+theneedledrop Squarethony Pushtano, you're a Squarepusher fan, but I just don't understand him. Could you explain it to me? I like my IDM a lot more aggressive and mathy and fast. Everyone seems to worship Mr. Pusher but he really doesn't do it for me and I don't understand how he could do it for anyone else.
some of these hate comments are insane. My dad who was a jazz bass player and instructor, introduced me to squarepusher when i was just a kid 15+ years ago. revisiting this hits close to home, as i can hear the passion my father also expressed through his playing
I did a brief scroll down and didn't see any hateful comments whatsoever (thankfully!). In fact, they were all positive. I didn't scroll to the very first comment though - Were the hateful comments right at the start when it was posted ten years ago? I'm genuinely curious as to what the hateful comments were and where they are. I'm not questioning you to be confrontational or disbelieving. 🙂
So complex, tender, smart, variable, inspiring, emotional, deepness, easyness, everything. He had an arm or hand injury some years ago due to a fall, on ice i remember - then came "Damogen Furies" (Not 'Ufabulum' as i remember). Waiting along time for "Solo Electric Bass II".
Why must people limit artists? If you looked into Squarepusher's past you would see that he has never restricted himself to a genre or methodology. You shouldn't either.
Tom is my greatest influence when it comes to the musician I've always wanted to become (but I know I'm lightyears behind of him). A prodigious multi instrumentalist, always thinking about new ways on how to use conventional instruments, this man can do anything in the studio and make you think that it was composed by an entire band on a fully professional studio but it turns out it was only him displaying his music knowledge that is almost unparalleled no matter the genre. To me not only he stands alongside all of the greatest bass players ever but he also stands above them when it comes to innovation on the instrument. No other bass player that I know of has brought the bass to unknown lands like Tom Jenkinson has been doing on the past 25 years (not to disrespect some of the greatest like Jaco Pastorius and Charles Mingus). This is a very personal interpretation but for me to consider a bass player one of the greatest he has to have 2 of the following 4 points: emotion, technique, diversity (when it comes to genres and BPM) and complexity. Tom has all 4 of those stats above the maximum and can display all of them at the same time. Most of the greatest bass players only have 2 of those, of course there are some exceptions but Tom for me really stands as the greatest bass player and the one who has pushed the boundaries on the instrument the most (I know I'm a little bit unbiased to consider him the greatest but when it comes to this point I really think no one has pushed the boundaries of what a bass can do like him). He's the one who brought the real Jazz musicianship to Experimental Electronic Music and to this day not even on this field there's someone that is at his level when it comes to bring that Jazz musicianship to Electronic Music.
Beautiful masterful playing combined with incredible classical guitar styled right hand technique. It is really interesting on the string how peeps need to pigeon hole a person one way or the other. This man is a musician full stop: of immense skill on the bass and electronically. Further he has a masterful control of genres. In my experience all the decent (technically skilled and musically significant) jazz musicians I have worked with respect him. Credit where credit is due.
Its pretty Clear to me. If I had to name the most dynamic talented and unique bass player in the world, ALIVE right now... It is with out a doubt Squarepusher. He obviously truly loves music, and is very humble unlike cats like victor Wooten who can tend to show boat. Check out his video "Dark Steering" watch the original version . then watch the version where he's playing with, and in synch with a full-blown orchestra. What a bright Idea!!. everyone included is a world class musician. those of you hating on Squarepusher should take a step back. When I hate a band , I sit there and FORCE myself to listen to their entire catalog. depending on the size, twice. Then If I still cant stand it , I know i gave it an unbiased shot. and can move on in peace. so haters, move on, and fucking peace'
true, admittedly I was a bit excited when writing my comment. It is pretty much impossible to say who is better then who especially when they each have their own genre for the most part. And ladies and gentleman if you read my first comment and now this one I am now a Hippocratic! haha. oh well. Side note: If you think about it, most electronic act's do not get any respect, I believe this is because most DO NOT deserve any what so ever. Continuing that thought... are the poison running through the veins of music these days. However I do think the fact that squarepusher decided to play this show, and the audience not only showed up but took a step back and gave him a chance to show what i believe to be the true root of Tom's music, his bass playing. I cant think of anyone in the electronic world that has crossed over in such a way. If I were him I would mark that moment as a great feat in my career. anyone that knows of any other electronic artist that has done something similar please share. For instance Ive never seen Aphex Twin Pull off a show with only a grand piano.... it's quite bold what Toms doing these past few years. Know what i mean? that was to long! sorry about that, if anyone had a spare 30 mins to read this, lol!
+Fig Bender he's a good bass player no doubt but a lot of his playing relies on wacky shit that is definitely showboating thats something all bass players tend to do though
37 minutes of spikey, throbbing, percussive, tickly cerebral goose bumps. Tumbling bubbles of discrete emotional responses that tug at the heart, make the blood rush thunderously like thrashing white water, before resolving in delicate, fizzing capillary waves on the surface of a cosmic inky black glacial pool. An ASMR experience to rival any orgasm, with power to wrinkle the smoothest of brains. Most stimulating.
+Ash Bartlett 6 string bass with an open tuning, it sounds great but you can only do it on a 6 string or else the effect is ruined, squarepusher is a great bass player anyways on a 4 string
He is, in fact, in standard tuning. If you play guitar (which has aspects of its tuning in common with the bass), you noticed that the chord shapes he uses throughout are similar to guitar chord shapes. The ultimate give away, though, is at 35:31. You can clearly see that he plays a straight 1-finger barre across all the strings, and the sound is stacked Perfect 4ths, which is basically how a bass is standard tuned. I'm guessing he's B-E-A-D-G-B, or possibly a C on top.
Impressive. I didn’t know he was a bass player. Do have to say I think he sounds better with a drummer but the level of talent here is undoubtedly astounding.
This was the closest I think I have ever got to seeing Jaco solo :) takes balls of concrete to hit the stage for 40mins with just a bass around your neck imo And the dude executes it flawless. Nuff said
To an extent, definitely. The album has all the tracks numbered, but they are not in the order of the track names (like how track two is "Seb-1.09"), which suggests he prepared the tracks individually, but then played them in whatever order felt right at the time. Crazy
this post is for scubapig for someone who obviously dislikes squarepusher you spend an awful lot of time trolling his youtube account. i dont know if you can convince a flock of geese to dislike bread its like your telling a tree water is no good for it. maybe there is a hatesite where you can preach to people who agree with your opinions instead of preaching to diehard fans who specifically looked up "BASS SOLO" cause they wanted to hear him show off. go to another skrillix concert yo, i think that'd be more your cup of tea
Yeah, come back when you can spell and use punctuation beyond the level of an eight year old and I might take you seriously. See you later. I'm off to tell some geese to hate "skrillix".
