On September 15, 2023, the communities of Kingstown to Argyle (Parish of Saint George), St. Vincent and the Grenadines, received recognition as Tsunami Ready by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO/IOC). Outputs included the creation of inundation and evacuation maps well as the provision of evacuation signage. The National Emergency Management Organization and Local Disaster Committees also undertook extensive public education, conducted drills, and formulated an emergency operations plan (EOP). The Tsunami Ready Programme incorporates risk knowledge assessment, preparedness actions and response planning with recognition being granted upon the satisfactory completion of a verification process confirming fulfilment of the guidelines. The project implementation was supported by the International Tsunami Information Centre Caribbean Office with funding from USAID and in coordination with UNESCO/IOC’s Caribbean Tsunami Information Centre (CTIC). This recognition supports the UN Ocean Decade goal, that 100% of communities at risk from tsunamis are prepared for and resilient to tsunamis by 2030.
