A new phase-changing material built from wax and foam developed by researchers at MIT is capable of switching between hard and soft states. (Learn more: mitne.ws/1wlz4bn)
Robots built from this material would be able to operate more like biological systems with applications ranging from difficult search and rescue operations, squeezing through rubble looking for survivors, to deformable surgical robots that could move through the body to reach a particular point without damaging any of the organs or vessels along the way.

This is great. Once I heard that science is "what is" and engineering is "what could be". I vividly see that they're creating something new.

In recent science periodicals I have read of several different methods for making different material rigid and then pliable. I think anyone of them would be more practical than a wax impregnated material. This system would obviously have to be housed in a temperature controlled shell, so ambient temperatures didn't affect it, not to mention the problem of load bearing capability.

LMAO! The elephant in the room! You said it, everyone was thinking it. It's not a 'good' angle for the camera. but the tech is also 'not interesting'. What happens when it get's a little warm. It just collapses on the floor? :) Also, wax is used in this way inside thermostats for most vehicles... eventually, it gets sick and tired of melting and cooling and gums up.

How would you keep external heat out? so that your robot doesn't deform when you don't want it to.

Soft robots? Of course only the women would invent that.

Towards the end: "This could be useful in situations where a robot would need to squeeze into a tight space in a person's body" Uhhh, have a squishy robot spider crawl into my anus? I think I'll just accept my cancer.

Robots are not fat, they are made as small and slim as possible. Y compare to a mouse who squishes through a hole in a wall.

Great work guys. Lots of applications on the horizon for this type of system. What is the cycle time? Or rephrased, is this a one actuation/minute system or 1/second?

So it's temperature dependent? How is it supposed to work in climates other than room temperature? Too cold and it won't flex. Too hot and it'll collapse.
@mikewilliams736
@mikewilliams736 10 лет назад
So the robot gets hard whenever it's cold. I usually have some difficulty with that myself. Very advanced.
@Duuuuuuuke
@Duuuuuuuke 10 лет назад
How sensitive it that material to temperature? I don't expect it to be useless on a really hot/ cold day but would the performance drop?

This is a fail , they would need to be deployed in controlled environments and to that end in order to reach such temperature fluctuations it would only serve as an outer skin,

CUT DOWN TREE (2) Matthew 3:10 I had to cut down 3 banana trees today. Remember when I told you that after a banana tree bears fruit it will not bear again? So banana trees only get one chance to be fruitful. These 3 banana trees hadn’t borne fruit in three years! Got me thinking of those of us who think that remaining neutral makes us immune from punishment. None of us will be ignorant of JESUS, and no, I am not incriminating you by telling you :). Be fruitful.
