The annual Bugle Contest, unique in the brass band calendar.
First we see the St Dennis Youth Band on the morning march to the contest field followed by the senior band on their morning march playing, traditionally, March of the Heralds, the performance of the march for the contest, Paul Drury's Jubilee, the final stages of the test piece - Isaia 40 by Robert Redhead and then, following victory on both pieces, their march back up Fore Street for the special 'Lap of Honour' outside The Bugle Inn in front of a large crowd whilst the traffic on the A391 waits patiently!
The crowd is treated to the band performing, under the baton of Darren Hawken, the Cornish hymn tune Salutation by Polmear, a reprise of march Jubilee, and, following tradition, a rendition of Handel Parker's hymn tune Deep Harmony brings things to a close after a great day's banding, even if the weather was challenging at times, but that's Bugle!!

Hello Jasmin, it's a Cornish hymn tune called Salutation.

I notice that the soprano cornet of Denis band is playing from a closed book- what is he trying to prove? It looks most odd. Also the piece by Colonel Robert Redhead is "ISAIAH 40 in the Old Testament of the Bible. "comfort ye my people".

To be honest Brian, the Soprano Cornet player, Andrew Julian, is a long term holder of the seat within the band having been a product of the band's Junior Band. As this march is something of a 'signature march' for the band, I suspect Andrew, and probably 50% of the band, is would be quite comfortable playing without music knowing it by heart, allowing him a certain amount of freedom but certainly not trying to prove anything, why would he need too - a first class player???!!! Colonel Robert Redhead is a composer from a Salvation Army background, however, this piece was written for the National Championships of Great Britain at the Royal Albert Hall in October 1996.

Hi Brian . As a soprano cornet player myself I play quite a few pieces without music as it gives you more awareness of what is going on around you rather than staring at a piece for no reason . I don't think the soprano player was trying to prove anything at all , it was just his way of doing it , and in my opinion he did a fantastic job . Kind regards , Mark .

@@Mark64W I agree he is an excellent player but if all the players are required to use music copies why be the odd on e out>. It ruins the band's deportment.

Hi Brian. In answer to your query, it's just down to my own personal preference. I find it much easier to march if I can memorise the music. That particular march I have been playing at St Dennis since my early teens (over 20 years ago). The red hymn book was not actually in use that evening, other than to bulk out the other music in my lyre in order to avoid a spray of sheet music in the road owing to a weak lyre spring. So no it wasn't a case of me proving anything, just trying to make my own life easier :-) We have missed competing at WEBF Bugle due to the pandemic, but I certainly hope we will all be returning to Molinnis in 2022. We are thankful to the likes of Herbie's Trains & Bands for capturing these memories so well. Take care. AJ

@@andrewjulian5593 Think that clears that up & thanks for your comments. Whilst I've only made it four times, I find it's one of those 'you have to do once' events, and if you do it once.......... you need to go back and do it again!!!

What is the tittle of this march?
@herbiestrainsbands346
@herbiestrainsbands346 5 лет назад
The road march is March of the Heralds by Nichol and the 'lap of honour' march is Jubilee by Drury.
