+cesarpondarkorbit finding any root other than the square root is very difficult. cubed root (3sqrt) is finding the number times itself 3 times. Like you said 3root27 is 3. Basically with this type of question, unless you have your x^3 or x^4 facts memorized, you'll use a calculator. The button is xsqrt.

I felt the introduction allowed us to move on into the more difficult problems. I did not hear but one glitch with sound. After this many years in the classroom minor glitches can be looked over. Your process was what I enjoyed.

It should be sqrt(x^2) = |x| not sqrt(x^2)= x If it was just x then for x = -1 (or any negative number) you would get sqrt((-1)^2)= -1 which is sqrt(1)= -1 which is 1 = -1 which is false.

Oh, and if you plot sqrt(x^2) and x on a computer you will see they are totally different. When you plot you will see that sqrt(x^2) plotted is the same as |x| plotted, not x. And if you do the same with sqrt(x^6) and x^3 you will see it is even more more obvious that they are completely different, not equal.

***** Because the radical sign always produces a positive value. So you have to ensure that if you eliminate the radical by simplifying, then you don't lose that information. The idea of simplification is that you make an expression simpler to work with, but you don't loose any original constraints. Since the original expression contained a radical sign, it could only produce positive values. But if you simplify and forget to write it as |x|, then you essentially have irreversibly transformed the expression from something that can only produce positive values, to something that can produce any value. So it's not the original expression anymore, if has become something completely different. And if you are wondering why does the radical only produces positive values, well, that's because if you have a function like the square root, it only produces one output. That's the definition of a function. You put something in the function, and you always know what output it has, because it only has one. If it had multiple outputs, then which one would be the correct one? And since any second degree equation has two square roots, the radical sign was chosen to produce only the positive one, in order to satisfy the fact that functions can only have one output.
