ST1300 Clutch Slave Cylinder - 2022 Ep 4

After tackling the clutch master cylinder, it's time to take the clutch slave cylinder off and rebuild it. The Honda service manual says to take the engine out of the frame to do this but you really don't need too. Taking the engine out is a lot of labour and opens up the possibilities of a whole lot of other issues on a 15 year plus motorcycle.

As Mark Twain once said (more than once, I'm sure): “Few things are harder to put up with than the annoyance of a good example.” Went to take off on the 2004 ST1300 this morning for work and lo and behold: zero clutch action. No fluid in the reservoir. No drips under the bike. I feel as if this frustration may be in my not so distant future. So while I'm currently disposed to graciousness and appreciation I would like to express my thanks for charging headlong into the breech first and showing us how it's done. Cheers.

Sometimes you have no choice lol. It's really pretty straight forward except for getting to the 3rd bolt on the cylinder housing. But now I have a lovely 1/4" drive swivel head ratchet in the tool kit. I'll be all set in 5-6 years to do it all again. I think I might flush the system every second year. Thanks for the Twain quote. Had not seen that one before.

I found that old metal weed sprayers can be made into a vacuum tank , by taking the pump plunger & turning it upside down , there is a rubber one way valve on the pump just pull it off & plug it into the inside using a broom handle to seat it inside the pump . The tank is great for sucking out the old fluid from the reservoir & pulling the new fluid out the bleeder valve (with maybe one or two pumps).. It's great to get old brake fluid out as well. ..

Doing the work also let's me assess what might give me problems later on. As long as it is mechanical and I don't have to go deep into the engine, I'll tackle it.

"Remove the engine from the frame." In the words of Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry character. "A man has got to know his limitations." Important (seriously now) suggestion. Got to your local lawn and garden store and buy a gardner's kneeling pad. About 1.5 - 2 inches thick, still foam. Saves the knees of those of us who have more than achieved maturity.

Ahhh….I’ve been waiting for this one! Clutch slave cylinders and hydraulics are my “thang”! I did note that you omitted the “fun” part where you assemble the banjo bolt, two hoses and three copper crush washers - but of course, the sound track may not have been entirely PG…. In any event, well done and good for you for accomplishing this challenging but entirely manageable repair. Pete
@OldGuyonaBike
@OldGuyonaBike 2 года назад
Thanks Pete. I think I used one of your artivles as the guide for the fact I could do it. I think there was only 3 crush washers on the slve hoses. One at the bottom, one betwee and one at the head of the bolt. Can't remember now... maybe I've blocked that due to the traumatic stress. Hopefully I will have another 15 years before I have to do that again.

Looks like a fair amount of work , But you did a great job of it . I have my mini in the shop building your fold down table design . The new trailers have a 3/4 by 3 reinforcing board across the end . So my table ended up like 20 x 19 1/2 I think . I am adding a folding side table along the outside wall ,about 8 inches wide . And wheel well storage box on left side . Job is going a little slower then it should ,as I fold down the bed and take a little nape around 3 PM Ha ha . Thanks for sharing you adventure Jim.

Thanks for putting this together Jim. I would rather spend time on my back, then standing up while "removing the endinge" (inside ST1300 humor right there). This was very helpful. I did buy a rebuild kit for slave cylinder though as opposed to cleaning it out.
@OldGuyonaBike
@OldGuyonaBike Год назад
The slave cylinder unit is the better way of going but Honda Canada had a 2 month back order on it. The rebuild kit only took 10 days shipped in from the US. Now that I've done it once, I think I could do the slave replacement in about 45 min. Mind you, by the time it needs to be replaced again I won't remember how. But I do have a video to follow now lol.

New sub harness finally arrived. Vetted the color coded wires and respective functions against the existing harness being replaced. That harness really was heat-damaged, both externally and internally....so the out of specification Engine Coolant Temperature sensor replacement should solve any previously high engine temperatures which, in turn, should protect the new harness. Adding a bit of heat-protective sheathing (from the local high performance shop) should help too. Will take care when installing the new harness to mitigate heat sources and provide ventilation as much as possible. Another week and will be ready to reinstall the detailed throttle body! Yay!

Funny thing is, the Honda way, i.e. taking the engine out calls for 8-10 hours for a trained mechanic x $120/hr. plus Honda parts that aren't available. Wasn't that tough a job, just time consuming. I'm guessing over the years. I have bought half dozen bikes. That needed a Clutch, owner was scared of each one of those. Get it home flush and clean clutch system out. Then back with a new kit and fluid. Same with the brakes, so many ride and never swap out brake fluid. Always make good $$ of those bikes like that. Enjoy riding them for a month or so. Then sell for a profit to buy the next one. Also if you have one thats slipping. Make sure the return on the master Cylinder is not stopped up. That can also be an issue.
@OldGuyonaBike
@OldGuyonaBike 2 года назад
If I had a heated garage, I'd look at buying some winter time fixer'uppers. Too many are afraid of doing tehir own maintainence and then get freaked by what the shop qoutes them. I rebuilt the master cylinder in the last video so I think I might be good for another 15 years as long as I flush every two.

@OldGuyonaBike
@OldGuyonaBike 2 года назад
Good incentive to flush the system every couple of year lol...once I had the right ratchet the 3 bolts were not too bad, but yes a PITA. A lot more painful taking it to a shop and having Honda pull the engine out of the frame to do it. I figure it will be 10 years before I have to worry about it again and by then it probably won't be my probelm. Still, it's good to know that we can do that ourselves.

No local snap on tools or any other store so struggled with what I have. Really struggled with re-threading banjo bolt, even dreaming about it last night!! Loosened the 8mm bolt holding the bleed nipple tight. Bingo! threaded down really easy. Must have relieved some tension somewhere, as well as my own. Hope this helps someone else. Lines had no fluids in them. I could feel the change in tension at the bolt when I loosened the nut. Had the pan from new so I know they weren't altered from factory. Maybe I was 'lucky' with the factory fitting it like that. Sense of relief is still with me haha

Thanks for video, I have a 2007 - Non ABS with just over 160,000 miles on the original clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder. I have owned the bike since new and have changed the clutch fluid every year or every other year at the most. My clutch lever is solid and never went soft, no problems shifting ever, so were you leaking fluid or having trouble shifting? Just wondering how you knew it needed replaced?
@OldGuyonaBike
@OldGuyonaBike 2 года назад
I was not a good boy in replacing my fluids... way too long an interval. It seemed to have started when I had problems with the shift linkage freezing up... was neglecting the ball joints and I replaced it with a salvage linkage. The bike had been sitting most of 2 years due to pandemic and when i took her out, once warmed up she whould not shift above 2nd. Cold she would go through all the gears. 20 min. later, nope. I could not get a whole slave assembly in Canada in a timely fashion so I went the rebuild route. Have about 3500 km on that and she feels brand new. Can't wait to get going this spring... which here is about the middle of May. Going out to shovel right now lol.

I'm in the middle of replacing an engine on one of these I bought for $350 because the person ran it out of oil and seized the motor. I have been struggling with trying to figure out what that part is since I see it on my replacement engine and not knowing how to disconnect it. Motor is ready to drop as far as I can tell and now I know that is the clutch slave cylinder. Thanks . Wish there was a video showing the motor removal since it looks tight and not sure what I will be up against on the driveshaft splines removal/reinstallation

Good luck on swapping out the engine. I'm glad I didn't go by the Honda manual and take the engine out to refurbish the clutch slave cylinder. It will probably be tedious but the manual should have the step by step instructions.

Every time I work on my bike which doesn't even have a centre stand I dream of one of those motorcycle table stands. Work at height. When I first got this bike my first job was to install quiet baffles which required laying on the ground for a few hours. I hurt my neck on that one. The whole time I was thinking how can I do this at a comfortable height.
@OldGuyonaBike
@OldGuyonaBike 2 года назад
Because the clutch slave cylinder is at the very back of the engine and almost the centre of it, everything possible gets in the way. If I had used my lift, I would have had to snake my hands up through the lift to reach it. Even a table style lift would have meant contorting, bent over to get my hands up there. This seemed like the easiest way for me. The hardest part was getting up off the floor once in a while to take a break or get a tool I needed. I edited out all the grunts and groans lol.

Hey Jim, you did an amazing job on your St you've great patience. I've the bike same bike color and all with 67,00k on it I love my ST. Last summer I had a antifreeze leak and of course couldn't find the leak like you I like to work on my own bike. However, I couldn't find the leak so I removed the right side fairing and still couldn't locate the leak. Is there a trick reinstalling the fairing. Need your help if I can't complete the reinstall I'll take it to the dealer and have them locate the leak and reinstall the fairing really don't want to do that we know how they're. Thanks in advance!!!
@OldGuyonaBike
@OldGuyonaBike 2 года назад
The fairing can be a pain. I'm actually going to pull most of the plastic off in April when it is at least above freezing in the shed. I've had an antifreeze overflow after topping it off too much but haven't had a leak. That being said, my radiator is clogged with so much highway sludge that I am going to take it off so I can soak it and get all the fins cleaned out. I am contemplating ordering in a new set of hoses and clamps as I have a gut feeling I will damage some during the removal as they have been on so long. Maybe save some bucks and order a salvage set off ebay. The biggest trick with all the fairing parts seems to be lining up the tabs on some parts that fit into another piece. I've broken off a couple of the lower fairing bolts over the years and I have assorted push pins from various sources now. Are you a member of the ST Owners forum. st-owners.com I know that there are whole sections on the fairing parts within the ST1300 tech section. I've got to go looking for the tupperware worksheets again. Someone did a couple of good diagrams on them. Note: almost all the Honda techs these days have never seen an ST1300 so they are prone to taking extra time as they are trying to figure their way around them too. I'll do whatever I can by myself.
