I was put on mood altering meds decades ago and meds for sleep due to severe insomnia. I don't want to be on any of these drugs! I have gone from 20 mg of Lexapro to 2mg. Soon I'll be off entirely! I need prayer to beat my reliance on sleep meds which are permanently damaging my memory. Please pray for me to St. Mark Xi 🙏✝️🌹

ive been asking for St Mark Ji's intercession ever since i found out about him last year, as well as going to Liturgy on Sunday and participating in my parish as much as possible, making myself open to God's graces and the prayers of our Lady. Today is 30 days free from opiates. Ive been on some form or another of opiates for 16 years. Freedom is possible friends. Do not lose hope, do not lose faith.

St Mark Ji - A martyr and saint who suffered a terrible addiction. I don't understand why he is referred in this narrative as a sinner? He had an addiction - and he was a good man, a doctor who helped the poor, suffered severe pain, took opium (and became addicted, the effects of opium were not understood in his day). He clearly loved God and wanted to practice his faith. In many cases we don't know what circumstances lead to addiction, just that it has terrible consequences for those who are addicted and their families. The Venerable Matt Talbot, an Irishman is considered the patron of men and women with alcoholism, God's grace works through such people to help others. Please pray for those who suffer from the curse of addiction, whatever form it takes - including the rise of eating disorders in young people.

And as a opiate addict myself I can say that any opiate whether it be heroin, pain killers like Percocet or nowadays fentanyl, there is a physical dependence which makes you violently sick when you don’t take it. It is the worse sickness I have ever experienced in my life. I had pneumonia as a child for about week to the point of hallucination and very high fever and I would prefer that sickness without hesitation compared the sickness of opiate withdrawal. It’s a type of hell on earth that no human should ever experience.

Great retelling of his story; however based on the catechism what he was engaging in was unlikely to be mortal sin because the drugs restricted his free will. I strongly disagree with your conclusion. The church was wrong on how it dealt with these matters but because God is not bounded by the poor instruction of an ignorant priest restricted to the knowledge of his time God saved him. It is an incredible story of Saint Mark's loyalty and obedience to the church despite the fact that the church was wrong about him. And yes I said 3 Hail Marys for the priest. God bless you sir.

Was it right for the confessor to deny him reconciliation? I’ve heard others point out that this was wrong of the confessor to do that.

The confessor shouldn’t have denied him reconciliation if he knew that Saint Mark was trying to fight it. So should all the drug addicted, and all those addicted to pornography stop going to confession?
