Radio Broadcast of Ella Fitzgerald and Chick Webb from the Savoy Ballroom, Harlem, NY. I beleive this recording to be from early 1939 before the decline in Chick Webbs health. Arguably one of Ella and Chick's finest works. Enjoy.
The Savoy Ballroom. My mother always told us about the times she was in there to dance and dance they did. For a young lady from SC, this was pure heaven. Who knows, Chick and Ella may still be packing the Savoy and momma may still be dancing with joy.
Brilliant... this music is so full of rhythm and swing... it's exciting, dancing, foot tapping ... a superb performance... and a radio recording too... thank goodness it was not lost... cracking music
A recording from the latter half of 1939 or early 1940, after Chick had died. Ella took over the band and led it, billing was Ella FitzGerald with the Chick Webb Orchestra. Evidence? She doesn't mention his name among those of other musicians which would never have happened were Chick there, and the announcer announces it as Ella FitzGerald and the Chick Webb Orchestra. She kept the band together through most of the war, & had a number of hits including A Tisket a Tasket, 5 O'Clock Whistle
Terrible that he died so young - he was only 30 - what a magnificent talent he was - he could swing like nobody's business - I can't help but wonder what He & Ella could have accomplished together had he lived. As it is, his legacy is enormous - what great music!!!
He died at age 34 - Pott’s disease or tuberculosis of the spine, leaving him with a short stature and badly deformed spine causing him to appear hunchbacked.
Chick webb was the man, too bad he died so young, though. His amazing music lives on and on. The Great Ella sure did enhance the orchestra. today's music can't hold a candle to these legends.
It really was Chick who you might say discovered Ella, or at least gave her her first opportunities. I love that fact the great bandleaders, like Webb, can spot talent so early and showcase it. Webb's been called the grandfather of many drummers and rightly so. So many later players, who's names are more recognized (Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson for example) credit Webb as there major influencer. Driving, just Driving on the drums. Rest in Peace Chick Webb.
I LOVE this sensational video of a very young Ella Fitzgerald when she was singing with the Chick Webb Band at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem in the late1930s. (I,also, love the beautiful photographs of her in this video.) This one really swings!!! DMM

This is Chick Webb' orchestra lead by Ella Fitzgerald but this is not Chick on drums but Bill Beason ! Chick Webb dead on june 16, 1939 ! This has been recorded after his death...but this is yet a good version of St Louis blues even if Bill Beason wasn't as great as Chick was...
@@billybarty2948 He is right though. If Chick was alive the announcer at the end would have mentioned him but he didn't. Also it's a fact that Ella fronted the band after Chick's death so everybody would have a job. Learn to be nice. In other words behave to someone like they're standing close enough to put you on your ass if you act disrepectful.
Check out The sound track for the movie Kansas City with Victor Lewis on Drums and Other Greats!!Higgins and Herbie and I think Dexter had actor parts in the Movie aswell!!
😀👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💖oooo HEART 💖MY SOUL IS IN TH TUNE 😀 WELL ...if we didn't have these politicians..and our World finally comes to peace and evenness..what else would we be doing..but SING & DANCE? ONE DAY MY FRIENDS..ONE DAY 💖💪🏼
This music makes me smiling ,how people of that time did not wait to engoy good music you can feel the atmosphere ,it was just great ,thank you for the video bro.
A thrilling live performance from the Savoy Ballroom! Unfortunately the great Chick Webb had gone beyond when this was recorded. In the outro the announcer says "Ella Fitzgerald who presented her orchestra", not Chick Webb's.
Check Ken Burns' series on Jazz. As I recall there is a very short and indistinct clip of him. A shame given that he lived such a short time, but it's the same with guitar player Django Reinhardt, about 12 to 15 seconds
Turn of the decades to the 40's WPA, the rebuilding of the states and onto Swing; it was on its way in. Big Band Swing! Big, new American Dream of the 1940s!
Chick Webb was the king of swing. I would like to take his position as the greatest of all time. As of now i can play all he played. does that make me the greatest ever?
I appreciate the photos of the dancers -- looks like they were doing the Lindy Hop. Those young folks had energy to let, No one will ever dance like that again, not at a club dance, anyway. People are too afraid of sweating these days.
Ella showed some talent then, but her voice here sounds very much a voice from that era. It hadn't matured into the wonderful, ageless instrument that it later became.
This was recorded AFTER Chick had passed...how am i so sure? Well it doesn't sound like Chick, the Band is too well recorded, ive never this before and the annoucer states clearly that this is Ella's Orchestra so with all that in mind the drummer is Bill Beason..thank you.
Music was good until disco came along. Then record companies realized that they just needed a beat and some crap on top of it and people would buy it. that was the beginning of the end. That's where we are today, poor quality, lacks imagination, churned out in mass production. Sadly, not many young people realize what junk they are listening to. Luckily, my 4 kids have raided my CD collection and know what good music is. My 17 year old daughter wants me to will her my collection when I die.
@@SteveCournane He replaced Webb when Chick passed away and continued on as Ella's drummer when she took over the band. He was an excellent drummer who played in many of the great Harlem big bands like Teddy Hill and later on with Sy Oliver's Orchestra.
