Sangwoo was trying to commit suicide.It's Lightning Coal, a heating fuel used only in Korea, and it was a scene where he was about to die of carbon monoxide poisoning in an enclosed place.(Foreigners think it's aromatherapy ^-^;)

I’m not done with the series yet but this episode stood out so much to me. They completed went away from the norm by actually bringing our main characters out of the game in order to truly show the harsh reality of their lives outside and why they would even consider this in the first place. I was in disbelief when they acc followed thru on the democracy. Great show n great reaction.

Couldn’t agree more. I was 110% certain the old man would pick green! The first thing I thought when watching this episode was, “If he picks X then there would be no show. He is GOING to pick green.” Little did I know that there was a reason he picked X so it gives the players a choice a come back, given what they’ve experienced in the first game and their harsh lives. It’s a fantastic show and concept! Really broke my expectations

It was an illusion of choice; None of them had better options than to return. The game's participants were chosen from the most desperate people in their society with inescapable debts, and people owing money to criminals especially had to return or else they'd just be beaten and killed.

The concept is so intense....their normal lives are just as hellish as playing these death games....except that they actually have an illusion of hope in the death games so they fall in like moths to a flame. :/ Korean shows packing some heat recently. So many good gems like Kingdom, Signal, My Mister, Sweet Home and now Squid Game.

@@jimmyha1898 you can see how much pride koreans have in their film making. hollywood has been pushing out trash and unoriginal b movies for decades now meanwhile korea is dominating the movie market with compelling well written stories mixed with relatable drama. they know that being relatable sells well to audience. when they portray a poor life, they definitely do it right.

episode 2 is the episode where you can be more attached to every main character and you will be more sad or happy if something happen, thats what i like about korean drama, they play with our feelings really good

I agree the show is amazing but that has nothing to do with “k-drama” it has to do with the director. i dont think it makes sense to just stamp a label on every show just because its korean. people wouldnt compare US shows like how I met your mother to game of thrones. squid game is its own show and so is any show. its when we perceive an entire country’s industry as one genre when that we lose track of the individual art of media.

"Every player has to agree" is a translation error. "Everyone" is considered to agree through the process of democracy/voting. That said, it would be an interesting premise for it to have to be unanimous - and then people trying to eliminate the dissenters in later games so they can all escape.

By the way, the title of the episode is a reference to "Hell Joseon" or "Hell Korea", it's a term used mostly by younger Koreans, to satirize and criticize the socioeconomic situation, unemployment, and working conditions in South Korea. The movie Parasite is also based around this general concept.

thanks so much for the context. i feel like sometimes subs translation really doesn't do justice to the real context/meaning hold by the words in their original language. i feel the same when i watch chinese/taiwanese dramas and then reading the english subtitles makes me feel like the translation is so loose and literal.

trivia: the writer/director himself was in this hell a few years ago. he was heavily in debt and didnt see a way out. he imagined himself a game where he could win money.

In hindsight, this episode elevated Squid Game to a masterpiece status. It give the players a choice so they can get the "hell" out of their bleak circumstances in the real world.

Exactly. Makes this concept of a show more grounded and realistic. In real life, alot of people commit suicide due to regret, shame and hopelessness. Here, winning the game can turn your life around.

Plus every main character's fate is foreshadowed. Sae-byeok held a knife to someone's throat. Deok-Su fell off a bridge. Sang-woo tried to kill himself. Ali stole from his boss. And poor Gi-hun swore on his mother's life.

Really enjoying your reaction videos from 🇰🇷 FYI: Many N Koreans escape from their home by crossing border with China. It's almost impossible for civilians to cross the line between South and North Korea because so many armed N Korean forces are there. The things is, China doesn't recognize those people as defectors. If Chinese police catch them, they send them back. So many defectors have to cross at least one more border so they can reach a country where they will be treated as a defector. Once they are recognized "internationally", South Korean government employees contact them and bring them to the South if they want. Defectors can start their new life here. The whole process is... very tough. Many people lose their lives. That's why they hire this "broker" to bring their family here. But even if you hire a very experienced broker, you still can fail. It's very risky. Wrote this so it might help anyone here with better understanding this pickpocket character!

You could interpret the ddakji game (flipping paper game) as a test to see to what extent these players are willing to sacrifice. These players can take physical abuse and humiliation in front of money. They are the perfect type of people they're targeting to participate and commit to the games. The Red Light Green Light game is also a test, they release the "anything but death" type of people; those who don't come back. So those who return are at the point even death won't faze them.

south korea has a lot of films that directly depict or are analogies to the effects of hypercapitalism and late stage capitalism in SK. just like the participation of workers under capitalism, there seem to be a "choice", you can "choose to/voluntarily" take on a job or not (for example), but its not a real choice. its a false dilemma forced onto people, either work and be abused putting yourself at risk and harms way for a deal that might not seem worth the risk, but if you turn away, you'll face almost certain death (starvation, debt, etc). i'll probs refrain from saying more to avoid spoilers, but yea i dont see this as "voluntary" but more so using coercion to get them to sign away their bodily rights

The thing about this show is as much as you believe the players volunteered to go back, they literally did not have a choice. Looking into it deeper, we need to realize the people behind the game are literally targeting vulnerable and desperate POOR people for a reason. Thats because they KNOW they wont refuse. We seem to be focusing more on almost blaming the players for playing these games instead of thinking maybe the higher elites shouldnt be playing with the lives of the poor for entertainment. The illusion of a choice in a survival situation is not free will.

Exactly. There are many situations in which people can be effectively coerced into making choices even if you're not technically forcing them to. Like if I put a gun to someone's head and told them to rob someone, sure they technically have a choice, but do they really?

There is a public conception of South Korea being known as "Hell Chosun" Chosun meaning Korea. Regular Korean citizens have a tough time living in Korea due to low pay, ultra high ever increasing housing rent, etc. Population is decreasing at an all time low and Koreans are simply not having children because it's too expensive. It's not so surprising these people risk their lives and hop back into the game. It's hell in or out.

the 2nd episode is more social commentary on how much people will go for and swallow their pride and bet their life just to escape the real life hell of being cornered by debts which is a very real life scenario like how many adults nowadays doesn't have any kind of debt? and some of us are already drowning in it that the only escape is death. even some people commits suicide just because of crippling debt.

i be honest. they pretty wrong with the vast majority of their predictions but thats because they dont have a wide frame of reference as movie and tv show buffs. they tend to just compare to one piece of media they seen before.

This series is both character AND plot driven, and that is really the one thing that made it a hit. The pace of the episodes is the key, it gets the viewers involved and interested. I did not want to watch this at first, because all the fuzz was about the raw violence.. and when I finally started watching I was very surprised how emotionally invested I got so soon. The characters are very well written and the casting is amazing.

FYI, Sae-byeok (Pickpocket girl) is a refugee from North Korea. She lost her grandfather and older brother when she was in the North, and the rest of her family tried to escape to South Korea. Things went bad and her father was killed during the process. Her mother was caught and was sent back. Only Sea-byeok and her younger brother made it to South Korea, and now she is trying to make money so she can take care of her younger brother, and also hire another broker to sneak her mother out from the North.

Ep1 is just warmup. To me ep1 was little boring. I almost thought of quiting. Now I feel very lucky not to do it. From ep2, the series is so amazingly engaging it's impossible to get out. The best drama series in decades.

I can't help but wait for you guys reaction. Trust me. This show is getting crazy. What makes this drama different from other death game movies is that no one forces them to play. It's themselves who hold them in this deadly game. And these games don't focus on winning the game using their ‘smart brains’ like other movies. Everything happens in luck, instincts, and relationships. Simple children's play is more realistic to me. This drama reflects our reality horribly well..
