Just before Masseduction was released, The New Yorker had this : "There’d be times, in the following months, when I’d walk away from a conversation with Clark feeling like a character in a kung-fu movie who emerges from a sword skirmish apparently unscathed yet a moment later starts gushing blood or dropping limbs." He got into trouble with his question about the song Masseduction. Bowie and Prince had a baby! Eek!

I absolutely think St.Vincent, Annie Clark is a consummate guitar player, unique artist and as professional as Bowie and Prince, however, why do people have to compare her to these other artists, or to say she is the next this or that, she is the next Queen of herself. A truly inspiring woman artist.

@@L.Scott_MusicTotally with you on that. I don't think musicians like their genealogies declared to them by journalists though even though it may be well-meaning. I got the impression that it took her focus off his question. Got a quote from Jack White's Ice Station Zebra which I kind of agree with: Everyone creating is a member of the family Passing down genes and ideas in harmony The players and the cynics will be thinking it's hard But if you rewind the tape, we're all copying god

@@L.Scott_Music Just felt moved to add to that. I really enjoy the musical genealogy thing myself as long as it is done fairly. In the case of Annie Clark though, I think she was right about Self-titled. It really does sound like herself. Not that it is completely original but that it isn't part of some obvious genre. Comparisons are often a way of talking down an artist's achievement. St V video comments are full of it. MassEducation has brought on a flurry of claims that she more or less ripped off Tori Amos.

Now used as a synonym for self-absorption." Going with the latter idea, making a new album out of the old one as if nothing else mattered might be said to be self-absorbed or solipsistic. You might see her remark as pretentious. I prefer to see it as sweetly self-deprecating.

Since I was thinking of that EXACT solo in the second before she mentioned it, I feel qualified to say that she was just doing what I do almost all the time, which is confuse the name of the NY song ("River") with the PJ Harvey song ("Water"). Both are incredible. All is forgiven.
