Squaredrop Camper Build | Willow Poor Mans Fiberglass PMF
The time is finally here! It's been a long time coming. Going into this I was super excited but scared half to death as well lol I have put all this work into the build and this is a huge step that can make or break what the camper looks like. Thankfully, all went well.
I found a lot of different videos that helped me through the process but the one that stuck out the most was The L Wood by Lucy (link below). She has a few different videos that walk you through the process with great tips. I watched them a few dozen times and took notes.
I used an 8oz canvas from Home Depot, they only had seams on the edges so that helped keep it smooth. I washed them with light detergent and dried them on high to let them preshrink. I made the mistake of using the wrong type of roller to apply the glue to the roof, it was too thick. I ended up getting a smooth roller to roll on the Titebond II. I put the roof and front on first then the sides. I'm glad I did it this way because the rough seams ended up being on the top insead of the sides which made them less noticeable.
I found a cheap exterior paint from HD for $9, it happened to be pink but it worked. I did a 75/25 mixture of the first coat. The next coat was also a $9 paint that was a cream color, this helped tone down the pink. This was a 50/50 mixture. I sanded after this coat with 220 grit to tone down the roughness all around. The final coat was an exterior white paint that I did two coats with 100% paint sanding in between.
I will be adding a black trim all around the camper to hide the overlap but also give it a nice look.

This video is so damn satisfying that I feel I built this camper myself! And I'm very proud of the work I did! Especially my 'crisp clean edges'! Well done, ladies! I feel joy!

Yabba Dabba! You painted it Pepto Bismol pink. I didn't see that coming but the paint price was a deal. It plays into the whole Barbie craze. Name it Barbie. Turned out nice.

How is the poor man's fibreglass holding up? I imagine it is holding up well after you did a bang up job on it!

Thank you! It's holding up well. No issues at all. Only wish I had ironed our more of the wrinkles because you can see them close up.

Hi. Just found your video. I am dreaming of building a smaller version of this to tow behind my recumbent tricycle. Do you have a video earlier than this one where you show the construction of the framing and siding, etc?

Of course! In the beginning didn't take a lot of videos but I did take pictures and make a video of all the pictures. Check out my Squaredrop Camper Build | 'Willow' playlist, it has a lot of different videos. Here is a link to me first video I made ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ikxbo7Dy4xM.html

I know this comment is way way late. Do you think that your first coat of 50/50 paint could be sprayed via a paint sprayer? Or do you think that would not saturate the cloth as well. I love you guys so much!
@truenorthlesbians
@truenorthlesbians 8 месяцев назад
I thought about this as well but when I talked to a few people who where more knowledgeable about painting, the recommended painting it vs spraying. While spraying would have been much easier, I feel that it would not have saturated it enough and gotten in the canvas good. It dripped everywhere lol but it soaked up really well from rolling.

Just curious why you mix water in the paint? Does it make it better? Or just less paint? I’m going to try this!😃
@truenorthlesbians
@truenorthlesbians 6 месяцев назад
Adding water to the paint helps lessen the viscosity so the pain can be absorbed into the canvas and all the crevices which is a big part of the waterproofing process. It's messy so be prepared but it worked out great. A year after my build now and still holding strong. Good luck with yours!

You got those corners and details crisp with that iron. I love how the finished product looks. I've been watching a lot of PMF videos lately because we have a big bumper pull bunkhouse that I want to remodel the inside of and I hate the cheesey paneling that came in it when it was new. I want a clean, hard, seemless finish inside that would accept various paint and other interior finishes. In your opinion, would this process work for the interior?
@truenorthlesbians
@truenorthlesbians Год назад
Thanks you, it took some time to get the hang of it but I'm very pleased with the finish. I really can't speak to that though, I know it works well on the outside for waterproofing but I don't have any knowledge of its functionality on the interior.

I've seen the term "square drop camper" what the heck does that mean? Why did you do the top first. I think the sidses should be first then the top will over lap them. Just seams better to me.
@truenorthlesbians
@truenorthlesbians 5 месяцев назад
Hello, a 'teardrop camper' is the more rounded campers while the 'squaredrop' is a little more boxy looking. I did the top first because one has to overlap the other and the final overlap is defanatly noticeable. I preferred to have that less appealing finish on the top where no one can see it instead of on the side where it is at eye level. Structurally I do not think it has made a difference at all, just looks better.

Do you think the PMF is strong enough to take gluing a moulded L trim to the top edge where the wall and roof join? Use like some caulking type glue? I am always so worried about water intrusion at the corners.
@truenorthlesbians
@truenorthlesbians Год назад
I don't see why not, so long as the canvas is glued down properly, the bond is very strong. I would just be more worried about the moulding preventing the roof from allowing the water to run off the edges and puddling up. Good luck with your build!
