Yellow squash is one of my favorite things to eat. Both recipes looked delicious, but hearing the crunch on the tempura squash made me so hungry for some of that. I love the planting tips you shared and I also love that vacuum pump on the freezer bags. I want one of those!! Thank you for another great video!

Thank you. The vacuum pump isn't available any more, the company quit making it. I can't even get replacement bags for it. There are other vacuum bag sealers available, but I haven't bought one.

My mom made a great meal that she called hamburger stew. It had hamburger, tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash, carrots, regular onions, and green onions in it. Then she would put that over rice. It is so good! Love your advice. So down to earth. Thank you!

Hi Erica and welcome to my channel. Are you in the Dothan area? I have friends with the last name of Goodson, who are from the Dothan area. OldAlabamaGardener :-) No, I'm from the Mobile area, the climate there is great for gardening. I live in Fultondale now. I've done my share of balcony gardening over the past years but it's just not the same. I have cooking in my soul and it wants to use the freshest and healthest foods available. Your channel resparked something in me I thought was fading. Thanks.
@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 7 лет назад
Erica, thank you for your encouraging words, that my channel sparked something in you to make you want the freshest and healthiest vegetables you can get. The next best thing to growing your own is to buy organic produce and prepare it at home. The more you can avoid processed food, the healthier you will be. Almost all processed foods, frozen diners, packaged foods, colas, fruit drinks and canned foods have way too much sugar in them. We all need to cut out the sugar from our diet and avoid GMO foods Thanks for watching my channel. OAG.

I tried to grow squash a few years back and then dang stink bugs ate them alive! So I tried again the following year and I added a few "throw away" plants decoys if you will. I planted them and let them get going a week or so and then I planted the ones I was hoping to get fruit from several feet away. Maybe only 8 ft or so. It worked pretty darn good. The squash bugs destroyed the decoys but I got lots of squash for me! LOL Love your videos as always and I can't wait to stand long enough to try that tempura. About another week and I'm frying something for sure!!! Hahahaha Love and hugs!!! 💕 Lisa

So glad I found your channel! Canning tomatoes tomorrow and following your video on that. Wish I could find something on water bath canning baby limas.
@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 7 лет назад
Maria, please don't can baby lima butter beans in a hot water bath, if you do the jars will likely spoil and if you eat them, you will be very sick or may die. Which kind of tomatoes are you canning? If you are canning the newer types you should put some lemon juice in the jar because the newer tomatoes do not have the acid that the older varieties do. Please reply back here and tell me that you read this and understand what I am saying. OAG
@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 7 лет назад
Now that I have given you a warning, let me say welcome to my channel. I appreciate you watching and commenting on my videos. And I am happy that you are canning, but you must do it in a safe way. OAG
@mariaandcream
@mariaandcream 7 лет назад
I have German Johnson, Better Boy, Big Boy and one other variety. I assume it's ok to mix them (?) As for the limas, my neighbor as said she will pressure can them for me after I get the jars ready. Safety first, always, in everything I do.
@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 7 лет назад
Okay, the varieties you named are good for canning. Yes, you can mix them also. You can only hot water bath high acid foods such as tomatoes and tomato juice. All low acid food such as lima beans, green beans, and such must be pressure canned. Canning is great and it helps with the grocery costs. Thanks for letting me know that you are doing it safely! OAG

Why transplant into the larger pots? Why not sow directly into the pots and grow them up and then set them out into the garden? Learning a lot from you Mister, thank you.
@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 7 лет назад
Hello and welcome to my channel. You could do it that way. The reason I start in small blocks is the limited amount of room in my grow light area. Seedlings in blocks don't take as much room and then when it gets warm outside I move them to pots because my garden ground is not ready yet and the ground is too cold. It is my way of getting a jump start on the growing season. If you set plants in the garden, when the ground is still cool the plant will only sit there and not grow until the ground warms up. Thanks for watching my channel. OAG

Hi Charles, Thank you for making and sharing this video. What do you do to control vine borers? All of my squash and zucchini were destroyed by vine borers and pill bugs (also called as rolly polly).
@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 7 лет назад
Hello Aparana, I hope you are doing well. Squash Vine Borers (SVB) are very difficult to control. Some people say you can control them with a spray called Sevin, but I don't like to spray with a poison spray. The little Pill Bugs don't really cause any harm to your squash plants, they only eat dead plant matter. Thanks for commenting on this video. C.

@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 7 лет назад
Hello Gail and welcome to my videos. The natural fertilizer is made up of three ingredients: 1 part Soybean Meal or Cotton Seed Meal (organic), 2 parts Bone Meal (Organic), and 3 parts Green Sand. I buy these at a local farm feed and seed store or my county Co-Op store. The Green Sand will be the only one that you might have trouble finding. You can order these online if you can't find them locally. The Bone Meal you might find at Lowes, Home Depot or Walmart. *_Thanks for watching. Hi, OldAlabamaGardener, I love how you set up your garden! How long did it take from seed to harvest? Also, what time of year did you start? I'm in San Francisco and was wondering if they could grow in cool foggy climate. Also, do you ever bake, broil or grill your squash veggies? I don't do any frying. BTW, decades ago, I learned the secret to making the tempura super light was to put ice cubes in the tempura batter (not long enough to get it runny, though), and once it hits the oil, it will sizzle up! Maybe you'll let me know if you try it. Thanks for this and all your videos!

Hello Pat, I usually start seeds inside the house in late March or early April. Yes, I think this squash will grow in San Francisco. I do sometime broil squash, especially on my BBQ grill. Thanks for the tip on making lite tempura batter with ice cubes. Thanks for comment on this video. OAG

Well, Thank God we didn't flood, but darn near. The apt. Mgr. had the good since to have all the drains cleared of leaves and debris, and I think that saved us. Most of the trees were sitting in ponds, and had we gotten hurricane winds, they'd have devastated the roofs. I'm very grateful, and always look for ways to give back. ALL lives matter!

Hello C. I kinda wondered because down where I live, it's so hot & humid, those plants would burn up. I'm about to plant another zucchini. For some reason, all my squash plant leaves got a yellow outline, and crispy. Thought it was a K+ deficiency, but Gary Pilarchik said his were doing the same. No bug problems, but lots, and lots of rain. I've had to feed them like crazy. Thought I over fed, but with Gary's doing the same thing, I don't know.

I usually have volunteer zucchini but chose a different spot this year. I had bad germination direct sowing in hills. 1 of 10 grew. it ended up being a huge plant. I picked up 2 zucchini plants just to have some summer squash. them 3 plants have me drowning in it. I imagine you could do the same with zucchini as you're doing with yellow squash. they taste about the same to me. I've donated a lot of yellow squash and zucchini to my church maybe I'll freeze some. I thought about pickling some.

Live in west Georgia and love your Channel ..can you please tell me what type of fertilizer that you use..( I think you called it triple 13) and what is the brand name? Thanks
@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 4 года назад
The fertilizer I use is from my local Co-Op Farm store. The brand name is: Co-Op. It is a commercial fertilizer, not organic. Your county probably has a Co-Op store. Which county do you live in? Any triple fertilizer, example: triple 10 or triple 8 will work, the numbers indicate the amount of the three basic fertilizers. If you were using triple 8, (instead of triple 13) then you would need to use a little more of it. You are welcome, I am happy to share my experience with you. Thank you for watching my videos.
