This is Selmar Bagge's piano transcription of the opening chorus of St Matthew Passion, one of the most difficult pieces in my repertoire. If I could only use one word to describe the opening chorus, it would be "awe."
In loving memory of my math teacher, Chun Ping Liu, whom I would describe with the same word.
St Matthew Passion, BWV 244 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
1. Kommt, ihr Töchter, helft mir klagen - O Lamm Gottes unschuldig
Arr.: Selmar Bagge (1823-1896)
Piano: Ruoshi Sun (2022) on CLP-785

One of the most emotional pieces written by Bach, impossible to listen without tears
@lauterunvollkommenheit4344
@lauterunvollkommenheit4344 10 месяцев назад
The piece starts with 41 E's in the base. Bach's little inside joke: 41 is the sum of the numeric values of the letters JSBACH (9+18+2+1+3+8).
@obonyxiam
@obonyxiam 5 месяцев назад
J is the 10th letter and S is the 19th, so the sum should be 43, no?
@lauterunvollkommenheit4344
@lauterunvollkommenheit4344 5 месяцев назад
@@obonyxiam J is not part of the Latin alphabet. The Romans used the letter I for the sound J as well. That's why J has the same number as I.

Awe! Absolutely right! Beethoven was right to call Bach "The immortal god of harmony". This may be my favourite video from your channel so far... and you already had set the bar extremely high. Hats off to you.

Thank you! I'm practicing a few pieces much more difficult than this one, but I don't know when I'll be ready. It can take many more months or years. Or maybe they'll never come to fruition. But even then, I would then be able to play "easier" pieces that I had not been able to. An example is the 3rd movement "Precipitato" from Prokofiev's Sonata No. 7. I don't have high accuracy, especially for the last section where block chords are flying all over the place, but it made the left hand leaps in this piece (the current video) a lot easier for me. (And, no, Precipitato is not one of the pieces I'm talking about at the beginning. I'll again keep it as a surprise.)

This is probably the best version of this on RU-vid - thanks for making it! I've caught the Bach bug and wanted to learn Bagge's piano arrangement of BWV 244.

Very nice transcription of one of the most iconic pieces ever composed (in my eyes..). This and 'Erbarme Dich' are emotionally important pieces for me too. Thank you for your amazing performance of both this piece and 'Erbarme dich'! They are going to be my next challenge..

Dude! Your piano playing is soo good that it motivates me to practice this masterpiece. Also, your video led me to the real GOLD (a.k.a music sheet for piano on St. Matthew Passion) hidden in these vast internet world! I searched for it for months and I think you're the only one played this on piano, so far. (I listened to various versions of St. Matthew Passion almost EVERYDAY) THANK YOU SOOO MUCH! 1 Subs for you!

I first learned this piece a few years ago. It took many weeks of practice. Only recently did I manage to get the accuracy high enough. I am just an amateur, so I'm sure many people out there can play this piece, if they are willing to practice it. The counterpoint and prevalence of tenths/leaps are the major technical challenges in my opinion. Thank you for subscribing! I have quite some unique content that you won't find elsewhere. Enjoy! :)

@@RuoshiSun I'm an amateur too. I quit piano lessons a long time ago (due to a school exam. So I didn't really want to quit). But, I still love the piano and play it often. I hated Baroque pieces when I took piano lessons (they introduced me to boring pieces) but Bach's Matthew Passion changed my mind. I love his chord progressions. You say "many people out there can play this piece". Yes, but most I found on RU-vid was someone played this on organ, or on piano as singer's accompaniment, 4 handed arrangements. I haven't found anyone else who made a recording of the "Opening Chorus" part on a solo piano so far (It's soo rare. Most people play the "Erbarmme dich" part on piano without transcriptions) I almost gave up the dream of playing Matthew's Passion arias and this piece on the piano until I found you uploaded your video playing this piece PLUS wrote down the music sheet link in the description which is really helpful for me :D THIS is the content I won't find elsewhere too! Thank you so much! I dreamed to play this part's intro in church service haha

Oh no. I wasn't expecting to actually find a transcription and performance this good when I searched for this. Didn't think it was possible for one human to do this piece justice on any instrument but yours actually works. Well, I have no choice now, time to spend countless hours trying to learn how to play this I guess. Might as well favorite because I get the feeling I'll be returning here a lot just to see how the hell you do it. If anyone wants to help me on this long journey, leave a reply and tell me I'm worthless trash who'll never be able to do it because I'm not cool enough. That way if all else fails I'll still have spite to fuel me.

Thank you for your kind words! I'm sure you can do it with enough willpower. I want to encourage you from a positive angle: I started learning the piano at the age of 13 and never stood out among my peers. The only difference is that I kept practicing for several decades (not this piece) while most of them, including some of the most talented ones, gave up. It is literally the tortoise and the hare. Now that I have transcribed and played the opening movements of the Mass in B minor and St John Passion as well (you can find both in my channel), this piece is actually the most approachable among the three. The biggest challenge here is the abundance of 10ths, where you're not just playing a chord but counterpoint. If you cannot play 10ths comfortably, it may be very difficult to produce smooth lines. You may try to experiment with octave transpositions or dropping one of the extremities altogether as a compromise.
