I had the same problem. I have a birdhouse on top of a 18 steel pole. Then about 5 ft below I have a feeder. The squirrels would jump from the fence to the pole. So I greased the pole. Now my neighbor sits on his patio in the morning drinking his coffee and watches the squirrels jump to pole and slide down....over and over again. He says it's his morning humor.
Imagine being the squirrel and trying to figure out why one day you climbed it with no problem but the next day it hurts to climb it. It's kind of funny to think about
Man, the sound track takes me back to the 70's I could just keep the sound track on repeat, grooovin' through the day. We're making the squirrels evolve. They'll be ready to take over when Humanity destroys itself. Edit: Smoke coming out of those little ears, you can see the electrons flowing in that little brainiacs skull.
I got to admit….. you’re GOOD ! I have been watching videos of people trying to stop them from eating the birds food, they always give it up, you 😂 😂 ! I thought I was persistent you took the cake, bravo 👏🏻
You created a system that effectively prevents squirrels from stealing from the bird feeders? That's amazing, considering how crafty and persistent squirrels are. The birds are so pretty!
There's a really easy way to deal with squirrels raiding bird feeders- just get or make a feeder for the squirrels. Put it in a place of easy access to them, filled with peanuts, and they will ignore the bird feeders. Squirrels are lazy, and take the path of least resistance to food, unless you try to make it difficult for them, and then they become relentless.
'Zakly! [Squirrelese speak for 'Exactly']. They are so clever and industrious. My parents' back yard is very much like Chunk's [the epic groundhog '20 social media viral star!] Heaveny haven with many familiar squirrely tenants. One in particular has a relationship with my father (mechanical engineer) where it's respectful kindred souls' 'Innovation Outdoor Lab' (i.e. playground). Even though Dad's furry has a nice lunch from a wide open pile of goodies with his yardmates, little dude usually heads over to check out latest modified contraption and does a bit of exercise. I could swear that he looks a tad disappointed if it looks the same. 🙁😂🤣🐿❤🙏 - he stares at it much longer. New cool challenge is met with a flying leap! #NerdBromance
I did the same thing about six months ago. Worked like a champ. Now the squirrels prowl the ground underneath cleaning up all the spilled birdseed. Every once in a while I see one staring at the pole like he was contemplating climbing it, and then returning to scavanging the ground underneath.
Squirrels can be pretty friendly little creatures. I started feeding one at my brother's house, went on for a long time. He got to the point he would climb right on my knee and take food from my hand. They problem came when he told his friends about me. It made me nervous to go out in the morning and see 15 jittering squirrels all sitting in the driveway not afraid of me. Waiting for a hand out. My brother was pissed 🤣🤣🤣
leadbutthead - Depends on what they were shot with. Paintballs are good and harmless. .22’s not unless the shooter is cooking, I am always looking for good recipes!
I don’t think 12 volts is torture, rather more like a wake- up call🐿🐿🐿🐁🐁🐁 if more it would sizzle the fur on its tail making it look more like a long haired rat
I was expecting his little skeleton to become visible for a couple of seconds each time he touched the wire... Three days later he's wondering why balloons keep sticking to him...
13: was delighted to see a Baltimore Orieole. We had a pair come to our property two years and never again. The 1st year 2 males fought along our fence line till they were so exhausted they lay motionless (10 minutes) I finally went out to see if they were even alive. They were and flew away! All sorts of sparrows, chickadees, occasional nuthatch, 3 species of wood peckers and 3 species of hawks come for lunch (till we let trees grow in so there is no "swoop room" for the redtails) We go thru as much a 300lb of seed over a fall and winter.
Beaker - All the smart squirrel has to do is chew through just one wire. It appears to be the soft plated type. I had the same kind of wires chewed thru by squirrels. I was forced to relocating 20 of them in one month using a HART Have-A-Hart trap.
Thank you very much for this lovely video. The Squirrel ruffling its tail after being zapped when trying to climb that pole and the look on the Squirrel's face at the end of the video was priceless. This video made my day.
Ah 'Sparky' the squirrel and friends 🤣🤣 bit of a live wire this one 🤣🤣 Looks like they won't be 'pole dancing' either 🤣🤣Great vid ! nice to see the birds able to feed !👍
I have a pair that come feed just before dark, especially in the winter months. The male is very timid, but the female will eat while I'm just feet away.
Just got ourselves 2 bird feeders and a "squirrel defeater" (yep! That's the brand name as well). The bird feeder does it's job. The squirrel defeater also does its job, kinda/sorta. As long as it is set to the right height, no squirrel has been able to get to the feed. But those squirrels, though. You can see them look up and scheme their attack -- my wife finally told me, if the squirrel makes it to the top and gets to that feed, I am going out and placing the feed on a paper plate on the ground for them! They've earned it. :D
Wonderful to be able to see such a variety of birds. Great photography. Thanks for sharing and for labeling. Otherwise, I'd never have known the names of the birds except for a Cardinal & the Oriole.
Great pics of the birds, the Red Breasted Grosbeak, the black with red chest is beautiful. We had a Morning dove make a nest on our window ledge, saw the eggs and the chicks grow up the whole summer. I saw a cardinal and blue jay last summer while I was gardening here in Southern Ontario, Canada. Cheers!
Thanks for all the different birds you identified after you solved the squirrel problem. I’m just getting into bird watching and that was really helpful!
@@123fourfive5 Huh?? 👎 👎 👎 👎 Say WHAT?? ALL squirrels ARE ANNOYING Destructive Nuisance Little FAT Fluffy Creatures, they ARE Cute and Clever But they're ALL SO freaking Destructive, just like ANNOYING racoons, Lmao! 😝😝😝😝 😂😂😂😂
If the squirrels, just like the squirrels around here, had any sense, they wouldn't have to climb up to the feeders. The birds are so messy, they knock more out of the feeder than they eat so there's more than enough on the ground. lol My dad wrapped the feeder post with sheets of aluminum with the top sheet overlapping the bottom one so the squirrels couldn't jump up, get their claws on the top of the bottom sheet then work their way on up. Worked pretty good. But your way is way more fun to watch!
I love the space you have in America around your houses. Here in the UK we have 11 houses per acre! Mental, I know, but the UK is tiny and has around the same population as Canada! Great video and innovative use of the zapper! 😆 🐿
Owner of a bird feeder pole here. No squirrels though, but expensive to keep all the feeders topped up for all the hungry starlings. Dried mealworms, suet block/pellets, mixed seed, nyjer seeds, peanuts, sunflower seeds... B&M is your friend (for anyone in the UK)
I have basically the same setup,my feeders are about 8-9 feet off the ground and I have them on pulleys to let them down and fill them.I wrapped the post in black aluminum flashing and put a squirrel baffle on it, I never have any squirrels on my feeders. If I had to do it again I would use a longer 4×4 I had a bear break my feeders once. I like that idea,I was thinking about using your idea around my feeders to keep bears away.
I like this way of handling the squirrels problems. So many beautiful birds and educational. I love squirrels I have a few feed peanut butter oats grapes any left over fruits.
I have one bird feeder and it's a lot of work. I have to think that your amazing variety of feeders is a real labor of love and not inexpensive. You've also figured out how to attract a huge assortment of birds. Very good.
My father in law used to use tubing to tap his maple trees draining them into a tank in the Spring and the squirrels loved to chew through them to get to the sap. A friend and I were going to make a c-clips with an ear on each side to clip over the tubing. Then a light piano wire could be ran down each side of the tubing from ear to ear on the clips and then be connected to a weed burner electric fencer. I know lots of guys that were tapping trees that would’ve bought these clips just to watch those destructive tree rats dance when they got between those wires and ended up getting the hell shocked out of them on the tubing.
