Today I use my big brain and somehow infiltrate North Korea to humbly look at planes nothing else please, I just love Soviet era planes that is it. :P SPYING ON NORTH KOREAN AIR FORCE | Plane Hunting Soviet Era Aircraft
When i was in South Korean army. We actually learn about North Korean aircrafts for identifying. It was very easy to me because there is lot of Soviet Rank 5 aircraft. LOL
@@ramal5708 yes but only small numbers of those are actually comparable to more modern aircraft, the a-10 is great but anything North Korea has would just instantly be shot down by today’s standards
Yeah, especially now there's hundreds of tiny satellite called Doves operated by Planet Labs. Not the high resolution imagery like we got on Google Earth, but because there's hundreds of them, they sometime got interesting stuff, for example they manage to capture a Chinese submarine about to enter an underground base, which is freaking cool and rare!
@@guirohden yeah they do! Idk much about aircraft but looking them both up the JF17 looks just like an F16 with a slightly longer cockpit-nose area. Is the JF17 a sort of clone of the F16 or is it a coincidence that they look so similar?
@Brazilla no we’re not lmao North Korea is a speck of rice in comparison. And America is the steak fried rice. We’re the whole entire bowel. I mean what is there plan to nuke America well that will end poorly because they have a small country
As i'm a homegrown CIA analitics myself, i can throw some light on some things :D 4:00 - just a standard Il-18, 10:25 - most probably Yak-11 trainers, 11:50 - 3 blade rotor is Mi-2, 12:10 - Wonsan International Airport was hosting an airshow in September 24-25, 2016 so there's a lot of military jets; that picturee must be from that time. 17:22 - more Yak-11 trainers, 19:06 and 20:50 - just as you said it's South Korea, after the shape i can say those are T-50 or FA-50 Golden Eagles
@@legodragonxp I can tell that those dirt hills are standard soviet style plane covers, and I can kinda see a runway in a dirt too. MiG-19 are capable of flying from the dirt.
It's civilian Ilushin Il-18 not Il-38. The Il-38 is a maritime patrol and has a big antenna on the front right behind the crew cabin and the magnetic detection long tail.
What about coordinates 12°05'20"N 104°09'05"E ? There's a downed passenger airplane in the middle of a forest in Cambodia, many people speculate what it might actually be.
Looks old, yet relatively recent maybe 2-6 months ago? (atleast at the time of the satellite taking that picture) as you can still see some ash around the plane I suspect it's an 80s aircraft, as those have the swept tailwings.
That was proven to be a very lucky moment, the plane happened to be flying there and the satellite took a picture of it there. Its a rare occurance lol
Steve, I get so lost between Wiki and Google maps sometimes! Being a history/geography guy, in addition to a Combat Veteran, I TOTALLY get you, and this concept, all the time! Thanks for being you Brother!
a relative of mine visited ussr for work in the late 70's to early 80's and got the opportunity for some reason to visit one of the airfields of st petersburg(leningrad) and he saw the runways lined with fighters with their tires empty just sloughing. This was probably for us satellites to see big numbers of aircraft.
He didn't say anything bad about NK, in fact he was more impressed, I bet the NK spies are impressed by his plane guesses and wanna invite him over to check out the bases
I loved doing this back in the day, around """Grooms Lake, NV""" :P There is some seriously weird shit to see out in that area, due to all the military bases and the ordinance ranges. Tank targets, bomb targets, huge craters, weird nazca lines type stuff drawn in the terrain. Sadly, I don't have the bandwidth to do it these days, after moving to a rural area with crappy LTE-only :( (The big green cricles everywhere is farming stuff though, so don't get distracted.)
I do this, but I look for signs of abandoned railroads and then research their history. Occasionally for the local-ish ones. I'll take my metal detector and scout for old stuff.
10:58 those would be Yak-52 trainers, considering there's a load of them that seems to be a training base for new pilots. And that plane on the taxiway looks like it's actually taxiing. In all the airfield looks active with all of those vehicles around too
Ah,the Zhou shui zi airport at 21:36. I went there ever year when I was a kid. I remember there are some military cargo planes and old Migs hiding in the corner sometimes. Also, because it's Dalian, there are warships everywhere, you can even see people building aircraft carrier from the city.
I recommend looking around the old airport in my home city Dhaka in Bangladesh. There are aircraft of different eras scattered everywhere, and you can even look at bengali air force installations and anti air missile silos. The most interesting thing I found was an old british hurricane resting in a glorified ditch.
@@kakagakakerger4165 I believe he's referring to Tejgaon Airport. If so I located it, I've spotted some MiG 19/21's there. Also tons of helis. Coordinates are 23°46'49"N, 90°22'52"E
At around the 11 minute mark, those prop planes are trainers. It costs a lot less to run those, so they are also used to keep up proficiency. The jets are flown very sparingly. The long nosed plane that looks like an F104 is probably an SU-15. The Soviets were known in the late cold war era to give NK the retired, obsolete, or less desirable of their aircraft.
What a father does in his free time, without kids or womans, looking at NK air bases with a relaxed voice, so relaxed you hear his keybouard and mouse, doing research as a professor with some Beethoven on the background.
3:00 some maybe is Mig-17, but is blurry enough so Mig-15 is a good guess. 4:00 its probably An-12. Il-38 is too modern for North Korea (they not purchasing modern aircraft for 5+ years). 6:15 the resolution too blurry. No personal guess here 8:20 Mig-21 or Chinese copy of Mig-21 (J-7). Could be Su-7 with some weird angle. 10:40 its An-2, the angle make it look more like monoplane. They have around 200 in service. 11:50 Mi-2? Must be it. Idk any other soviet triblade chopper. Edit: you could be correct, Mi-4 is also triblade, and NK have some. 12:30 Mig-21 or J-7. 12:45 Mig-15 or Mig-17. 12:53 you're correct. The one and only, Su-25 Frogfoot. 13:05 yeah Mig-29 with some Il-28 on the side of it. 16:20 yeah another An-2 base. 19:10 could be SK F-16, also could be FA-50. I don't have anything to measure the size though 20:15 could be SK F-5. I'm not sure its still in service 13:38 Afaik no Tu-14 on NK. I could be wrong though 13:42 the booze bomber is the old Tu-22 (not to be confused witj Tu-22M) Done updating
@@lionel6548 probably. Must be something out of service, the only heavy transport i knew still in NK service is An-24. But An-24 only have 2 prop. Edit: yeah it could be their commercial Il-18
You can do this with Swedens military airfields aswells and you can find: Jas Gripen, Viggen, Draken, J29D, J32B etc. Altough the majority of the aircraft are in hangars but the hangars are also quite interesting to look at because they are sometimes blended in with the environment.
PLEASE do more videos like this! Its really fun to see different types of content that are relatively around the same genre of war things, and besides I think we can all agree war thunder gets tiring sometimes! I look forward to different videos in the future and see you fall deeper into insanity!
20:00 The FA-50 is a light combat aircraft manufactured by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) for the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF). It is a light combat version of the T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic advanced jet trainer and light attack aircraft. I think they are the FA-50 as opposed to the T-50 due to the presence of the F-5's meaning they are an active combat unit as opposed to a training unit. The "MiG 28's" were F-5's
@@swordsman1137 they are not F-16's. watch the vid again and see how he compares it with F16's but he knows for sure (as do I) that they are not F16's. Everybody knows what an F16 looks like. Look up FA-50/T-50 and delete your comment.
@@swordsman1137 They are very similar in size so just "measuring" wingspan etc won't tell you squat. If you insist, use the F-5's as a measuring stick. But there is no need because the F-16 doesn't have lerx like this jet (see an F-18's wing for an example of very pronounced lerx)
@@toolbaggers why i need to delete? If i'm wrong its okay. The reason i'm saying it could be F-16 because the wing is not straight enough for me. But maybe its just because the shadow from the tree and its true that actually FA-50
I used to do this all the time with Google Earth. A interesting base is right by Saratov, Russia. Russian Strategic bomber base Engels-2, mostly TU-95 and TU-160 bombers. Plus a outdoor museum next to it with various older bombers and various aircraft. As for North Korea, most of their older aircraft like MiG-17s, MiG-19s, and IL-28s are Chinese copies, same with most of their MiG-21s. But they do have some proper Soviet MiG-21s. The props are probably Yak-11s and Yak-18s. There's one airbase I saw in North Korea that has a bunch of AN-2s but also what looked to be C-47 Dakota's. These were probably Il-12s or even Li-2s.
Funfact, during one airshow NK Mig-29s are spotted having RGB lights in Blue Red White pattern, and this isnt a joke The lights are installed underneath the wing PS : I dont live in north korea but, near where i live there is an Active Airbase home for F-16s and near the gate of the airbase there is a bunch of migs and TU-16 as a gateguardian
They look like bombing targets tbh. The way they're laid out on a dirt runway (Not suitable for real jet planes) suggests a training range for North Korean pilots to practice bombing runs on an airfield.
I grew up on Air Force Bases around the world and I still occasionally go look at the bases I lived on. Whiteman in Missouri (with the B-2, A-10, T-38 and AH-1s) and Robins in Ga with C-5s, C-141, JSTARs, B-1s, C-17, F-15s and whatever else was there getting fixed. Definitely fun
I was born in 85 and grew up about a mile downrange of Runway 09/R (main T.O Runway) at Heathrow.. Looking at all the longbody Cargo's and more obscure Props in this video really reminded me of the _sheer variety_ of aircraft we used to see flying over.. I can even remember how fkn *loud* some of those rear engine Cargo Planes were, and the streaking exhaust 😂 Sky looks and sounds completely different these days... uniformity, like.. Never really thought about it before... of all videos I did not expect a nostalgia hit from, satellite imagery of N.Korean Airbases is right up there lol Thanks Phriend ❤🇬🇧
Well not many air forces really park their fighters, bombers or attack aircraft out in the open, except for large or medium transport planes. For fighters they usually store them in hangers or park them under a roof spaces, so the satelites or aerial cameras won't see if the aircraft are there or not.
I feel like the first airport(2:50) I think you probably didnt see aircraft cause it looked like the base was in the mountain, see how the road mysteriously ends right where a cliff is
@@swordsman1137 you never know, there are obviously underground military bases across the world cause we wouldn't need a bomb called a bunker buster, in fact the us has the largest non nuclear bomb and guess what it's made for blowing up bunkers and bases, massive bases and bunkers that need a 18,000 on bomb
13:00 those look kinda like the yak-141 but strongly doubt they are XD Also those jets earlier before look like mig-17s and mig-19s than mig-15s with that kind of sweep Some of the props look like they're shengyang J-6s or their yak equivalents (twin seat trainers)
There’s no way those planes aren’t piles of garbage. I work on planes that are maintained 24/7 and they still have hella issues. And those things just sit outside all day.
Phly, you've brought back the "Everybody" intro right? Well, there has been a certain song kinda stuck _In My Head_ phor a while that you could also bring back! Attempt # 242 The song i mean is Virtual Riot - In My Head (feat. PRXZM)
Day 41: Phly, you should play the Hawk III Chinese fighter; 900lbs of bombs in a biplane at 1.0 that you can dogfight in after dropping. Totally balanced.
JESUS! I was just looking at some MiG-19s parked at a North Korean airstrip with huge blast areas behind them (38.90129127147621, 125.23369823500614) on google maps less than 10 minutes ago.
Day 13: Hey Phly, ive been watching you for nearly 2 years, but i downloaded the game 4 weeks ago, im grinding the Russian tree, BMP, T-80 and T-90. I play RB, and ive reached the PT-76B along with the T-34/57. I get 1-4 kills each game. Ive noticed that extremely many of my controls, especially in Air battles are unassigned, and im unsure what every one of them do. I cant seem to find a video where you show all your controls and keybinds. If you have made one, would you link it for me? If you haven’t made one, id really love to see one! PS! Mini Phly is so cute! Love from Norway.
Trust me dude, phly is the last guy to ask about key bindings and stuff. If you really want to know what certain buttons do then search reddit for answers or ask questions. There are good youtubers out there like hunter that do tutorials on how to set key bindings for stuff like ccip bombing and so on. And btw most buttons literally are so specific that 99.99% of the vehicles cant even use them, so they are pretty unnecessary when it comes to air rb. I am playing this game since 7 years and still didnt figure out 60% of the key bindings and i am still an above average player
17:28, I'm seeing two Spitfires, an F4F Wildcat, and a Ju-87 in that pile. Stuka is the center right aircraft of the lower pile. Wildcat is to the front by one row and left. One of the spitfires is in upper pile, top right.
@PhlyDaily paperskies video is about tu22 a supersonic bomber tu 28 is a completely different aircraft i would recomend you to read abut it(tu28) and su15 those are very interesting interceptors aircrafts that i think could even be added to war thunder.
@@Ghost0fPakistan I'm sayin STILL they'd take em...it'd be like an Afghanistan thing, as soon as we left in what the 60s the north took the south just like that...I think it was siagon was the battle, that once they took that they had the south...if I'm wrong straighten up I'm not too familiar off the top of my head w the subject to be quoting dates and battles....but I'm pretty sure it was the fall of siagon that led to the north taking the south literally right after we left just like in Afghanistan, the south doesn't want or doesn't have the capabilities even w 100k more men and more modern equipment to take on a ruthless enemy like the north....nk would cuts its nose off just to spite their face! ☠
I’ve documented many aircraft within the Edwards Elgin and China lake ranges it’s actually quite sad what aircraft I found b-52s f-102s f-106s f-101s f-84s b-47 f-100s etc just either left to rot or shot down in the deserts/ forests
21:15, Phly looking at South Korean Air Force base with F-16 on it, searches up F-16 from above, sees its the same, but still thinks he's looking at a North Korean base, "But I know its not." Also, North Korean Air Force General watching the video be like "Ah ha! So that's where I put all those old Migs!" Phly, your aircraft recognition skills are pretty damn good. I really liked the video. Couldn't really hear the classical music very well because it was quite quiet, but I say you've got decent taste in classical music from what I could just about hear. I have one request: more of these videos please? Also, don't answer the door for a few weeks. It's probably either the North Koreans because you found their hidden planes, or the CIA because they want you to find more of them.
Hey Phly! I’m a Geospatial Imagery Intelligence Analyst by trade and this is what I do for work every day. Not the same locations as you showed in the video but just looking at satellite imagery to assess airfields and ports to determine order of battle. Loved the video man
The airbase at 12:30 , airport Wonsan - Kalma Int Airport was actually used for North Korean Air show back in 2016, many foreign journalists and aviation enthusiasts were invited, and there are clips of Video from the air show around RU-vid as well so check them out~! The planes at SK 21:24 They are either FA-50 attacker or the trainer version that SK and US developed I think w
Sadly US not buy any FA-50/T-50 as their jet trainer. Its lose in T-X jet trainer competition. Edit : they could buy some just for research or something, but the winner is from Boeing.
Im glad im not the only one who looks at military bases on google earth. Finding an f-22 at a random military base or looking around aircraft graveyards is pretty entertaining from a nerds perspective.
I used to fly in TU-154 from Moscow to Turkey when i was a kid. Very noisy aircraft from inside and outside, you can always hear them coming from kilometres away bot like airobuses that sometimes sneak upon you... Now I rarely see soviet aircraft above my head these days.
Military Jet Boneyard in China: 33.685236, 112.890325 Tons of Mig-17 (J-5) Mig-19(J-6) and Il-28 (H-5), more Q-5 in the hangars. Two taxiways towards the caves that were cold war bunkers, like the Cheyenne Mountain.
AN-2 are used for agriculture, spray birds, also regional hops for small cargo and some passenger. Those other planes on the airfield revetments are more then likely "spare parts".
The planes that looked like f16 in Chinese airbase, it seemed to be JF-17, the Chinese - Iranian modern fighter jet. Pretty rare bird, you were lucky to spot it. And another plane on this airbase was definitely J-11, the Chinese version of Su-27 flanker.
thats some numbers of old era planes they look like they been in the sun for so long without maintenance or got abondoned that still metal can be use just need to melt it
14:15 That might be all of the DPRK's Mig-29 inventory right there in one place. Those medium bombers to the right are IL-28 beagles. I can't believe they are using so much ancient gear. They obviously know they are being watched which makes me think its some sort of ruse, and all of their newer planes are well hidden in bunkers.
@@titanfallgamerwithnotitanf8187 But they are not. NK uses mostly 1950's -1980's aircraft, why would they realistically use BF-109's and other WW2 planes? They wouldn't be airworthy by today.
@@The_Real_Alpharius I'm not saying in cervice, I am saying old ww2 era monoplanes that came from somewhere, probably brought in after ww2 to 1950, then left to rot when they are no longer useful.
@@The_Real_Alpharius and it hurts to see relics from a monumental time in aviation, rotting, and not getting love and care it deserves, so it potentially be repaired to see the skys again.
Fun fact: there is circumstantial evidence that North Korea was using surplus Japanese aircraft well into the 1950s. A Russian pilot mentioned seeing a Ki-43 in NK colors in... 1953 I think.
7:52 those do look like some 104's there. 10:30 Look like Mig9s to me, possibly some yak props mixed in 12:57 Su25s and Mig29s with bonus IL-28s? 20:50 Those could actually be JF-17 Thunders from China. You should totally make this a series and just cruise around some countries and find airplanes!
