(Remastered for RU-vid in HD1080 with slightly shorter playing time than original iTunes HD720 podcast edition to fit in with 10 minute limit. Original HD1080 source video used for remaster).
This special edition episode takes a detailed look at the spectacularly restored St. Pancras station.
The station is called St. Pancras International because it now serves as the gateway to Paris and Brussels via the Eurostar trains and the Channel Tunnel.
This episode closes in on the details of the 150 year old architecture with its modern embellishments, especially the restored roof with more than 14,000 glass panels. We also get to see the art that has been added to the station for its November 2007 re-opening.
Best of all we get to see the whole station in action as a hub for passengers - thousands of them - making their way around the station, to and from trains, and even shopping in the basement mall.
St Pancras train station was designed by William Barlow in 1863 with construction commencing in 1866. The famous Barlow train shed arch spans 240 feet and is over 100 feet high at its apex. On its completion in 1868 it became the largest enclosed space in the world. This restored arch is awesome to view - especially when standing next to the statue of St. John Betjeman.
The greatest threat to the station came in 1966 with plans to amalgamate King's Cross and St Pancras. However public opinion had been sharpened by the demolition of Euston in 1962. Sir John Betjeman took up the cause to protect the station and in 1967 the Government listed the station and hotel as Grade 1. Sir John died in 1984, but his statue is left gawping at the roof while holding onto his hat!

Yes, hopefully soon, Paris Gare du Nord will also be modernised and revamped. The station has so much potential, it could be as beautiful as St. Pancras with a bit of a clean.

Very crisp and clear video. I like the way the original Victorian period structure has been restored and modernised where required.

Good video. With Eurostar now departing from St Pancras it makes a pleasant change to be proud of something this side of the channel; so much better than the Gare du Nord.

My great grandfather was an Engineer (these days it would be Foreman of perhaps Clerk of Works) and worked on the erection of the roof. It was made in sections and sent by rail from Butterley in Derbyshire. At the time it wasas the largest cast iron span in the world and it still is!

Nice video. I was playing the pipes on the platform there last Friday as a farewell to a large group of European holiday and travel reps, as they boarded the Eurostar bound for Paris !

I used to do a bit of trainspotting there as a kid, as I keep saying that was when London was safe. which it is not now. I must be one of a few because I am horrified as to what they have done to it and that dreadful statue. It could have been the greatest hotel in London, but if they had refloated the Cutty Sark what posabilities. It was such a waste. Thanks yet again for a really good video

I agree, it gets extremely tiring seeing the same trivial arguments from sad-cases on any video that has anything to do with the UK.

@howardkevinm Totally agree with you about high speed rail. The UK desperately needs more high speed rail as it will be a long term boost for the economy and will be a viable alternative to cars when oil and petrol prices become very high. Unfortunately, any major infrastructure in the UK takes about 50 years to build thanks to our slow planning process!

I'd want the Brazil has it. At São Paulo, it has one; similar than this, but smaller. It's the Estação da Luz (136 years old, more or less). Actually, it's just a station of urban trains, but it was for regionals ones.

Victor Gattis :. At that time, the British were making a significant investment in South American railways. It is possible that the roof of your station was designed by the same person as St. Pancreas. Perhaps somebody reading this may know more?

You didn't show platforms 11 through 13. Those are for Southeastern's high speed services to Kent.
