Fun fact: you can grow almost any crop that grinds into a valuable material and cross-pollenate it with eggs. This allows the person to just pick up an egg and crack it into the beaker instead of grinding. It's so much easier. Now we wait for the ability to add genes to modify color of crops...
Possibly the most powerful syndicate role. No responsibilities so you can do what you want, free weapons (scythe and hatchet), unlimited poisons and medicine, AND dangerous mutations to "accidentally" unleash
Fun fact: This video was published the day after the Lizard server of WizDen had such a severe kudzu outbreak that the entire station was covered before 20 minutes had passed. Only time I’ve seen kudzu be the sole reason for a shuttle call.
A note about swabbing: it is a probabilistic process. The swab always grabs the properties of the last plant it has swabbed, and the carries the properties to the next swab, but it probabilistically transfers them. You have basically a 50/50 chance to transfer the chems, same for yield and other properties but they actually randomly take from a range. A good strategy is to plant a row of donor and a row of target plants, and go down the line and swab between them. This way every swab is clean and you can use one swab. Then watch them grow and pick the one with the good properties (fastest growth, proper chems). Also, egg-plants can take chems like flour and then you can just crack them in a bucket and make loads of flour!
You say botany is a chill job, but my first time trying to learn, I came across the sweatiest service worker trying to run the kitchen, botany and the bar all at once. Me and this other guy were chastised several times for trying to learn. Be carful on leviathan
One time in botany we were growing glowing apples, after awhile we had like 100 in a crate. whenever we opened the crate it was a flashbang that literally lit up all the hallways and dropped everyone's frames by 30 while causing really weird shader bugs lol.
Finally. Hopefully this will get newbies to use clippers and mutations. Weeds suck up slightly more water and severely limit growth speed. Something uncovered is that the Weed light can also indicate bad air, and further or even stop growing. I recommend growing some galaxy thistle, aloe and poppies for Chem, so they would be more willing to give out mutagen. Fruit juices can be used in a pinch if you run out of nutrition, and plants can be composted back into trays if you really need nutrition for them. I heavy advice new botanists to grind up produce to investigate what they yield, even peels can have interesting things in them.
I remember using Botany as my preferred role when I was learning the game and when introducing new players on SS13. If you're just gonna do the normal thing it's a pretty easy role with no pressure, especially if you have a more experienced player with you. On the other hand once you're more used to the game you can branch off (pun intended) in all sorts of directions. Farm increasingly useful crops, making you very popular with many different department. Be a real mad scientist and produce some of the wackiest stuff in the game including plant people. Or you could just produce a ton of drugs ranging from mildly intoxicating to almost instant death by blissful overdose. Hope SS14's Botany is like that.
i feel the drugs part in my soul, i had a shift where we worked with chem to smuggle meth into botany so we could make meth-infused bananas, which we then dumped in piles all around the station at 6u each with 50-ish per pile people were ODing everywhere, we ended up stopping after sec basically just posted up inside botany
There are a few mutations that aren't listed in places such as self harvesting. I was mutating with another one time and we made several pineapple(I think) plants that self harvested and by the end of evac there were 500 laying on the floor due to their growing time being so fast.
I've never dared myself to play botany, I mean it's simple, but if you go deeper it gets too complicated for me. This helped me understand more! Thanks lilten!
Botany is the perfect zen gameplay experience. You just do you thing, grow plants, enjoy life. Occasionally, you poison half the crew. You know, the usual.
As a real life botanist this guide helped tremendously. I was so stressed over my job but I never realized it isn't essential or important! I told my boss that I'm far too busy talking to the chef and relaxing to work on the plants and he should just order a pizza instead. Anyway, I was fired but I think that was because that traitorous syndicate was disgruntled that I knocked him out.
About weeds in hydroponics. If you add some mutagens in hydroponic with plant and weed, there is chance that you can crate kudzu. Also, if you want to crate kudzu asap, use left-4-zeat.
Yesterday i did an in depth play with botany for the first time by following the russian guide on steam( i used google translate) and i managed to crosspollinate a nettle with a fly amanita and made a 2 hit to crit nettle that deals heat and amatoxin poison damage, some steam guides in russian are great, they also have some paper work examples on their wiki, and i love to do forms (used to do them all the time in ss13,cant wait someone adds fill in option on forms and logos formatting) , btw great video!
@@karev9945 they are in the guide section of the steam page of the game, lemme grab the link tho i suggest you open it in browser so you can copy and paste it in google translate.
botany regular here (Kadeo Ketoni) swabbing is weird, I recommend using at least 3 swabs on a plant (swabbing once then getting a new swab), as this guarantees a cross pollenation from my experience. Also, remember to cross cocoa onto gatfruits for fast growing and 6 yield.
@@shadowcz9872 Salvage has a VERY rare chance to find them on salvage expeditions I think. They are still considered contraband so don't plant them in a tray near a window or something.
this mutation thing is interresting, it did make complete sense on how you explained its just up to trail and error to get to desired result from your batch of crops and combine swaps with other favorable crops in order to get even more insane yields and results. Thnx for the explanation.
oh yeah i ones got murdered in SS13 on goonstation for using too much salpeter solution, being alone and having all the trays and nutrients for yourself makes for the best shifts.
you're not wrong, botanists really need their own niche with at least 3 trays to be able to _play_ botany properly and have fun, but good luck with that
yea. i havn't had one botany shift with another botanist, that didn't end in frustration. i'm always like :" i take these trays, you the others" first they agree and the second you come back from chem, they used your trays too for some mutation and entered the zone. it's a job that is much much more fun when you are alone.
I actually watch all your videos because I want to have some great experience on all roles in ss14 leviathan server. They are great though, keep up the good work man
Actually, there is ONE thing that CAN happen when you use unstable mutagen carelessly and that botany can accidently mutate weeds, causing Kidzus to grow. Kidzu, for those not aware, are wild vines that can damage players over time because of their thorns. This is really, REALLY bad! Depending on the servers, they can be the least threatening thing on the station or the WORSE. If left unchecked, it can take over the station and delay work for EVERYONE. I had shifts end so quickly because of how bad kidzus get out of control. So if the heads denies the use of unstable mutagen, this is why. The best thing to do is to seal up the kidzu until it's stops growing, then trim/burn them down. Wield the doors shut, check the mants, make sure it doesn't spread. For antags, this is the best way to cause a distraction, but even they are not safe from the wrath of kidzus.
@@shadowcz9872water + potassium = kaboom , tho strangely it doesn't work, i crosspollinated a banana tree with pineapple to make a banana that tastes like pineapple but managed to transfer only the water, luckily it didnt go boom.
I kinda don't like swab will also have chance to override the cham of the plant that get swabed, i would like it to just make a crossbreed version that have both cham inside of it.
It differs depending on the server. If you pick the role at start, you should spawn in Botany, again depending on the server. If you spawn somewhere else, ask for directions or look at the specific server wiki. If there isn't a specific server wiki, that's a red flag.
It'd be cool to organise your videos in the playlist so that the difficulty increases. It's sad that you didn't mention the seed extractor in a basic gameplay loop, - plant the seed (or fruit) - water it - watch it grow - harvest - replant (if necessary) - save a fruit/seed in the seed extractor to see the stat evolution - pick up with the plant bag - place in the fridge or on the table. - start again.
@@Liltenhead Yes, you mentioned it quickly, but you didn't explain what the seed machine does (or the dna viewer). but since it's a basic beginner role recommended for learning to play, and you're one of the best references on ss14, encouraging the learning of a complete gameplay loop would be interesting.
I'm thinking about it now. It would be interesting if kudzu could also mutate on its own or in contact with certain liquids. That would be a real problem then.
Guide to methnanas [chem not needed] Step one: plant ambrosisus vulgaris and banana Step two: swab ambrosius onto banana (throw away swab and do it like 3 more times with new swabs) Step three: add 15u robust harvest Boom, methnana. Remember to tell people to only eat one, or they will Overdose and take poison damage.
