Old 16mm cine film of the protest about the harbour wall in St Ives Cornwall which the Council went on to make too uncomfortable for youths (Beatniks) to lie on.
It was also known as Beatnik wall, think it's from 1963/4.
If you enjoy looking at old cine films, please subscribe to my channel as I have a large collection of films that I am working through and I try to upload at least two new films a week of clips that I think could be of interest to other people.

This is wonderful footage! I have some information from research I've been doing on 'Beats' in Cornwall during the 1960s - the protest on the harbour wall took place on 26th October 1963, after the Council had decided to 'ridge' the top of it to prevent 'beatniks' from sitting or lying on it. In the end the decision was made to reduce the height of the wall, with the work being carried out in April 1964. Apparently the wall itself dates from World War II, when it was put up as part of the town's defences.

Thank you for posting this - as a result I researched it and found that in 2011 the local council refused a request to commemorate the incident with a plaque. My sympathies are entirely with the so called beatniks, who all seemed very respectable indeed.

+Neil Harris Thanks for the comment, you may have already seen this but I got a lot of information about the wall from this page on roots web: archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/CORNISH/2003-11/1068579182

The net result of all this expensive destruction was that the 'Beatniks and undesirables' migrated to the bandstand - also on the front...

@@alanjones6359 yes sadly that was the mentality back in the day, we had two reunions in 2010 and 2011 the mayors of St Ives attended both. I remember hiding in the shallows of the sea on Porthminster beach behind a rock in the middle of the night as the security force, the K9s came onto the beach chasing hippies with their dogs, we were only kids.
