I’ve been subscribed to his channel for a while. BJ does amazing work and seems to be a big part of the knife community. Some of the stuff he does is totally unique. Definitely a gem!
With fixing the ergos then the blade looks better with the wharnny blade. With the humps in the handle then the hump looks right on the blade. I would think if you want the ergos changed then yes, change the blade spine too. NICE work.
These mods are fixing glaring flaws in the initial design. Great to see them being modded, it's just frustrating that they don't come like this from the factory
My man I totally agree with you with the blade in the way near the compression lock on the Tropan. And your Yojumbo looks awesome, I also have the Yojumbo and Yojimbo.
The thing that Janich was saying about modifying yourself is bullcrap. He knows most people don't have the equipment or knowledge. The Yojumbo should come out of box just like Hilltop did. I think the real reason is that they prefer to give a nod to the looks of knife or it is just lazy design. You would never think that Spyderco would lazily design something but it actually can happen. The other knife you shown is proof.
That Janich guy sounds like a pretty lazy/stuck-up designer that just happens to be in the business of designing knives, but isn't a top-notch designer or engineer or anything. I mean, the answer he gave to LTK so such bullcrap - lol the average knife enthusiast can just simply dremel a nicely done finger choil in a super steel blade on a Friday afternoon? It should've came out of the factory like that. I like Hilltop knives' every modification on this knife.

It's crazy that you did this video these are the 2 knives from Syderco that I want but I want the Yojumbo. But that mod to the Yojumbo you had done made it look better.
Those are some great mods. I'm actually interested in the Yojumbo now. I would have made the new choil big enough for a full finger though. Maybe make it match the curvature of the scale in that area. I might have even taken the Tropen a step farther and removed the flipper tab and added some slight jimping to the wave hook and the spline of the blade for grip.

Spyderco has been resting on their laurels for years now. How long will it take before they notice that literally 2-man teams make better knives than them now? I'm confident they can, but they need to open their eyes and get competitive again.

He did a great job on both knives. Shame on Spyderco for not perfecting those knives before marketing them. Its not like they are giving them away. They need to do the button like on the Smock or use liner locks instead of the compression lock. I have the Smock and love it but I won`t buy another Spyderco flipper until they do them right.
I am always surprised at the stupefying design errors spyderco sometimes makes... Especially for the price they ask. Great and obviously necessary mods on both knives. Hilltop finished the sloppy Spyderco products. I really love that Tropen. Beautiful knife.
