Another superb video and explanation of a somewhat complex part of SQL and queries. One of the best lessons I found when looking for this information, including a chapter in an expensive book I own about this subject!
I must acknowledge that the best illustration of JOINS I have seen is this video. Venn diagrams were super useful. Now I know exactly what to expect when I use JOINS. Thank you WiseOwlTutorials for sharing these videos. Much appreciated.
Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant stuff Andrew. All you folks watching should also understand that learning basic set theory will give you a MUCH deeper understand of the SQL language. Thank you Andrew!
My database administration professor couldn't explain joins in a way that I understood, but you have helped me understand the concepts much firmer! Thank you so much! You have a great talent for teaching
***** Hey Wise owl I cannot find in my Adventureworks 2014 where to find the same things to perform joins. You'd answered me a month or so back but I can't find your advice. I'm stuck at this part on where to actually get the same things in order to run a join. Thanks
For some reason they cut off. I'll look again. I think it may be showing me the schema only as when I log in even though it shows adventureworks database it's for some reason it has me on the master. I think I resolved it by after logging in also doing USE adventureworks. So far so good. Might be a glitch.
I'm curious, which university are you taking the EDX course from? I took the intro to computer science course on EDX offered from Harvard and it was awesome. They've since added many other universities to the EDX platform and I don't think there's a specification that they have to adhere to.
Hey there wiseowl, I see the positive relation you have with the people who watch your videos and how quickly you reply, it's really touching. I got an 2 part test about Databases in my college, I completed the first one, now I am preparing for the second part of it, which is about SQL only, and I had a hard time understanding all of the topics mentioned in your videos, thanks to your series though not only did I fully understand all of it, but I also really enjoyed learning all of it. I was thinking of saying thanks at the last of the SQL episode to so to say wrap it up, but I was scared I might forget. So I just did it here. Once again Thank You very much God Bless you and your family. Thanks for all your hard work, trust me it is appreciated a whole lot, as you probably have noticed by all the positive feedback you get. Peace
Really easy to follow and very clear instructions, thank you so much for putting these tutorials for all types of audience. Great job and 'Thank you" again.
You are awesome. One of the best youtuber and tutor. Your video always help to enhance my technical skills. Lots of love from India. God bless you always..

AWESOME. YOU ARE A TALENTED TEACHER WISEOWL. REALLY BEING HELPFUL FOR MY NEW JOB. YOUR TUTORIALS ARE CRISP AND ON TARGET. SUBSCRIBED TO YOUR CHANNEL. IF CAN PLEASE PROVIDE TUTORIAL ON R AND PYTHON ALSO.
You sir have aided me in adapting my knowledge of MySQL for T-SQL. For that you get a like and a sub. Keep up the good and BTW, I love the fact that your a Jurassic Park and Steven Spielberg fan lol.
Very good tutorial!! You made it very easy to understand and supplying the sample database you used was extremely helpful!! Can't say enough good things about it! Do you have any video tutorials on the more advanced uses of JOINS by any chance? Thanks again!
I love the tutorials for SQL and Excel. It appears that Ang Lee is in the Directors table x 2, with 2 different id numbers (8 and 107). I noticed his name around the 10:40 mark and then he also appeared in the results of those directors with no films in the film table. Duplicate values in a dimension table is a common issue I face. Thanks.
Wise owl- Me again, you more than delivered on the Excel VBA will you be posting any more Sql Server videos and if so could you possibly work in how to code with the char, varchar and most frequently used type of variables u can change I am struggling with coding to that level. Thanks in advance and keep up all the great videos it's great value and learning you provide.
Hi Andrew, could we have the Movies Excel file which you use for this series of videos - else we will have create entries from scratch to follow your tutorials. Thanks so much for your help. Your tutorials are definitely very helpful.
At about 11:00 into the video where you narrow down the list to only show Directors who don't have a film listed in the database it seems to include Ang Lee, yet earlier in the video it shows him against several films, I'm confused!
Why do the results of the LEFT OUTER JOIN also contain the results of the INNER JOIN until you specify a WHERE clause? The Venn diagram made me think the INNER JOIN results would be automatically excluded when using LEFT OUTER JOIN. Thanks.
Excellent tutorial. I have few questions, (1) How do i decide that which table is my left table and which is right table, without seeing diagram? (2) If Left outer join is sufficient to get the result for the both sides (means changing the table name in right join case) then why there is right outer join? Appreciate your answers in advance :)
(1) You re the one who decide which one is left or right on your diagram. If you decide that "Table A" is on Left, you should write it before the left JOIN ( From TableA Left Out join) (2) You use Right to avoid confusion
***** Dear Wise Owl. Many thanks for getting back to me so quickly. In minute 2 of the video, you say you have already created the database diagram. So, I think I was wrong as now I think I need to create a similar database diagram to yours. I follow your videos and practice as I watch, but have had difficulty creating a similar database diagram to yours. Could you please advise how to create it? I had another question: I live in Australia, and was wondering if you offer any online courses on SQL that I can participate in and get a certificate for that.
what about for example , when there is PO Table and it function in two different ways, like Po number at the Header level and PO at the invoice level. On the header level it shows comment information and on the invoice level it shows the PO number. can't seem to pull the data for both. How can you pull the data for both when the table is the same. Hope i explained this clearly.
How can I combine two tables based on 2 columns? I have two databases, both of which have the columns [Reporting date] and [ID]. I want to insert the columns from one table to another based on the reporting date and ID i.e. ..... where [Table1].[Reporting date] = [Table2].[Reporting date] and [Table1].[ID] = [Table2].[ID] (i know this syntax is not correct but I just wrote it to give a better overview of what I need to do)
Hi, i could really do with your help please! I would like to know how you can subtract entire row in sql from the previous row, and repeat the process all the way down, and create new rows which shows the difference. i have alot of columns but i would like to select specific columns which will be included in the subtraction query. please help! could you please do a video tutorial.i would really appreciate!
great video, in my server studio i cant see the relationship diagram, strange, but when i go to tables i can see that there are relationships, anyone encountered such issue?
Hi! The database diagram is independent of the relationships between tables - you can create relationships without creating a diagram. If you choose to create a new diagram in the Movies database and add all the tables to it you should see the relationships are shown automatically. I hope it helps!
Consider the following database tables and answer queries using SQL. Employee (Emp#, Name) Assigned_to (Project#, Emp#) Project (Project#, Project_Name, Chief_architect) 1. Print the Details of the employee working on project “AAA” 2. Print the employee number of employee who work on all projects. 3. Print the emp# of employee other than employee 39 who work on at least one project that employee 39 works on.
It seems strange but there is a good reason for it! The logical order in which the select statement is processed isn't the same as the order in which you write your code: docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/t-sql/queries/select-transact-sql?view=sql-server-ver16#logical-processing-order-of-the-select-statement
