I installed locking tuners on my Squier Affinity stratocaster yesterday afternoon. I can't believe how easy it was! First, I picked up some locking tuners off Temu that cost less than $8. They fit into the existing holes perfectly. The new set of locking tuners did not have those 2 pegs for each tuner (like the original, from the factory did) but they came with 1 wood screw for each tuner, The new tuners were large enough to cover the peg holes that were drilled in by the factory and I only had to carefully muscle in the wood screws that came with the new tuners. It was easy peasy

you say one thing and then do another. you said the short posts are for the lower strings but at the end the lower strings have longer posts

Sorry for the confusion, I had corrected myself by the time I installed them, so use the longer shaft on the bass strings.

Not sure what i did wrong. The drill stripped the wood surrounding the holes and the final holes using 3/8 bit are still slightly too small. Any suggestions?

how did you get all the pin holes to align??? saw you drilling them without a jig, template, or straight edge.... i'm going to use a printout of a template I downloaded. tape it on, drill it all out, plug the extra screw holes with toothpicks and wood glue.

Eric, I just positioned the machine in place and pressed down so that the pins made a small indent to the wood. This worked as a sort of template. Good luck with yours!

In this video you say that the different height tuners (short vs longer) that the short ones are for the lower strings and the longer ones are for the higher strings (G,B and E) but you have the taller/longer ones on the lower 3 string E,A and D. Just curious which way is correct?

I think there are other brands that will, let me see if I can find it. I do like the quality of the Fender locking. The tiny holes on the rear don’t bother me and you could even fill them with wood filler.

For sure these use the same holes as the Squier but the price is three times more, fenders is the way to go, great tuners for the money, I have the same mod, this is the brand “GraphTech” 6-In-Line Ratio Electric Locking Machine Heads Staggered Posts Regular price$160.94USD You can get 3 set of fenders for same kind of money!!!

My squier affinity gets out of tune like 4 times in one hour and I’m not doing anything crazy just playing some chords and spider excerise, i need to change the tuners asap. Thank you for the instructions but I’m afraid to do it myself though

Love my locking tuners, and added a GraphTech nut. My squire plays solid now. Highly recommend if you want to invest a few dollars.

@@RichTones I just want to update that i gave the tuners one last go , i bought new strings and after removing the old strings i found out that all the machine heads were loose and there is a small screw on top of the tuners that was loose too for all the six, i tightened the tuners and the screws and voila the guitar is in tune till now.

For those who are poor like me: 1. You don't need locking tuners to maintain tuning stability. You can achieve this by winding on your strings correctly. Either luthiers knot or more preferably a "wind under" (not the name other people give it) 2. "Guitar Anatomy" (G&A) are a UK company who make locking tuners for £36 so you can save the extra £60 you would have spent on fender machines.

A few ?'s 1'st what Gear :Ratio: are these Tuners ? 2'nd how many Ft - LBS of torque does the manufacturer recommend when installing the tuners ? Also do you recommend a torque wrench when installing the tuners ? 3'rd I bought a set of these used and after installing them When I put the strings on and tried to align the F logos on the back of the tunersin the same direction some of these strings would pop out and some would stay in ???

Not sure what the gear ratio is, and didn't care, they are standard Fender Locking so good enough for me. I don't have a torque wrench and didn't need one- just get them secure and don't over tighten them. They just need to snug against the wood. If you locked the strings in, and then loosened the lockers to align the logos, you are basically letting the string loose. These need to be hand tight to lock in the string to the machine. They are on the back of the headstock so who cares if the F logos are aligned or not. This was the first guitar I ever tried these tuners on and they are flawless. Love 'em. What size are the locating pins on the Fender tuners?

Use a 1/16 in. bit for pilot holes and then you can drill with a 3/32 in. bit. Measure twice, drill once! Patience.

He misspoke about the post lengths. The short posts are for the treble strings, the longer posts for the bass strings. This is not what he said but is what he did.

I’m doing this exact mod with the same guitar lol. Can you share what size holes you made for the two little nubs on the underside? And I think the video said three eights for the holes? Last question! Since they are staggered do you still need string trees? Thanks again!!

Very cool! - I did not specify the exact size for the 2 nubs and I think the drill bit I used was probably 1/16th or 1/32. I will need to verify later, but my holes were small enough to make them snug when I tightened the whole machine to the headstock. They get sucked into the wood and become very secure. Watch closely at the 3:30 mark to see this.

This guitar was a Squire Bullet and had 2 string trees, I removed the one for G-D strings, I don't feel it is necessary, and Kept the E-B tree. There is a part available for a three string tree somewhere - maybe from Stew-Mac. Good luck with your mod, and LMK if you hit any other issues.

Rich Hoffman thanks for the reply!! I have some I bought a while back to match the TUSQ nut I bought. I’ll prob try and see what I like but it’s good to know what other people did with theirs! Again thanks for the measurements. I was mainly worried about the hole for the tubing machines because I don’t wanna over do it haha!
