It is becoming increasingly clear that the United States' influence in the Sahel has diminished and its grip on Africa is slipping away. In a significant development, Niger made headlines in March 2024 by becoming the first African nation to terminate its military partnership with the United States. Presently, US officials are in talks with Niger's military government to maintain their presence and base in the country. However, it remains uncertain whether Niger's government will agree to this proposal. Despite its waning power, the US is persisting like a dying horse, unwilling to let go in its attempt to win over some African leaders. This is evident in a controversial and cowardly move recently made by the US, where military commandos were sent to visit Equatorial Guinea, a country known for its corruption, abuse, and repression. Interestingly, this visit was not for leisure, but rather to provide humanitarian aid and financial assistance from the US government.
A dictator who has ruled for more than five decades. The U.S. anticipates that this assistance will sway the president's favor and strengthen their relationship with Equatorial Guinea. Commander Michael White, the defense attaché at the U.S. embassy in the country, expressed his optimism that this contribution would mark the start of a productive alliance. David Gilmour, the U.S. Ambassador to Equatorial Guinea, also echoed these sentiments, expressing his desire for this gesture to open doors for future collaborations with the country's government. Typically, interactions between nations are seen as positive. However, when a country like the United States, which claims to uphold democracy, human rights, and anti-corruption, is willing to cooperate with a regime that contradicts these values solely to maintain a military presence in Africa, it exposes their hypocrisy.

I don't think they are begging. They don't have to beg, at this point. I think they have a strategy. The fact that this strategy includes working with one of the most repressive governments in Africa, is troublesome.

I always give a benefit of a doubt when a narrative like this one, because there's always two side of the story. Although the man has been in power for so long, and there's a lot of poor people despite its natural resources, surely it doesn't look that bad.
