My father, John Ganner, was in the RAF for his national service and was sent to St Kilda in 1957 in what was known as 'Operation Hard Rock', the objective was to build the jetty, huts, and a road to the summit in order to set up a missile early-warning system. He was there for 2 years and always told stories of how amazing the island was. One thing he did that he shouldn't have done was to come back with a souvenir he found hidden in a dry-stone wall in the village - an old brass flare pistol, which sat on the mantlepiece for decades. I inherited this, and have been in touch with the NTS in order to arrange its return to the island. When my dad passes, he is in an Alzheimer's home, I will go to St Kilda with his ashes to the island he loved, and return what he took all those years ago.

Why don't they renovate a couple more of the cottages and rent them out as holiday lets

I read the book 'The life and Death of St Kilda'. It was the arrival of the Church and Vicar that started the downfall of St Kilda.

The irony. Paradise lost by another fear monger and do-gooder. 😂

@@stephenobrien7660 Where is the fear mongering? I just commented on what has already happened. Why does this make me a do-gooder?

Disagree, it was the people being exposed to modern life telling their families they can have better materialistic things elsewhere easier. Nothing to do with the church

@@robinhazell6019 Think he means the vicar.

There are age/health limits to visiting the Island, she did not mention it!
@henryfitch8710

What are these restrictions? My 94 year old dad is keen to visit this place and as his son I would be his companion on any possible trip. Henry of England.
@destinationunknown4959
@destinationunknown4959 Год назад
@henryfitch8710 from my search to book a private boat to the island ( there is not an offical ferry to it) all of the ones I viewed limit the age to max 65 year olds and able bodied as their boats are speed boats and the terrain is slippy on the jetty when you get there, there are no facilities just wild camping.

@@destinationunknown4959 Why would she mention the rules and requirements of private companies that aren't connected to the National Trust?
@destinationunknown4959
@destinationunknown4959 Год назад
@yokaicustoms because she is making the place out to be inviting and the poor viewers think they can easily get there to their ancestral home or a nice location when there is no Public or national trust ferries to it. It seems misleading to me.

If I hadn't done Scottish gaelic I never would have known about St Kilda!

A bit unwelcoming really. Is the island open to visitors as it certainly doesn't appear they want them.
