Speed Academy and this plan will be the most balanced and fun to drive. I always wanted to build a car like Keiichi Tsuchiya's white Silvia S14. It's perfect!
+BenXL Haha! When you do this for a living Ben you get used to blowing engines up. Plus I look on the bright side and think of the new videos Ill be now making. :)
+Diogo DaCunha 1j's are pretty heavy, and for the power target i don't think it is viable to do a complete engine swap involving fabricating, electronics and gearbox and clutch magic. SR20's are good motors and a replacement should pop in in a day ;)
I dont understand why you would get a new sr. Send it out for combustion chamber work, mill the head flat again, then get new stock pistons if youre on a budget. But I suppose if you're pressed for time then a new engine would be the better route.
+SydneyCBR6 I agree. Also once you start having machine work done you will most likely just want to keep going. You will get more for your money because of bench fees most shops charge.
SydneyCBR6 Yeah but thats for the block. This guy needs a long block. So once he does purchase one he might break even as opposed to fixing this current SR
+Xander Cage The cost of fixing this engine is way too expensive ($1500+) versus buying a used stock one ($700) and for my application I dont need a built engine rather a stock one with a good head gasket and studs should do the trick.
this would be a great chance to make a video (or a series) about how to install an SR and what plug goes where. can't wait to see grips14 get a new heart and run again
+Kern Lee I'll be shooting a whole video series on pulling the old engine and swapping in the new one so you'll get to see a bit of the install process. If you want a guide check out our site for a full details writeup: speed.academy/nissan-240sx-sr20det-swap-guide-part-1/
So, is there a reason you couldn't replace the pistons (and I assume hone the cylinders) and have the cylinder head machined? Or would the cost of doing that be more than just replacing the entire engine? Either way, sorry for your loss. :(

Dude.. u don't need a new sr. Just grind the valves and replace the piston crown. Or upgrade to forged pistons. And new gasket.. it should be good as new. Sr20 can take a lot of torture..
damn dude i thought it would be a pain getting the water hoses off etc, but i guess they on the manifold and only a pain when taking manifold off . thats so good :D thanks for this video its amazing
Yep, I was going to start commenting about how this was going to be more than just a headgasket swap but I figure I would wait until the end. Lol. I wouldnt consider the block a paperweight though, with enough time and money it could be turned into a bored monster, the head could be ported polished and cc opened up along with bigger valves etc. but like I said. "Time and money" Its easier to go with another SR. I would also like to mention that usually the O2 sensors get screwed up when headgaskets blow. Something with the burned coolant that throws them off. So I would check on those or if your running a Bosch wideband maybe just replace it. Sweet setup though when finished. And more boost????? Lol!
+jdmcommute Good call, Ill check the AEM wideband to ensure its working properly. As for more boost. Im going to be going with less, maybe 14-15psi to ensure I have a super reliable setup.
+Grant Culham The bottom end isn't junk by any means but with the pistons being damaged it's pretty worthless, it's worth $100 or $200 bucks max since there are so many of them in this condition. I'll hold onto it and if I ever decide to build a built motor then I'll use this block.
ahh sucks to hear man! hope you get a new good motor!:) and as i read further down, 700 bucks for a used sr20?? over here in norway they're atleast 1000 bucks for a sketchy one! consider yourself very lucky hehe:)
1jz would be so awesome. i dont know why everyone suggests going 2jz. unless you plan to make more than 5-600hp whats the point of buying an engine that cost close to twice as much when the 1j can handle 500hp all day. i hope you go 1jz in the future in at least some sort of rwd car on speed academy. these videos you guys put out are of the utmost quality and you guys deserve so much more sponsor support and subscribers. cheers for bringing us all awesome content.
+That-JDM-Fascination! Thanks for the kind words. I totally agree, if I were to swap it Id go 1JZ. No need to make more than 350whp for this chassis to have fun in.
I was in a similar situation. I bought a used SR that was supposed to be fine but when I pulled the head to start to refresh the motor, I found bad damage to the cylinder wall between 1 and 2. The top 1/4" of the wall was actually broken off. Really bad. I had no come back with the seller. (no I couldn't do a compression test, the engine was on a stand) So I could either buy another used SR or I could resurrect the one I had. I sent the block off to be sleeved and have new pistons installed. That work is still being done. I also need to get the head into a shop to see if its ok. So, I don't think your SR is junk necessarily. You could buy another engine or do what I'm doing and make a bullet proof bottom end. It ended up being cheaper for me to go that route and I'll hopefully never think about the bottom end again.
+Mark Coleman Damn, that's a shitty situation. I hope the engine that I buy is in proper running order but I'll be pulling the head so I'll find out very quickly if it is or isnt.
+David Erridge It's so tempting but I found an SR for $700 bucks so it just makes sense both financially and time wise to just swap it out. If it blows again then Im swapping it forsure!
do something crazy !! swap a v8 ls1 !! price is pretty affordable and it definitely have power that you need or u can go nissan all the way with rb26 or just 2jz all the way :) awesome car project !! can't wait for next episode
+TheNiceboy360 I've already done an LS3 swap into an S13 (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mXIqjaXkhA8.html) so V8 won't be something I'll do again, not in this platform.
+SilviaDrift The crazy spike in engine temps is likely what caused it, once the head gasket failed I assume it didn't help things either. I was simply running too much power for the stock headgasket and head stud combo. The engine tune was spot on. I should actually check the logs but at this point it's a little irrelevant to me.
+Andres Moxam Damn, thats bad. I was only running 16psi so thankfully it was just the gasket and piston and head that got ruined... Wait that's still alot of parts haha.
i would get a set of je pistons and rods for it and get the head sorted maybe flow it and cc it maybe a valve spring kit and she will be strong what do you think or keep it nissan and find a rb25det dont do the 1jz or 2jz route or stick a nissan V8 like they do with fordsburgs 350z
+Matthew Dolbey It's going to cost too much to swap the pistons and rods and fix the head. Much quicker and easier for me to just grab a used working SR.
sr20 Pete! maybe bore it out to a 2.2 liter! I'm shocked that you are still running a clutch fan and not an electric setup considering how long you have owned the car.
+Kevin Parra If you go search around the forums the stock clutch fan is actually the best solution for cooling. It outperforms anything aftermarket. I have a set of SPAL fans sitting on the self but havent installed them because all the road racers recommend keeping the clutch fan.
same thing happen 2 me , i got all brand new parts for my built head and took it to the machine shop cost me around $700 for the machining but i took it to the best shop in my city that does amazing work, $2,000 into the head now im working on the built block .
+Martin 651 If you want an SR that you can beat on then there's only one way to do it and that's build one to handle the abuse so you are doing it right!
+Veselin Georgiev Exactly, hence why it just makes sense for me to find a used SR that I can swap out the gasket and not have to deal with decking and fixing this engine.
Watching this video was so painful, I hate engine tear downs. Gotten to the point with wrenching on cars that it's not even fun anymore. I like driving not wrenching. Hope to see the car running in top shape in the spring. Any ambitions of swapping in some aftermarket pistons?
+Daniel Fenton It was a bitch to teardown but on the bright side it made for a good video haha. Naa, the cost of putting pistons in and fixing the head is way more then me buying a used engine.
I agree with everyone who is saying RB swap. Keep the heart of the car in the family (Nissan with Nissan, Toyota with Toyota, etc.) So RB26DET rename it GodzillaSGrip14 and maybe a Rocket Bunny Boss V2 Bodykit.... If you guys ever need any ideas for a build my mind never stops designing vehicles. I'm a truck driver who loves cars of all kinds. It helps me stay awake on those long night drives.
+Brian Robinson Those are all great ideas Brian. I'd love to do an RB swap but right now its just not in the cards. I need to get the car running ASAP so I can start on my next project which means sticking with an SR on this one.
+Brian Robinson If you watch the video you can see the car covered up in the background. It's my BMW E39 Station Wagon that I plan on swapping a 2JZ into. That's the next immediate project!
+DisplayName I was watching it while ripping on the track and it was in the low 11s so I wasnt running lean. Besides, I have AF protection set up in the EMS. If it runs lean it will pull timing and boost.
external gate on cast manifold is tops! not many people realise the cast mani has better spool than tubular ones but also can flow a lot more than you would think (300kw)
it's a good idea to have a little bit of paranoia in regards to timing chains. but also that a bummer about your engine turning out to be junk now. i will be looking forward to seeing the next episode.
+Hayleboi Haha, thanks for the generous offer but I've already done an LS swap into a 240 and Ill be doing a 2J into my BMW so I'm sticking with the SR for now.
It was sad to see the SR blow, what really made me tear up was the music used that put it all together (previous episode), but I'm glad to know that this beautiful S14 has a very great owner, I'd trust no one else but Peter with this S14. Great job keep up the perfectionistic work that is Speed Academy! Much love from Texas.
i remove the turbo housing every time . it makes it so much better to get the turbo out and off though i have an s13 so im not sure on clearance differences from the s14 . good vid brother thanks !!!!
Detonation, yummy :P. Replace pistons, mill cylinder head, combustion chamber work, valve, throat, and seat work, high tensile rod bolts in addition to the head studs. Should make you a hit with the girls (Jeremy Clarkson).
Why not just rebuild the block you have? I mean, it didn't look like the block was all that bad, just the pistons and a lil on the head. Personally, I would just take the block to your machine shop and have them spec it out and magnaflux it to double check for cracks. Then id get the head ported and polished with new valvetrain. The P&P should take that roughness in the combustion chamber down and in turn, your head will flow much better. Just my $0.02..... Whatever you guys decide to do, please hurry! Cant wait for the next video! Makes my day when I come home from work and see a new SA vid!
+1dickycat Cost. It will easily double the cost to rebuild the engine versus go buy a stock used one. Plus the time and effort it takes to build it will mean less time for other projects that I need to start working on!
+fila1445 The cost and time aren't worth it for me. I'll buy another SR this week and hopefully get it installed soon there after. With a rebuild it would take much longer and that's time I dont have right now.
Could maybe even push an rb or a 2JZ, would be nice! Lots of useable torque/power from those too! Only problem with that could be, it gets very expensive very fast... Good Luck lads!
Stay with an SR please.I've seen so many 2jz-swapped s-chassis i'm sick and tired of it.Besides, with the way SR tuning is going,it's allegedly easy to make some decent power!
+Speed Academy good thought but just remember with a VE neo vvl engine people make 220+ NA power just imagine on boost. thanks for the reply love your channel!
Forsure go with ARP head studs.. When i went single turbo i added a 3 layer steel head gasket and that thing handles all the boost and torture i want it to. Personally i actually torque my arp studs to 90 ft-lbs even though it was recommended by arp to do 80. Personally im glad i did it the way i did.
Yeah i mean i can only speak for my experience. I personally have had good success with what i've done. Im sure there are other people who have done things completely opposite with same results. but as long as it works for you thats what matters.
+ilyafr86 I wish I had the time for it because I'd totally do that but right now I just need to get this car running so I can start on my next project so no rebuild... yet.
+TheLastTank I dont have the time or money to spend building the SR. Instead Ill just buy another used one and seal it properly with head studs and a metal gasket.
this made me think of my sr20det, im going to tune it right now do i have to change the head gasket and the bolts? im running an evo 8 turbo about 1 bar pressure. for the build i would reccomend to build this engine if the block is good and the head, buy new set of pistons and rods ,build a proper exhaust manifold throw sr20de cams and you are good to go
+Monder Phoenix It's never a bad idea but it depends what you are doing with the car (drift, track, street use). If you'll be road racing then I definitely recommend it. It can save you the headache that I'm about to go through.
If the cylinder bore is fine, and the valves seat, who cares about mark on the head and pistons? They wont cause any problems, if the head or block is not cracked. Its not beauty contest in there. Resurface the head, put a upgraded gasket on it and youre set for more boost.
+Mortalomena There was metal missing around the valves so this head requires some welding to get it back to working order. Not worth the time and effort IMO
as long as the piston seal and the rods aren't bend your bottom end is okay. you should give the top of the piston a fine polish to knock off the high spot. the same goes for the combustion chamber as long ass your valves seal. you should check for warpage . i work as an engine builder and i have build a 6 cyl 2.5L bmw race engine with about 800hp that still runs now almost a year after it was done this way and that was necessary to weld the chamber to get it to seal
+simon norup I agree, I think I could run the pistons as is if I wanted but the head has material missing around the valve so there's no way to fix it without welding, something I dont want to do.
@@speedacademy late to the game but have a similar problem. So the block /bottom is good right? I am in same position but I can’t make videos off this and I’m broke!!
