College Hill Farm is a Homestead/Hobby Farm operated by Joel and Crystal Eldridge. We homestead, garden, can, freeze, store, dehydrate, raise animals, vlog, and write about the homesteading way of life, which is really an Appalachian way of life for hundreds of years. We provide time honored traditional advice from years of experience. We also try new things we have never tried before to see how they work for us. Be certain to visit our channel page at / collegehillfarm On the page you can see our trailer which details why we are on RU-vid. So subscribe and join us on our journey. If you hit the little bell it will notify you when we upload videos. We upload every Sunday-Tuesday-Thursday. Sometimes one or sometimes 5 videos are uploaded depending on what went on on the homestead that week. Feel free to contact us by snail mail at College Hill Farm PO Box 89 Paint Lick, Ky. 40461 You might also catch up with us at Village Fest - In the Historic Village of Paint Lick the first Saturday in October.

Last year I put bug dust on my squash and a couple of plants lived until late fall. Pumpkins grow great in Louisiana but the vine borers wipe them out and I try to avoid using a bunch of poisons. Some sort of bug even ate half my very tiny figs soon after they became visible on the trees. So for the first time I had to use dust on figs!

I have using dust but I have a supply. Around here if you don't spray fruit trees they are full of little white worms.

@@CollegeHillFarm Yep, that`s why I didn`t plant plums and peaches. I`m doing dwarf mulberry, figs and pineapple guava. Later I may try other things but the Asian Pears I wanted to plant were way too expensive.

I notice the vine borers show up in central Louisiana on July 1st. The more mature yellow squash are really good stuffed with seasoned hamburger and baked. The only way I can get southern peas here now is eat the young green pods because when the peas for each one will have a hole and a grub in it. And a new type of worm appeared this year and attacked the leaves on over 90% of my plants including peas, carrots and tomatoes. I feed the birds here and see them chasing the tomato horn worm moths. Those are eating my Cape Gooseberries. PS: RU-vid deletes half my gardening comments. They can`t stand anyone freely communicating.

Thanks - we have plenty of the horn worms too. Pick them off with the black lite. Chickens love em.

They are green with spots about 2 inches long when full grown. www.almanac.com/pest/tomato-hornworms

@@CollegeHillFarm lol,I was referring to comment about worms eating everything including 🍅 plants, I figured it was army worms, I never used to have them, but last year they were in tomatoes, muscadine vines and about everything else.

What do you do with the plants you pull?
@CollegeHillFarm
@CollegeHillFarm 14 дней назад
I just let them lay where they fall. Any new hatched svb will not make in those dead plants.

I got a cheap electric weedeater to use with my portable solar batteries but they shut down and show the error code for short circuit.

So far I have been pretty satisfied with this bauer. It ain't heavy duty though.

@@CollegeHillFarm I use a battery powered mower. As long as you don`t run the lithium ion batteries dead or get them hot you can get at least several hundred to 500 cycles from them. I stop when mine reach about 40% and recharge. It only takes running them dead just once to ruin them.

I almost bought one of the green works mowers but to be honest I use a push mower so seldom it wasn't worth the cost.
