Squirrel Wars - Electric fence bird feeder

The squirrels are defeated from the bird feeder using a low impedance electric fence energizer and electric fence wire. The energizer is sized for small garden animals. NEVER connect directly to household current as this can be fatal to both animals and people. Also see the short version of the video • Squirrel Wars2 (short ... Copyright 2012 Tom Schendel
Notes about building this feeder.
A tall pole and baffle are a more effective choice for keeping squirls off a feeder. Unfortunately for us, anywhere that I could put a feeder with a baffle 6’ up and clear for 10 around would be difficult to see from our house.
To build the feeder, I picked up a small electric fence energizer and electric fence wire from a local Farm store. Note the fence energizer works by touching the energized wire and ground. On my feeder I ran a second wire on the feeder connected to a grounded rod to complete the circuit.
You need to run two wires to and around the feeder. One wire will come from the electric fence energizer. The other will act as a ground wire. The energized wire and ground need to stay far enough apart that a bird will not touch both wires, but close enough that a squirrel will contact both. On my feeder I started with one side of the feed tray being energized and the other is grounded. I thought that after one shock a squirl would never come back. But squirls are very smart and determined. They would sit and study the feeder and try again knowing what not to do again. And some would figure out just where to sit and step to get past the wires and eat from the feeder. Then I would make changes to wire layout to make it harder to bypass. I’m not sure I was ever completely successful keeping the squirls off but making sure the birds would not be shocked.
I would not mind feeding the squirrels because they are somewhat fun to watch. It’s also not the cost of the feed, it is the fact that they would empty the entire contents of the feeder on to the ground in a day to get to the few nuts or seeds that they wanted wasting 90% of the food and making a huge mess.

MD... I have done this myself. To protect the birds, you space the charged & gnd conductors properly for the squirrels body size. Haven't yet seen a bird jolted, only the critters. You can space the conductors across the roof top also.

we had a tube feeder with metal tray and metal rings, so i got a ignition coil, battery and button, ground to the tray and coil to the rings. the old man had too much fun pushing the button, and the squirrels learned their lesson in about 3 weeks

I actually would not mind feeding the squirrels because they are somewhat fun to watch. But unfortunately, they would empty the entire contents of the feeder on to the ground in a day to get to the few nuts or seeds that they wanted. They were also territorial and would chase away anything else that came along. The birds do spill a small amount of food so it is still common to see squirrels on the ground around the bottom of the feeder.

I think you like playing with these bright eyed rodents that come with big beautiful bushy silver tails. As long as they keep coming back for more you know you are not hurting them. These little guys are really tough. Check out squirrel attacks deer on youtube. Fortunately they normally do not attack people. They are incredibly strong for their size, are lightning fast, have razor sharp teeth and claws and you definately do not want one in your face.

I watched a squirrel and hawk fighting on a fence a couple of years back... the squirrel "won" so the hawk took off to a tree top. Stupid squirrel instead of leaving the scene started scavenging about 10 feet away. Swoop and the squirrel was a hawk's dinner for the night.

Squirrels are easy. Just make everything big enough, feeder at least 5.5 feet up, 60 degree cone under it at least 3 feet in diameter and nearest object from which to jump at least 10 feet away. It may take a few days for them to give up and settle for bird spillage on the ground, but you want them there to keep rats and mice from getting it at night.

It isn't about keeping the squirrels from eating. It's about the squirrels keeping the birds from eating. I'd feed the squirrels too if they'd stay on their own feeders and let the birds eat in peace.
@USSTOLEDOSSN769
@USSTOLEDOSSN769 5 лет назад
Squirrels don't need to eat bird food. If a squirrel is hungry enough, he'll eat anything from a mouse to a small snake, even insects. I hate squirrels with a vengeance. These destructive pests can get into your attic, chew up the electrical wiring and burn your house down. Think about that the next time you see a cute little squirrel running around in your backyard.

I installed one of these myself!! Works better than I expected! Ts is correct! DO NOT connect normal household 110 voltage to this!!! Someone or something WILL die if you do! Go to Casa.com and search for Fi-Shock. This is a small animal and pet electric fence energizer. It steps up 120 volts ac to over 900 volts! But when 120 volts is stepped up via a transformer, a lot of the amperage is lost! Amperage is what kills! When a marauding animal touches the hot side and ground side all they get is a painful jolt and that is it! They learn in a hurry! I should have thought of this years ago because I don't like shooting and killing animals unnecessarily! Before I installed it, I'd have to replace a suet block every 3 days or so. I Installed the shocker 2 weekends ago. The same suet blocks are still there! Only the woodpeckers eat it now!

I'd go with a 220 volt line and a 100 amp breaker. Pre cooks them and saves time later. And YES, I am being sarcastic, so spare me already.

It's FAR more effective if you use a 15000 volt neon sign transformer. Just make sure to have the two plates separate, and the squirrel becomes the switch! Hilarious, and get's rid of these destructive vermin. So it's win-win for everyone!
@leonardpearlman4017
@leonardpearlman4017 6 лет назад
Does that really work? I have a pile of neon sign stuff! The fence charger is pulsing and doesn't use much power, though. They're a few thousand volts I think, and will probably flash a neon tube. HM. I think I have a sign "Flasher" somewhere. Think it could really knock them out? Put them in the freezer, and save up for some brunswick stew?

That is not cruelty, get a grip PLEASE. Is it cruel when someone puts up an electric fence to guard something and a person tries to circumvent it KNOWING IT IS LIVE and still gets zapped? Not at all. The squirrel kept going back for more zaps and was hardly deterred. I love animals and never hunt or kill or harm (only love) them but that squirrel didn't give a damn about the electricity all he wanted to do was steal the birds food. He still gets the spilled seed when birds leave anyway.

Maybe I'm missing something but this seems counterproductive. If the purpose is to keep squirrels out of the birdhouse, then wouldn't birds get electrocuted trying to get in, too? Not all birds are going to fly directly in the hole; they're going to walk around it, too.

Squirrels can take a hundred pounds of sun flower seed out and bury it in a few days, yet you want them on the ground under the feeder. What is left on the ground will draw rats and mice at night. Some neighborhoods demand everybody remove their feeders as a rat control measure. Just put a big enough upside down funnel under the feeder and make everything else a little too far to jump and the squirrels are an asset rather than a problem. Besides they are beautiful and fun to watch. They are also really tough and can readily whip a sewer rat. I've seen it.
