What a beautiful family! 🇱🇰

String hoppers are made from a paste with rice flour + water+ salt... passed through the holed instrument he showed, poured into the mats .. and stacked into steamer. About 20 can be made in one go. As its steamed, its a lighter meal than boiled Sri Lankan rice. String hoppers are usually eaten with gravy from one or more of sri lankan curries ( Dhal curry / potatoe curry/ chicken curry/ fish curry made with coconut milk added/ tomato curry with coconut milk added/ baby Jack fruit curry- called polos here) + coconut sambol. The meal served over there was par excellence!!! Nowadays ALL the ingredients and fuel are extremely costly its just not economical to make good meals for a few customers, given the preparation time as well... but this family was very generously wholeheartedly serving you- not as 'customers' but as they would serve their special family guests. Almost all sri lankan housewives are VERY good cooks .The local home made preparations are soo tedious even with modern gadgets as everything is done from scratch. Coconut scraping is a universal hassel 😅. Most spend a good part of the day inside the hot kitchens, and working mothers start at 4 am so kids can be out with a home made rice packet by 6am. Rice and curries is the easiest and commonest as its filling and can be done in one go for the whole family for the whole day. Nowadays most buy the strings, rotis, hoppers, kottu etc for dinner from eateries and shorteats and bread for breakfast. Traditional sri lankan ( sinhalese) breakfast included milk rice, string hoppers, hoppers, red rice, milk rice with green gram, boiled cowpea/ chickpea / green gram. Tamils have a differnt range like wadei, dosei, uppuma( from samolina) etc- Indian foods. Buffets at luxury hotels serve the whole range. Wayside eateries by paddy fields etc for local group travellers also used to serve a wide range at very good prices but most such enterprises are abandoned these days. Going on trips with big family and friends is a super luxury these days🥲.. oh the good old days 6 months ago is like a dream. This country is so manageable yet so badly managed. 😪😪😢

It is actually great that you had an experience on how Sri Lankan home cooked meals were prepared. I have never seen travel vloggers go that far to document on meal prepation in Sri Lanka.... Thumbs Up for that. Also I think the genuine humbleness of you both will take you many memorable distances on your stay here in Sri Lanka...

You have selected the correct way of exploring sri lanka. If you extend your visa, you can visit rural and tropical areas like Deniyaya, Monaragala or Balangoda.

you must eat string hoppers with kiri malu hodi ,coconut sambol,

that fragrant leaf the owner showed you is called in English as pandan leaf... it's one of the most prominent fragrance enhancers in Sri Lankan cooking.... locally it's cold as Rampa or Rampe it is the sinhalese name for the leaf!!! and about that coconut scraper you have seen it has also a really interesting backstory into it.... before that type of rotating scraper Sri Lankans only had bench type scrapers as you have seen the owner demonstrated to you it is really low and you have to sit on it to scrape.... but in 1960s I really innovative self taught engineer called "odiris" invented that rotating scraper and even now the best coconut scrapers are made by the Odiris company which was founded by him!!! (in fact the scraper you have seen also was an original Odiris coconut scraper) he has invented so many essential tools for Sri Lankan kitchens as well as restaurants and he's the first one also to invent the electric coconut scraper (Google it as Odiris electric coconut scraper) that you could scrape about hundred plus coconuts within Mere 20 or so minutes and those machines are widely used in industrial Sri Lankan kitchens.... mr Odiris passed away few years ago as a proud grandfather and his family is now running the business and I believe the company is also from down south around where you are at right now!!! and about Sri Lankan food you are really correct each and every town in Sri Lanka has somewhat a different taste and a different take to the same dishes and it's widely regarded that down south where are you at right now is quite popular for spicy authentic food.... they just dump truck loads of chili powder and stuff to their food.... it's quite typical in down south cuisine... but in Colombo it's a little bit different if not for a Down South Cook most of Colombo does not eat spices that much!!! of course spices are really tolerated in every part of Sri Lanka but in some areas in the country they just do not dump chili into their dishes and take the flavors from the other spices like curry powder and stuff like that...!! and there's a little story about Chili's as well in Sri Lanka.... chillies were brought to Sri Lanka by Portuguese traders in the 1500s before Sri Lankans only had pepper as the main spice!!! But the Portuguese ate beef as their diet and that was a new thing to Sri Lankans as Sri Lankans do not eat beef typically because of the Hindu influence the community has and cows are deemed sacred by that culture!!! and Portuguese needed Chili's to spice up their beef and Sri Lankans adopted Chili's as well and made it their own and now it's one of the most essential spices in Sri Lankan cuisine!!! we use about three forms of chili in our kitchens... namely chili powder, ground chili pieces and whole dried and fresh chilies.... if you want to make something super spicy super quick you always need to use chili powder!!! and Chili pieces and whole Chili's are more like Flavor enhancers!!! Whole chilis are mostly used in dhal Curry to get that spicy tingling in your tongue 😊😊😊 you asked about lentils and dhal... it's more like the same but you can make lentils from almost all the legumes in the world like mung beans but dhal or "parippu" in Sinhalese is a separate legume in it self and polished lentils made by dhal is also called dhal commonly in Sri Lanka and is a staple in Sri Lankan cooking!!! telling you the truth I even have had dhal Curry for breakfast!!! it's that common in Sri Lanka and there's even saying in sinhalese called "parippu nati hotale wage" that literally means like a hotel without dhal Curry, it's an expression Sri Lankans make for scenarios in life which some Key Parts of the process is missing or lost like may be a bar without liquor or a restaurant without food or a kindergarten without any children as such!!! I really hope you will stay 3 months here you have so many more things to explore in this Paradise Island!!!😍😍❤️❤️🤗🤗

The world's best spices, tea, and fruits are grown in Sri Lanka. Indian smugglers and Sri Lankan smugglers join together and mix Sri Lankan spices and tea with Indian spices and tea and export them abroad under the name of Sri Lanka because Sri Lankan materials fetch a good price from abroad.

Hey… I feel like mentioning here that there are government schools here, than private schools and they are free of charge. Most of the children go to government schools which have higher standards of teaching (most of the leading schools are government). And most of the universities are also government which also is free of charges. If you pass the exams you can get in to one for higher education freely. And the school uniforms….. government gives the materials for the uniforms to schoolers. Love from Sri Lanka ❤

curry tree, Murraya koenigii or Bergera koenigii Curry leaves are a rich source of vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin B2, calcium, and iron, apart from a heavy distinctive odor and pungent taste. It helps in the treatment of dysentery, diarrhea, diabetes, morning sickness, and nausea by adding curry leaves to your meals.

Cool thing is Sri lankan education system is free. There are semi government schools ad private schools as well. Private schools costs a bit but other 2 types of institutes doesn't charge u except for the school accessories like uniforms, books or bags etc. Government campuses are excellent too unlike whatever might have heard. difference between government campuses and private campuses are that u need to pass the A/L exams with remarkably high score to get selected to gov campuses cuz they are free of charge too. Anyone who doesen't get selected can pursuer their degrees in pvt campuses. They usually cost around 150,000 to 250,000LKR these days.
