My father grew up in north St Louis in the 1920 when these neighborhoods were filled with working class European immigrants; Irish; Welch,German etc., looking for a better life.
I left St. Louis over 7 years ago. Probably never go back, but even though the Northside has lots of crime, they also have better community cohesion compared to suburbs where neighbors never talk. Love seeing the dice games, party balloons, and old cats hanging out on the stoop!
Charlie, thanks for bringing back memories of Hyde Park area. The odor of Krey Packing Company on a hot July morning - The White Castle in the hood - The sight of a brand new fighter jet at the west ramp Lambert - my girls perfume. Ahhh
It looks as bad as detroit in spots but they're both similar looking. Once nice homes and buildings mostly brick. Seems like midwestern hoods have that old town run down urban decay look. I live in Indy and it's like that but not this extreme
The song "The Ghetto" by the late great Donny Hathaway (sampled by Too Short & others) was about/inspired by St. Louis. A reflection of American decline...and the devastating impact of white flight (divestment of capital).
An example of white flight is Cairo, Illinois at the far southern tip of Illinois. It's a food desert. There isn't even a gas station to my knowledge there. Thankfully, the state of Illinois is investing in the community by creating a shipping port. I think the total project is around $40 million, but like anything with government, it's slow.
Thanks for the share Charlie. Have you ever had the St. Louis style pizza and ravioli? They have custard like ice cream down there and are known for pretzels. I never been but researched some of the cuisine.
MANNNNNN!! I was just thinking about moving back to the Lou was kinda home sick thanks for showing me the video left in 2007 and things look even worst!!
Once again, Charlie, thanks so much for taking us on this fascinating trip!! East St Louis - cripes, I was floored to learn this is in Illinois!! Is there a WEST St Louis in Illinois?? 🤔😉 It's such as shame to see those elegant historical brick dwellings and buildings in deterioration. Incredible, breathtaking architecture all gone to seed. 😢😢😢😢
St. Louis, Missouri is a major city. It's on the west side of the Mississippi River, in Missouri. This is the North side of St. Louis, MO. East St. Louis is across the river in Illinois. There's a bunch of smaller towns surrounding ESTL on that side of the river. It's known as "Metro East" locally. Same thing that happened to Detroit happened here. It used to be a major industrial city, then a lot of places closed down. Jobs dried up, and people that could leave either left for the suburbs or to somewhere else entirely (white flight and black flight). Couple that with poor management, lack of funding, and the drug epidemics (Heroin, Crack, gangs)... And here we are.
there are still tons of areas in STL that have the same architecture and it's well maintained....South City (south STL) and West St. Louis/Forest Park area.
Great video Charliebo313, I guess downtown St.Louis looks more city like BUT according to your videos the hoods in St.Louis looks just like many small city hoods, they are spread out....it reminds me of the hoods in Louisville Kentucky....on the other hand places like Oakland California, Baltimore Md, Philadelphia Pa & some other hoods are very urban like, they are packed close together, alot of trash & alot of graffiti.
Dope. Thanks for coming to the lou. I’m hoping you got a west side video too, but if not maybe next time. Much luv to Charlie Bo and all of STL city and counties
The city government, the alderman of certain areas of the city didn't give a damn and instead of investment of businesses, trade schools and recreation centers. You have liquor stores on every other block, and abandoned houses. Crime was sure to follow.
@@devjones1 It was more complicated than that. Changes on the law on the federal level during the Regan Admin had a lot to do with the decline. Corporate deregulation allowed formally prohibited merger & acquisitions to take place killing off a lot of businesses that consolidated & moved HQs to the coasts with the rise of globalization. The Tax Reform Act of 86 killed off real estate investment partnerships that were doing residential & commercial rehab on both the north & south sides of the city. I saw these partnerships dissolve brfore my eyers after the tax credits & passive activity loss limitations were scaled back A lone, well-meaning alderperson could at best only marginally mitigate the changes that fedgov put into play. www.stltoday.com/business/local/what-derailed-growth-in-st-louis/article_d2c39676-33e9-5999-930b-ca4fdef09bee.html
Wow that's my old neighborhood & feel like riding back to my mom's house on college street from the grayhound station. Be careful up there. My lil brother say it got crazy since I left in 2012
I lived off Vernon Ave between Kingshighway Blvd and Union Blvd for a few years. Lived in the south side on Arsenal St down from Anheuser Busch beer plant. The process of breaking down the beer hops stank something terrible.
You seen the movie The Shining? The Intro? Going-to-the-Sun Road, running along the western shore of Saint Mary Lake in Glacier National Park, northeast of Kalispell, Montana.
Enjoyed watching been watching you long time I Missed these St Louis Mo ones I was born and here never leave you was in true Ghetto use be Beautiful Now Drugs Took Over
I wonder, why they don't plant any vegetables by their houses to get something to eat? Is it prohibited to make some gardening by the house to make ends meet, just get some veggies grown, picked and eaten?
At the very beginning Charlie rides thru the Brem. Right before approaching Grove St, Glasgow and the Dub. At twenty second mark Charlie rides down North Florissant at the section of hood legend Ray The King. Predominantly Crip area of North St. Louis.
It would be nice if you could narrate where are you are and what you see while you are driving through the city. Just a thought. If not, maybe just some background music. Thanks.
As someone from England and quite a nice area which 99% white , We have such a fake look on how life is in USA from films etc they never show people areas like this. It’s almost like a third world country in the Middle East .. considering USA is the so called richest country in the world , these streets are horrendous
It looks rough and is rough. The people seem real serious too they don't play. It's reminds me of a regular midwestern city like Detroit or Cleveland but slightly southern too.
SOMEONE please help me understand...WHY, no matter what hood you goto everyone has to hang out in the middle of the streets either day or night ?? Does no one have back yards, front yards, anything? I seriously dont get hanging out in the middle of streets.
They have super small front yards, usually with a slope and stairs. The road is flat. Back yards might be as small as the front yards. And who would know you were having a hang out and all were invited if you were in the back? Gotta be in the front- come along and join in! The question is : why did he "have" to drive thru the party? He could have backed up because that looked like a block party that he crashed. And block parties happen on the South side of STL. We park our cars across the streets ( someone might get a permit for closing the street, I guess) and do the same as this group. Eat, drink and be merry.
This just breaks my heart to see my city like this. I always said that if I won the lottery, I would have demolition company tear down all the burned out, boarded up and abandoned buildings in the city. How is a mother to raise a child in an area like that?
that wont help us. rebuild our homes or help us repair them. help our ever growing homeless population. white knighting is not needed here, what st louis needs is love, assistance and cleansing. not destroying our neighborhoods so the upper class kids from west county can move in
Lol! The buildings are pretty much rock solid. Only ones falling down brick wise are the ones that have purposely been “toppled” by bored kids. If one could rehab 4-5 square blocks at ONE TIME, it has a chance to make a difference. One at a time rehabbing houses get stripped before they can get 1/2 done.
you're right every state in US should look like beverly hills... you sound dumb.. every country has rundown poor areas that are WAAY worse than ours and way more of them.
I live half.my life in Philadelphia and half in Brooklyn, one thing I noticed different from the cities I'm from, most of these places do not have no bodega or corners stores at all, where people go to get loosies snacks beer etc???? No laundromat pawn shop McDonald's what what have you
BJ's not in the right parts a lot of stuff are closed down for every neighborhood got corner stores and gas stations everywhere is nothing like the we got plenty of stores and gas stations just not in this video This Ain't Nothing But 10% of st. Louis
@@flipnotrab There damn there aren't any traffic lights too. There all broken with missing plastic, some not even facing the correct direction they need to be facing. Some intersections just have left over old ones that's just sitting there not working. So your right about them being turned off too. Lol.
🙌🙌🙌🙌!! ~ Yes its Dangerous ~ But What Suburb in Any Country doesnt have this!!?? ~ We Love the Documentation of these scenarios in an Ever-Changing World!! ~ Cheers to Charlie!!🙌🙌
I'm originally from St Louis / South City and Cahokia Illinois i always move away from St Louis but I always come back . I am back in St Louis well not the city because you know why. I moved to Creve Coeur in the County it's safe & clean out here. Washington DC vermin always gives trillions and trillions and trillions of dollars to our enemies all over the world 🌎 . I really enjoy driving through East St Louis Illinois because it's so much fun it's because i am an adrenaline junkie. Dexter Lombardo out 🤠 Thanks you for the St Louis hood tour
somebody should try to buy up the blocks. when there is a lot of abandoned buildings there is no growth. look like some rebuilding and rebranding need to happen because this community is hurting. I mean where do the children play? sad really.
There have been a few groups that have tried. Problem is (was with last BIG attempt) people start “demanding” ridiculous prices for their property when they find out someone is “buying up” blocks. I totally get heritage by some of these peoples houses that have taken great care & pride in them, but the burned out ones who want 100/125k and haven’t been habitable in decades? They are the problem. City is too chicken to eminent domain them for the greater good of community. Sucks. Lots of GREAT buildings/homes there. Easy to heat & cool too because they are all solid 14”-18” brick & concrete.
How does a city end up with areas like this ? Should've cities be investing more in say, parks and recreational facilities, and perhaps community policing efforts. I think cops should live no further than 20mins from where they work, otherwise they're not really part of the community and don't have a personal, vested, inherent interest in seeing that area improve.
At first I thought this was a white person making this video… until you pulled up over on the dub and started turning corners in ally and dead end street over there … I use to live over there off Penrose and Blair by the water towers . That is seriously the hood , I knew then nah this ain’t no white dude over there riding around filming shit like that…. But appreciate the video bruh.👍
Yeah I searched this location and found this video because I watching something else where a cop was warning people not to go there and that he wouldn't even go there heavily armed with others cops as backup.
