I actually wouldn’t mind a Spyro title being an RPG, but this game pretty much failed miserably. Don’t even get me started on the clunky controls and the awful repetition.
I wonder if the Legend of Spyro trilogy was originally going to take place in the original Spyro continuity? Because some of the stuff in this game is eerily similar to some of the stuff the Legend of Spyro continuity introduced. Plus it would be funny to see the original Spyro with the Tom Kenny voice and all interact with Malefor and Cynder

Every video you will find about Shadow Legacy will never say anything beyond "Gameplay sucks! Didn't finish!" Also...yeah, I never really thought about the implications of a scientist living in a world of magic until this game pointed it out. Maybe he doesn't actually believe in magic and just thinks everything from portals to fairies can be explained away with science XD
The game was... okay, but it did look like the developers just put in whatever they can think of to close off the classic Spyro era (character and lore inconsistencies and such) before going with the Legend reboot in order to give Spyro a second chance. Fun fact: the same Vivendi Games producers who worked on Shadow Legacy also worked on The Legend of Spyro trilogy. That's why there are a couple of similar plot points in TLOS (the special purple dragon breed, an evil Malefor-looking purple dragon as the final boss, the cheetahs imprisoning Spyro and Hunter out of prejudice and fear, an evil dragon who was only brainwashed by the main villain).
Fun Fact: The Sorcerer's dragon design what what inspired Malfor, this as well as Malfor appearing in the Skylanders continuity could mean that he is a "universal constant" like Spyro & Sparx.
I’ve played Spyro: Shadow Legacy before, but I played it on my 3DS since the 3DS is backwards compatible with DS games. It’s been so long since I’ve played Spyro: Shadow Legacy. I thought it was OK. I would need to replay it and then I have my initial thoughts on Spyro: Shadow Legacy.
I had the childhood stubbornness to work through this game to the end even though every fiber of my being was bored with its gameplay and presentation. I wanted to play a Spyro game so I was going to whether I liked it or not. The same thing happened with Enter the Dragonfly.
I played Shadow Legacy. The tone, genre and setting was almost a 360° turn from A Hero's Tail. Almost like how it felt to jump from Jak and Daxter to Jak 2. I'm so in with games that dare to experiment with another gameplay style and/or give focus to the story and lore too (like an RPG/Brawler in this case). Spyro Shadow Legacy actually tried to do that with this game, but kind of (totally) failed to do so. The gameplay and combat system was really slow, and almosy unfair in certai parts, the story hints were confusing at times and even the leveling up stats gets boring. But the mechanic of magic was actually amazing for me, the fact that Spyro LEARNS magic was a twist, but a good one by the possibilities it could mean. The story was interesting, they actually thought on the main elements of the plot a bit deeper and how to set the start, I was actually surprised that suddenly all the dragons were trapped in this sudden shadow realms, along that during gameplay there are notes/books lying around the levels that tell about Spyro's past adventures and even lore and backstory about the Dragon Realms, such as why is called the Dragon Realms. Also I loved that they explored more with the already existing characters, such as Hunter and Bianca revealing they have siblings, that Moneybags married and that we team up with Red! Also redemption and I love redemption. But, the mere fact that the game ends IN A CLIFFHANGER is so bitter. This was the last Original Timeline Spyro game, and in ends in such way... Shadow Legacy is a weird game, yes, but has some merits. I do believe they tried to experiment with the future of Spyro but flopped hard that a reboot suited better for this direction, and it worked enough for a trilogy. Great video! I wonder what would happened if Shadow Legacy was mid succesful, maybe we wouldn't got The Legend of Spyro? *Shivers* Honestly this was a nice surprise, not many know about this game, that it gets the spotlight in your channle today was nice, its part of Spyro's story after all. At least the reignited trilogy sold so well we could get a reworked Spyro 4 with the sorcerer back as the main villain and reintroduced Ember as a new character for Spyro to meet 😅
By the way, the Sorcerer is kind of cool, at least as a concept. Gnasty Gnorc was the first main villain ever fought by Spyro, but in A Hero's Tail he was just the first boss while the main villain was that Red. And then it turns out there's an evil being even more powerful than him.
I really loved this game when I was a kid. But I was too young to be any good at fighting or figuring out what I needed to do to progress and would always get stuck at a certain point. So nostalgic. I wish they would make another rpg but updated for Spyro.
The only reason i heard about this Game was when i watched a video about a possible moveset if spyro was un smash Bros, and of course they took most of his tail and claws attacks from this game.
Awesome video miharu Spyro Shadow legacy is a pretty cool game I've played through it many times before over the years and I beat the sorcerer many times but in some parts of the level when you level up or if Spyro rescues a friend sometimes the game it'll freeze and Spyro won't be able to move for a few seconds then certain items that you want to collect would disappear then other parts of the screen will go back for a few seconds and then it would come back on but overall it's a pretty awesome game I leveled up all the way to the max level I forget how high your level can go to
One of the "nostalgia levels" in this game is Tree Tops, but they placed it in Avalar, the wrong place entirely. That should tell you how much thought went into this.
I played it under an afternoon.... yes it is that short, and it's not as bad as everyone say (not Eternal Night bad, or Enter The Dragonfly) but different.
A few things that was left out in Spyro Shadow Legacy I covered the should Keep His Ability to Fly anytime any level and creativity But Elora The Faun wasn’t included in Shadow Legacy and they didn’t give Elora Family members and that’s uncool but if they did what if they gave Elora a Twin Sister named Flora and Flora would have long dark pink hair and She a Unicorn horn making Flora a UniFaun and a Satyr Brother named Duke and it’s possible they could give Zoe could have had Fairy siblings as well
I actually got Spyro Shadow Legacy at Christmas years ago by accident, because my parents mistook this game for The Legend of Spyro: a new Beginning. I still accepted it though. :3 (Lol) I actually gave it a shot, and and believe it or not, I really did beat the game, but only once. The touch screen mechanic for this game was pretty interesting. And the Sorcerer always got me curious. I know this game wasn't really good and all, but as a true Spyro fan, I really pushed my way to the end with this game. ;)
I tried it but never finished it it definitely felt odd. I think one thing that interests me is that since this is technically the end of the main continuity, this means that Red, Flame and Ember from Hero's Tail is Canon?
Judging by the concept alone, this could have been a great conclusion to the original series! it has nearly every single character from the previous games, it has an end of the world type plot, the villain is potentially the most powerful threat Spyro has ever encountered and is responsible for the villains actions in the last game (who knows maybe for all of them) and it has a more serious and darker ambience, if this was a console game and more effort put into it, we could have had a fantastic ending!....but we got this instead...
i seem to remember really liking this game. It was slow, clunky and it was hard to tell where you could jump, but it had a plethora of weird side characters that i found interesting and i wish they could have explored more. I also really loved the illustrated backgrounds. I think if it was made on the ps2 like Hero's Tail it could have been amazing.
This game was a favourite of mine because it was the very first Spyro game I ever played and then the legend of Spyro came along and I had a new favourite and cynder is just awesome she deserves more screen time in my opinion.
As someone who likes Malefor, it blew my mind when I heard a fan theory that the Sorceror *could* be the OG Spyro counterpart of Malefor because they’re both purple, Malefor’s design being inspired by the Sorceror’s true form, and the game was said to be written by the same story team that worked on the LoS trilogy. Yeah, it may not be the case, but it’s nice thought at the time imo. I had a fan interpretation of him inspired by that theory where this Sorceror was kinda like Malefor in being an extremely skilled purple dragon, but got arrogant about what makes a true dragon over time. He was later banished and cursed into what you see in the game either due to his shadow magic or some accident. I can’t remember what I wrote back in deviantart, but that’s the general idea I had then.
It has platforming and combat, but it wasn't much of a collect-a-thon with flight levels or mini-games. It's basically a lore dump that never amounted to much. It's like some tongue-in-cheek way to say Flame and Ember were in two games. Great joke about Moneybags though!
I remember having this game and got stuck somewhere but I remember enjoying it. I had no idea people didn’t like it. This game and Spyro attack of the rhynocs were the only Spyro games I had ever played. I finally got the trilogy on steam so we’ll see how that goes
I've never played this game but I find it interesting that this is where the original continuity for Spyro ends. One other thing I find funny are the theories that the Sorcerer in this game is supposed to be this continuity's version of Malefor. I mean, Malefor's in both the Legend Trilogy and the Skylanders comics so why not am I right lol Personally, I don't subscribe to this theory but it is cool to discuss.
The whole thing looks like a fever dream, and the gameplay seems tedious and slooooow. Probably not the Spyro game for everyone. I'd still wanna give it a shot (if only for an hour lol)
I have played Shadow Legacy. It was the first DS game I got, and I received both it and a DS for my birthday, I think in 2006. The OG DS, too, and the next update of the DS came out a short time later. I remember only vague impressions of what the game was with the spells you had to draw out on the bottom screen. Once I got through it, I quickly moved on to whatever game was second that I got for the DS. Pretty sure it may have been either Metroid Prime Hunters or Metroid Prime Pinball. Maybe Mario Kart? I don't remember exactly.
Loved this game as a kid. I maxed out spyro and that was it, no more content. It just kinda became wondering an open sandbox. Still have my original save on it...
Oddly enough I wanted this as part of my Spyro game collecting. And it was part in that time frame and managed to score one at an EB games store. I sort of liked it and was familiar with the whole health bar change as I was playing the The Legend trilogy at this time (I think the The Eternal Night was out at this time). However it was a rushed buggy mess and had to start over at least three times due to the game refusing to let me in boss rooms despite clearing everything. it was a 3.5/10 for me as it was fun and creative but very lack luster and rushed.
This was the first Spyro game (and the only one technically part of the original continuity) to highlight purple dragons being special in some way. Sorcerer is pretty much beta Malefor (assuming Malefor isn't beta Malefor because DotD was unfinished as hell)
When I was 11 years old back in 2005, I used to wanted this game: Spyro: Shadow Legacy (2005) on DS the final game of Spyro original series, but as an adult, it didn't aged well. You know, I'm gonna love Spyro: A Hero's Tail and The Legend of Spyro Trilogy from Vivendi Games of Sierra Entertainment WAY much better than.... Spyro: Shadow Legacy. What's my thoughts about Shadow Legacy? Well, I say.... Spyro: Shadow Legacy is......... boring. Shadow Legacy is even woser than Enter the Dragonfly, and especially Crash Boom Bang, and Crash: The Wrath of Cortex, and even Crash Bandicoot Purple and Spyro Orange GBAs. And yeah, I definitely agree with you, Miharu. Spyro: Shadow Legacy has no dialogue, and the story is really bland, and this game Spyro: Shadow Legacy should never be the final game on DS of Spyro original series. And yeah, I love The Legend of Spyro Trilogy, it's a great story, but I respect your opinion, Miharu. So, anyway, I'd rather like to play Spyro Original Trilogy, Spyro: A Hero's Tail, The Legend of Spyro Trilogy, and Spyro Reignited Trilogy WAY much more than Spyro: Shadow Legacy. But I bet Spyro 4 as a brand new Spyro game will be way more much better than Shadow Legacy and especially Enter the Dragonfly. And I'll give Spyro: Shadow Legacy a 1/10 or a 0/10; it's a boring game and bull shoot; and thank goodness that I didn't play Shadow Legacy. As a kid, I actually quite liked this game, and loved all the lore, even if a lot didn't make sense. Plus it being a "sequel" to A Hero's Tail is cool. But yeah, sadly flawed and not a lot to it.
2005 wasn’t really the best year for me. Nothing to do with Spyro of course, it’s hard to explain. But crash tag team racing was definitely a silver lining through it all.
I can see why people would see Shadow Legacy weird, and in some ways, it was. But I quite enjoyed the story and the gameplay, though odd, you get used to it. I liked the darker atmosphere and the villains, as well as the "shadow realm" aspect of the game. Who knows, maybe I'll make a cover of a theme from Shadow Legacy to give it some love
I never got to play it and while I know the handheld spyros didn't work well I think if that plot was put in a console game it would have been brilliant, and it is key to the whole concept of the same universe thing for the spyro games theory, the Sorcerer being the Malefor of his generation, I think post of trilogy pre legends spyro is full of under utilised potential
Played it all the way through when I was a kid. Took me ages to do it. But for all it was awkward as all hell, I did enjoy it. Probably because I was a kid. I remember how creepy and eerie the Shadow Realm music was. But yeah, it was pretty bad. Still has a place in my heart, like that terrible B-Rated Monster Movie you still love even though you know it's crap.
Not sure why so many hate this game, this was basically my therapy when I was bullied in school, a massive part of my childhood, I loved it! :) I agree the DS was seriously weird like I had a game once on it where you touch singing heads with a stylus and you get points by copying a pattern. But this game? This, Pokémon diamond and mario kart was my therapy.
It's weird, the game isn't particularly great, but I have a massive soft spot for it. I guess if I'm in the mood for something slower, while also marvelling in all the weird lore additions (seriously Hunter is a prince and Moneybags canonically fucks).
Hated how the late 2000's were not kind to non Nintendo 3D Platformers Rayman- gone replaced by Rabbida Spyro- Gone Crash- Gone Jak and Daxter- gone Sly Cooper- gone Only Ratchet and Clank was consistent with releases
I like Spyro Shadow Legacy the only things I don't like is the cliffhanger ending and Ember and Bandit falling in love it doesn't go anywhere and it goes nowhere. I prefer Spyro x Ember better and I do like The Shadow World and The Evil Purple Wyvern Dragon The Sorcerer he's a much bigger threat than the other villains combined especially with his dark magic and the way he plans. I want more of this in the newest Remastered Classic Spyro games too.
This Spyro game should have been done Right and been on PS2 and PS3 back then All the More reasons the Developers should make the Sorcerer the main in the new SPYRO 4 Where The Sorcerer Returns and where Spyro keeps his Ability to FLY anytime any Level without Limitations but with New Rewarding Challenges Boss Battles & Upgradeable Qualities That developers of Activision Blizzard & Toys For Bob should add in the NEW SPYRO 4 & if the Sorcerer does comeback then Spyro and he Sorcerer should have an Epic Flying Battle Level Hope To Soar In SPYRO 4 !!!!
You know I prefer the TLOS games over the original trilogy, and even over Reignited, but I don’t see anything special about THIS game. The only kind of praise I can give it is that it’s better than Spyro Orange and Enter the Dragonfly, which are basically the Spyro versions of Action 52 and Superman 64.
I played this once back in 2020 Honestly its was a really strange game and the soundtrack is meh I hate how they made this into an RPG instead of doing something more like a combat platformer or go more into the beat em up aspects (Legenda at leats did that) The cliffhanger ending really got me pissed off that ghis is how it ended
I tried this game a couple of years ago. I wanted to see if it was really as bad or mediocre as people made it out to be. The answer...yeah, it was meh and boring to me. It's a shame that's how the original series ended. Really I think this should've been a console game as well. Because of course they had to have unnecessary touch controls in the game. Like many DS games.
i had this game got it Christmas of 2005. Boy it was a sad first game for my nintendo ds like i guess it has interesting ideas in theory. But the presentation and gameplay is so bland. Also i find it weird how even though we go to avalar we dont see elora of course we dont see her in any of the post insominac spyro games excluding the remake of course. Also treetops is in avalar no the dragon realms.
Just modded my DS and I've been looking at this one on my screen to see if it's worth a play through... But man... Does it look like a snooze fest... I think even the GBA games were funner... Who knows, maybe I'll play it... Maybe not
I've played this game and I can confirm it's PURE TRASH. Even worse than Enter the Dragonfly in my opinion. It feels even more uncompleted than said game; it feels pointless, the controls are terrible, the story is bullshit.
90% of this video was just recapping the game. Barely gave your input on certain scenarios and mechanics. Didnt even use a single soundtrack from the game when its regarded as its best feature. We can see u hate the game, but damn; didnt gotta do it like that 😅
