How can you login to a remote machine to update it or do maintenance? How can you exchange data between two machines securely? In this video, I'm going to briefly discuss SSH and some related tools.

Pro tip! On almost all terminal you can hit "ctrl + l" to clear the terminal (that's a lowercase L)

Great tutorial DT, been ages since I used ssh... heck, been ages since I had anything to ssh into! :-) I don't know if urxvt supports it, but on most terminals you can press CTRL+u to delete a line you typed, and CTRL+w to delete a word. Saves having to hold the backspace key down to wipe something you've entered or want to change. With as much as you work on the command line, thought it might be helpful to mention it.

Great video but have a look to unison to synchronize two Pc via ssh... Using unison between a laptop and a tower pc is really great... The same env and files between the two computers.

SSH isn't something I've played around with before, something I should really start rectifying, especially with using FileZilla to transfer files between computers (useful for new installs); didn't know I could do that before. Ta DT!

12:16 I tried FileZilla, but the font size was much too small. I read something like that this is because of the main font size, but if that's the cause, then why don't I have the same problem in other programs?

Web servers was how I first learned about ssh/scp as well. It was only later that I thought, hey, with ssh I can update the machine in the other room without having to get my lazy arse up out of this chair. :D

You really shouldn't set the same hostname on more than one system. Come up with something different and maybe more descriptive than "dt-pc"! For example, if those two machines are the only ones with Manjaro and Arco on them, then you can name them "manjaro" and "arco". Or if you want, you can name them after their physical locations, like "desktop" and "laptop". You can even come up with some codenames if you want. The important thing is to make sure you have unique and meaningful names for every system on the network.

The video editor I use is Kdenlive. For audio editing, I use Audacity. I record these videos with Open Broadcaster Software (OBS). I do all the artwork with Gimp.

Nautilus the default file browser has the feature of mounting remote files u could also use samba filezilla or use some of the commands he showed if u like :)

Used Nitroshare for some time, it's great indeed. After a while itgave me some trouble, don't no why, maybe I messed it up myself.Dukto is another great alternative! Runs on almost every thinkable platform!www.msec.it/blog/?page_id=11

nice tutorial dt. you know you can sftp with thunar/pcmanfm also?just type in the adressfield sftp://dt@(ipadress). now you can copy anything :)save it as a bookmark for later.

im going to try ssh it at some point, do i need it? nope, all 4 of my pc's are literally within arms reach but im lazy and i like this idea lol!!!! do i need server installed on the machine i want to SSH into or does linux come with the server installed ? (currently using linux mint 19)

Not sure if both openssh-client and openssh-server is installed on Mint 19. If not, just install them. The machine you want to ssh into needs to have the ssh daemon running: sudo systemctl start sshd.service

Do you have to install it on every machine you're wanting to SSH into, including the 'host' machine?

@OA You need to install the server only (openssh-server under Debian) In general the ssh client is installed by default on most Linux distributions.

@Toran Each machine can be server and client at the same time. So for each machine you'd like to ssh into that machine needs to be a ssh server! Cheers

great video dt but about ssh u could ude the hostname as in user@hostname instead of IP , but IP is more reliable

@C Only if it is a static IP address. Otherwise you need to check if the IP hasn't changed because of a new DHCP lease! Cheers

you can use sth like noip or so and configure your router to automatically update if your ip changes. That way you can have a nice hostname and (with some port forwarding) even access your machine from everywhere you want

The hostname can come from your SSH config, so you can map it to an IP address there if you want. It can also specify a nonstandard port, plus port forwarding etc.

my main downfall is i dont have a clue how to use the command i have tried many times and have failed every time mind you at my age which is 70 years old can i still understand the command use

From someone that's almost as old, yes definitely. I'm learning things now. I plan to be using a computer for a while longer, so need to learn to use it better.
