Hello mate fellow aussie here! It's interesting to note that Spyderco is phasing in S45VN onto their base (previously S30V) Paramilitary 2 and Para 3 models as of 2021. Since Crucible makes both SPY27 and S45VN I figured they would've used SPY27 instead on the updated models as it is their proprietary steel, however since S45VN is available to other manufacturers perhaps the sheer quantity of S45VN made it a more attractive option for Spyderco? From what I can gather they perform similarly but Im still interested in comparing them for myself in use. I have a BD1N Para 3 LW and I love how easy it is to strop back. Thanks for sharing!

Gday mate, glad to see there’s other Aussie knife enthusiasts out there 👍🏼 I think you could be onto something there, as well as S45VN being a more tried and true steel it is an easier (less risky if you will) option for buyers to go with knowing it has been around for longer and has much more data to support it. I’ve been eyeing off a BD1N version for a while, nice to know it’s easy to bring back. Thanks for subscribing 🍻

Spy27 is only used in combination with the cobalt blue handle. So its kinda limited in use. Dont know how they handle that in super edgy Sprints or exklusive runs. But right now, the SPY27-knives i know come with the cobalt blue FRN-Handle. In the end we have to be realistic though, altough minor variances in chemical formular can have major differences, in the steel department, there are only so many variables you can really change without rendering the steel useless for knives. In every day use, most of the higher end steels will perform similar to an extend, were differences are neglectable. BD1N and 8CR13 have the major advantage against almost any other Spyderco used steel (Maybe SPY37 and Cruwear are good as well), that you can pretty much sharpen them with a fucking stone found in the water. So for EDC and Outdoor, they are the the go to.Most other steels are harder and so are more prone to chips and difficult to bring back to live if dull.
