The last five minutes of this is exactly how I feel. "Making music is easy, corralling it into a whole is the real jujitsu of it." Exactly. Speaking for myself and many other amateurs that I know, music really is the easy part after a while (playing instruments for decades), but what separates me and many amateurs from the more prolific musicians is that vision and gathering and arranging those ideas into something that tells a complete idea or story. "Do you know when to stop?" ...... And one of the great pitfalls in corralling that music is knowing when to stop! Much of the music I wrote in my youth is horrible, not just because of the naivete, because I had no idea what to stop. Just keep throwing junk into the song until it collapsed under it's own weight. Great interview, and St. Vincent is a gem of an artist!

Her father's criminal active might only be 'white collar' but likely resulted in lives been ruined and so this is not a light topic of conversation. There are deeper ethical questions to be address...

i feel like she's allowed to channel her feelings about it thru music without having to explain or apologize for her father's actions? idk
