I carry a para3 lightweight every single day for the last few months and I absolutely love it. Sometimes I will switch to the Mannix2 but the para 3 99% of the time.
Who on earth are these people prying and putting flex onto a little blade made for slicing ? I think these people might need to belt carry esee knives or something
I appreciate that Spyderco is able to produce a blade in a steel that no else can. I haven't pulled the trigger on a Maxamet model yet, this review has considerably swayed my opinion.
I can practically stop the patina from forming, i.e. I can make it look quite a bit better, by cleaning it with Bar Keeper’s Friend metal polish, which evens the patina out quite a bit. It definitely looks a lot better after that cleaning, just be careful not to get it on the G10, as it tends to stain (I don’t have that problem, having swapped all my G10 out for metal).
I’m so excited I found your channel. I’m a knife nut starting to move from buying all sorts of budget knives into higher end things with quality steel. I think I’ve watched all your videos today. Found you because of all your shaman talk. Keep it up!
I’m a little behind on this video. I’m watching para 3 vids now, because I finally broke down and ordered one. I was never impressed with the paramilitary 2, and I have 2, yet I still don’t get it with that one. In fact, I’ve been a little put off by spyderco in years past. Lately, I’ve been picking them up, and giving them another try. The para 3 has always been kinda compelling, and I wanted to try maxamet.
It is a good looking knife. I agree I think it is too much. I like Maxamet would love to have one in collection. I also want a cruwear in collection. I look forward to seeing your long term review of the steel.
Maxamet is an interesting steel and in fact I have one grey frn Manix 2 but to me being stainless is very convenient for an EDC model. For that reason the only Para3 I would buy is the Blue CPM S110V version. During hot days a Maxamet or an hypothetical K390 version (like one of my Delicas) literally could rust in my pocket even without have to use it, just because the salty sweat.
You are going to pay close to $300 for the PM 3 with the necessary deep carry clip. He would be thrilled with it though unless he needs to pry things. Never gets dull.
YOU Post daily, have GREAT taste in knives (SPYDERCO), and prefer PM3 OVER my all time fav, PM2?!! I SUBSCRIBED, and I'm looking forward to learning your back content and newest-forward! ⚔️☠️⚔️
I just purchased the same knife and ordered the same clip after watching Nick Shabaz’s video about how awful the stock pocket clip is. I am glad to hear you praise the MX clip because I have never bought one and was not sure I would like it.
I don’t want the FRN (lightweight) models, because they don’t fit aftermarket scales… ALL my Para 3s, in several different steels, are lightly customized with better scales (titanium, copper and brass) and deep-carry clips, and I LOVE them all! There are some pretty good knives out there, but I consider my Para 3s to be second to very few or none.
Honest question, why do review videos spend so much time weighing and measuring knives. Does it change enough to matter from one knife to another beyond what is published? The specs are easy to find. I just don’t get why everyone does this.
The steel takes a bit longer than others to sharpen even with my Venev diamond stones. However you need to sharpen it considerably less often because of how hard the steel is.
First off. She's a keeper buying amazing toys like that for you. Second. I've broke the tip on 2 Spyderco's. The first they replaced but I'm sure it's because I was active duty. The second I threw in the ocean because I was mad. Those 2 broken knives were not Spyderco's fault. They make cutters, not folding prybars. I, we, have to understand the design and use it accordingly. Great video you lucky guy.
I'm sorry to hear that. I'm also sorry to hear you threw one in the ocean, but I'd be lying if I said that didnt make me laugh a little bit 🤣. Good to hear you still have a good outlook on their knives 👍
Oh, you're sure it's because you were active duty. Please tell us more, about how you saved America with the tip of your knife. Fucking loser. Sorry I'm a year late, just seeing this! =)
@@cliffs1468 now I'll seriously reply as best I can since you're obviously a dumbass and new to the knife industry. Knife companies typically don't replace knives for broken tips. Don't believe me Einstein, try it. The only company I know of that will is ESEE. The fact that Spyderco replaced mine, which is way out of their warranty, i assume was because of the APO address. I may be wrong. As for your immediate desire to attack me because I referenced having been in the military, you may want to get that psychological problem checked out before you get yourself hurt. Not saying I'm gonna do it. I'm not an internet tuff guy like yourself. Plus, unfortunately, you don't live near me.
@Cliff S that was a weird fuckin comment honestly. He was obviously just referencing the fact that Spyderco would typically not replace a knife under warranty due to a broken tip. Fuckin loser. Sorry I'm 2 months late :-)
Veterans and First Responders get a 50% discount ordering direct from Spyderco so the Maxamet Para 3 can be had for $147.50. I have the Lynch deep carry clip on my Para 3 and it works great but like the looks of your MXG clips better. Enjoyed the review.
Has anybody noticed that the Maxamet blade is, apparently, made in a different way than most other Spyderco blades? The broad “grind” is, apparently, milled rather than being ground, like I think most blades are made. If you look closely, you can see the straight, even lines made by a tool. That must be Spyderco’s method of working this difficult, wonderful steel.
You don’t need to use a hammer to install the lanyard tube! But you do need to do some minor surgery. The problem is mostly in the liner, where the gap where the tube goes through is too tight. I’ve found that if I remove a TINY amount of metal (I use emery cloth wrapped around a drill bit) from the hole where the lanyard tube goes through, the tube pops in and out easily! Furthermore, the knife assembles EASILY! Since I remove just enough metal to allow the tube to slip through, while still fitting quite closely, the assembly is as strong as ever.
How does S110V compare to Maxamet in terms of edge retention? I was thinking of getting a Para 3 in Maxamet but since I live in the Philippines where it's quite humid, I decided to not go ahead with it. I do have the S110V versions of the Para 3, PM2 and Military.
I inadvertantly bought this exact knife about an hour ago. I've been watching your channel for a little while now and I've seen your para 3 with the other color scales you have, can't remember what color, and told myself I'd buy one one day. I can't wait to get it in my hands. And in excited to see how well the maxamet holds up. But yeah, same scales and everything as the one you're showing in this video.
I just can't get excited about the para 3. I prefer larger knives but do have a sage 5 which is about the same size. I don't own any maxamet blades but have read it can be a pain to sharpen.
I just picked up my first Para 3, the red DLT exclusive. Fairly new to Spyderco after being a Benchmade guy for 25 years. I have never carried a small knife but this little guy is pretty nice, that being said the Para 2 may have ruined me forever. I just love it, even more so than the half dozen Microtechs I own.
CPM-4V is a twin for edge retention and “sharpness” compared to Maxamet and if it has DLC coating (ie St. nick exclusive) is just as holy grail of a knife and the Para 3 lightweight is much lighter for EDC.
I carry a blurple para 3 in S110V. It’s my edc. I first bought a PM2 but did not care for the size. The Para 3 is a much better fit. My wife got me a Para 3 in Maxamet which I have been wanting. I will rotate between the two. The Para 3 just feels like the perfect size knife for what I need. It is a solid build and I’m not easy on it. I bought some fine diamond stones to use with the Spyderco sharpener. Just touch the blade up every now and then and it’s always good to go.
Excellent video thanks 👍 Just looking at this myself. Love the pocket clip, can I just ask where you got it from again as I can’t seem to find a link attached. Cheers
What brand deep carry clips do you always say you use? I’m watching this trying to figure it out. Just got the Para 3 in S45VN and want the deep carry clip.
Sorry for all the questions 😆 How many cut outs do you have in the frame in the handle? Mine has 1 in the middle-ish. The Para 2 has 2 cutouts. Just making sure mines real. My hardware, jimping, and blade seem legit.
I wonder if the next Micarta Shaman will wear Maxamet? Maybe K390... I'd think they'll run it in a non-stainless like they did with the CruCarta... stoked for more Spyderco Micarta!
I carry the original Mantra. I like it, not a great flipper but nice size good steel etc. I have the para 3 and 2... sold my Titanium Military... too big!
Stonewash lynch clip would compliment the pm3 maxamet perfectly, especially since the scales are grey and the blade is also stonewashed. Wouldn't steer you wrong and also well aware it's 1 year to late.
My first and last spyderco was the Native 5 in MAXAMET. I had a carpet in the back yard about 3 meters long that was all sandy and shit and my mother wanted me to slice it down the middle. An "OH SHT" moment for any knife but the maxamet came out with minimal flat spots. As for sharpening if I use lansky course diamond or medium diamond it comes out chippy fux, the fine diamond (600) works nicely. In combination with diamond 600, ceramic 1000 and a little stropping. I can get it bity arm hair shaving and semi reflective. Although I feel like i've got a Popeye arm after sharpening. C: 2.15;W: 13.00; V: 6.00; Cr: 4.75; Co: 10.00; Mn: 0.30 ; S: 0.070; Si: 0.25;
Curious what you have to say with todays inflated prices. You mentioned $200 for a maxamet was pushing it back then. Now a standard Para 3 in S45vn is $174.99 and the maxamet version is going for $247.99. Is the maxamet worth going for at that price?
It’s always better to speak for yourself in most everything when discussing products that are available for most people to purchase, and Knives’s aren’t the acception to the rule because as you know pocket knives are a popular edc tool for a lot of people. The Spyderco Delica 4 is still one of the best edc options for a lot of people because of weight and the many color options that Spyderco offers. I would think that it would be one of those knives that people would move toward not away from. Don’t knock the lightweight para 3 until you have tried it, I carry one most days and I have many options to choose from but it’s still the one that I go to most days because of the carry ability. Just saying😁✌️😉
Yes the box cutter is a good theory and makes sense except it sucks the joy out of cutting.. Working in manufacturing i appreciate pulling my pm2 out whenever I get a chance, which is very often.
I’ve got 2 MAXAMET blades and both chipped easily with normal use until I sharpened the factory edge off. Haven’t chipped since and only requires stropping once in a while.
I MIGHT have actually handled these blades, my company heat treated these, like 70hrc it was kinda a pain tho they like to warp so we had to fiddle with the nitrogen to keep it from hitting the blade too hard..
@@leotam3372 we take the warped ones we find and set them aside, but when the order is 3-4K PCs it’s hard to find all of them on our end. We have a tight schedule
I gotta check out Maxamet, I wish they made a Manix in G10 with the Maxamet, that's a Spyderco I'd definitely buy, and you got me really thinking about the Shaman MC, if they came out with that in Maxamet I'd jump on it.
So, I use my EDC for chamfering the insides of round holes in 3d printed parts and trimming other plastic things. Would the torsional load of reaming a hole chip maxamet?
Metal Complex I guess what I’m asking is just how chippy is it? I’m currently using 14C28N and it holds up relatively well, it doesn’t chip, but a strop is needed to get it back to pristine
