my delica with a finger on the blunt part where the finger groove on the native5 would be, it works. I can also hold it ok without using the finger groove. Wish it had a wire clip tho! I think the reason companies like spyderco have so many different designs that are similar but very different ergonomically is because of how different people are and what they are using the knife for or expect of it.
@903lew
@903lew 9 лет назад
What killed it for me was the size and the clip. Size because the things you mentioned and the clip because it's just too big and shiny. If it'd been a bit bigger and with the wire clip...well, it'd have been the Manix2 LW in S35VN (and wouldn't that have been a great thing?).

I don't understand people who use an EDC knife to cut up cardboard boxes. It's flat out dumb. They have these things called Stanley box cutters. You can buy replacement blades for 10 cents. They are designed to cut boxes. It is easier on your hand and on your free time.

I’m normally not a “small” knife guy and prefer my blade to be 3.25-3.5”+, but I will say the Native 5 seems to be one hell of a edc knife. Would I like to see it in a 3.5” blade, well YES, yes I would, but this knife would do a lot of jobs as handle a lot of the heavier duty cuts I use my PM2, Endura S20V and my MKM Maximo M390 for.

There's nothing wrong with a full-time finger-choil. The biggest strength of Spyderco IMO is that their finger-choils are so good they can serve as the primary grip. This allows you to carry a four-finger knife in a smaller package. Its the reason I started carrying a Spyderco instead of a Benchmade. To have a four-finger Benchmade I needed to carry a much larger knife. I can't conceive of an instance where I would need "reach" on an EDC knife.
@eqlzr2

Here's my objection to the Native 5 lightweight: the edges of the handles are (more or less) squared off, versus say the more rounded off edges of the Spyderco Endura 4 or Delica 4 or the Stretch 2. I don't like this. If you're thinking you might not mind this, I would definitely try to go to a knife store and do some comparison shopping. Or do what I did, which is pick up a Byrd Cara Cara 2, which is an Endura 4 sized budget Spyderco with FRN handles. It has the squared off edges to the grips. While I don't like that feature, the Cara Cara 2 is quite an excellent knife in it's own right, and you can get 4 of them for the price of one Native 5.

You should know if you wear a size L glove, a 4inch overall handle will be a good fit but it cant have a 50/50 choil. I wear size XL gloves and I kniw that any knife with a blade smaller than 3.5 inches will ve too small fir my hand. There were only a few 3.25 knives that fit ok but they had no choils. Like you id take the manix w lightweight any day of the week, I live mine with s110v blade, it kicked ouf my cts xhp para 2 as my constant daily carry. I always have it with me plus last 3 months ive carried either a Hoback kwaiback midtech or a Shirogorov hati as well. At 2.9 oz the ltw manix 2 is near impossible to beat for me and s110v has been the most impressive steel I tried in a long while.

Good lord you have less than 2 1/2 inches of cutting edge and you want a longer handle? The logic is suuuuper flawed when it comes to ergos lmao let me guess you don’t like the para 3 either?? The smaller blade spydies with the forward finger choil are all designed to be choked up on - larger blades like the pm2 and manix2 that you noted have larger handles to suite the larger blade - overall not a terrible video but shitting in it for ergos and the handle length is what you’re judging it on is wild man

Normally I agree with the results of your knife reviews. This time however I can't. I look at this knife handle the same as I do holding my Glock 26. This Glock handle is very short and most peoples' pinky finger is unsupported. But that's good. The shape of the G26 is different than most other Glocks. The rounded heel is cupped by the holders hand. To some degree it helps compensate for a otherwise odd grip angle. This Spyderco, at least to me is the same. As far as cutting cardboard, try a thinner blade knife this one is not the right tool for the job.

Having both the Delica 4 and Native 5, I still prefer the Delica. The forward finger choil gets annoying. You lose a lot of cutting edge. If you don't use the choil, you have a tendency to snag.

1. No Liners 2. No washers in the Pivot 3. Longer blade than the Delica but shorter handle. 4. 2 Body screws $80.00 blade on a $20.00 handle.

Great review. They sure screwed up on that handle. I would never get it because it just would not fit my hand. Too bad because otherwise it would be a winner.

I think you are the only person I've ever heard say the ergonomics are bad on this knife,I would c and do carry it over my manix witch is to big in the pocket,and the delica witch is skinny with soft steel..I think you missed the mark big time on this one..

Yeah, I’ve got to agree in general, spyderco seems to have two main blade shapes: the long tapered delica-style blade you see on the Endura, PM2, and Military; and the broad leaf-shaped blade you see on the Dragonfly 2, Manix, Shaman, and Native. I’m a big fan of the leaf blade, love my Dragonfly and the Native 5 LW is coming today. I can’t stop thinking about the Shaman so I’m sure it’ll be coming soon too, thank you credit card and impulsiveness. Yeah, I know spyderco also does wild hawksbill and other blade types but the delica style and dragonfly style are the big sellers.

You actually have the guts to pan a product AND you show competitive options! Other RU-vid reviewers take note! Great job! Thanks so much for the solid review.

Gideons Tactical does this on a regular basis Beaker. That, apart from the general enthusiasm and content, is why we keep coming back... Honesty in a sea of biased reviews and no selling out to companies whims and not accepting free gear for positive reviews.

Get both versions of the Native 5 lightweight and swap the blades/handles. Lol

the fuck with the handle...its a specified length, your hand is as well and when the math doesn't add up, you're not stoked? Measure the handle length to the length of your palm if one's shorter than the other, obviously you run into these problems.

Lol what’s wrong with being made in Taiwan? They have excellent manufacturing that’s comparable to japan. Made in Taiwan isn’t made in China. Can you show a quality difference between made in USA and made in Taiwan? Sounds ignorant, and your comment on ergonomic is illogical too, they make multiple sizes for different types of hand, if native is too small for you, you would just get the manix or shaman.

I can't believe you judged the knife based upon your large hands. I understand that its not for you, and their are better knives out there, but the Native 5 is great for what its intended for. Are you judging the knife for its EDC category or because it doesn't fit your purpose. Please understand that I highly respect your knife reviews, but this is the first time I totally disagree with your subjective opinion. Maybe its me, but I'm looking for an objective opinion based upon the knife, not the size of your hand or it doesn't fit for you. Weak!

You're one of the few people I've seen who uses something contrary to it's design, and then blames it for being the wrong tool, which is akin to driving a bus to win a drag race and then blaming the bus for its deficiencies. Sheesh.

Yup, I will never be buying one. Spyderco has the worst customer service in the business and I wouldn't be caught dead using one of their knives! Save yourself from buying an over-priced over-seas made ugly knife and give your money to a company that actually appreciates its customers!
