Barracks Square Estate Synopsis
Following the success of the documentary film Fortune’s Wheel 1915 (about the life and legacy of the Fairview lion tamer), director Joe Lee focuses on another Dublin neighbourhood - Inchicore. This feature-length documentary tells an extraordinary story of ordinary life as lived over 200 years in Richmond Barracks, Keogh Square and St Michael’s Estate. Located a little over 3 miles South West of Dublin’s City Centre, the area has seen dramatic changes over this time - in the built environment and in the population which has at times included British army troops, 1916 prisoners and, most recently, regular citizens. The primary story tellers in the film are people who have lived and grown up in this area of the city. By telling the intimate stories of these forgotten buildings and streets, vividly illustrated through personal and community archives, the film reveals a social and political history of Dublin and offers a reflection on Ireland’s changing urban landscape. While the primary story tellers are not know to the general public the film also contains one of the final interviews with former Fine Gael leader Liam Cosgrave whose family have a strong association with the area and an interview with broadcaster Joe Duffy who remembers visiting his Grandmother in Keogh Square in the 1960s The film was made in association with the new Richmond Barracks Visitor Centre in Inchicore and will be screened in the IFI Cinema as part of their Irish Focus strand on Tuesday the 6th of February at 8.20pm
